18 year old shot in Toronto street car by police.

I saw the video on youtube. WTF were the police thinking? The kid saw alone in the street car with a knife or something similar and the police fired 9 rounds into him. People should go to jail over this one.

Could have used tear gas, pepper spray or stun gun.

We criticize other countries for their human rights record and turn a blind eye to this sort of illegal police activity. The cops will get off with a slap on the wrist don't do it again boys.
The illustrious mayor Mr Ford has not commented yet ?

Plenty of stupidity to go around with this.

1- You have 5? 6? 7? cops pointing guns at you, yelling for you to put the knife down, for a good 30 seconds no less, and you don't, well.......Stupid!
2- you've got a bunch of cops with guns drawn, a suspect not approaching you, if fact backing away into bus and you still decide to shoot, well........even more stupid!

Don't know if kid died, and i don't want to say he deserved it but damn your an idiot kid. If he did survive, he shouldn't be allowed to sue the cops or the city as punishment for his stupidity. Just walk out of hospital and go home.

The cop or cops who fired should do some serious time. I figure 5-6 years each would suffice and send a nice message.

    edit

Saw a clip saying kid died, cops who shot should do 8-10

One cop suspended on Full Pay. How come only one when 9 shots were fired. more than one cop was shooting.

From what I heard, the kid was threatening passengers in the bus and never drop his knife when asked. He should had known what was coming.

What! The kid " was " threatening people on the bus, when he was shot " 9 " times he was alone in the bus and backing away from the police. 1 canister of tear gas would have brought him out, pepper spray from both directions would have stopped him but no fire 9 shots at him. NOT RIGHT.

Well, in LCN they said ''Il menacait ŕ couteau les passagers du bus'' which mean he threaten the people inside the bus, I assume they evacuated before the filming started.

Canada has turned into a police state long ago. The police unions are too powerful and the politicans are too weak and corrupt to rein them in.

As long as the Canadian citizens, put up with this abuse of power, things will only get worse.

I read that it was one officer who fired all 9 shots so we can not blame the whole department but people will get angry when he gets off without jail time.

That's the downside of a strong union. The organization will put it's full support behind people thet should of been weeded out.
The good cops are dragged down into the mud because they will defend their own regardless of what good judgement and fairness would of otherwise dictated.

Their loyalty is towards the union ,and the public are held hostage, to their cartel of power and politics.

The cop who shot him 9 times, has been charged with murder.

I watched the video and it looks like an overreaction by the cop. Deadly force is only supposed to be used when someone else is threatened with deadly force. I did not see any imminent threat. Even if the perp disobeyed police commands to drop his knife, why couldn't the cops throw a tear gas canister into the street car? Tear gas would have caused him to drop the knife and leave the street car, and he would not be dead now. Toronto cops never heard of tear gas?

Not sure about the Toronto jursidiction but prosecutors sometimes overcharge hoping to extract a guilty plea on a lesser charge. This sounds to me like it could be a manslaughter situation or perhaps negligent homicide.

It reminds me that years ago I had to defend a road rage case involving a friend of mine. I was actually shocked by the charges laid against him because he is not a violent guy nor does he have a temper, but he misinterpreted a situation on the roadway and ended up causing an accident with another vehicle, on purpose. The prosecutors charged the shit out of it and the prosecutors in this particular court, which I will not mention, have a reputation as Neo Nazis who overcharge the shit out of everything. Anyways I went in there with guns blazing and copies of all the statutes he charged and basically in a nice professional way I told the prosecutor (in the privacy of his office) that he was full of shit, and why he was full of shit. I pointed out the lack of legally required elements present in the case, which must be proven under all the statutes that he charged. Anyways, with no rebuttal argument on his part, he offered me a plea deal on one of about 6 bullshit charges he had filed, where my client would pay a fine of $450 and plead to an infraction.

My initial reaction was to say "fuck you!" and ask for a trial date and tell him I would see him in court and hit him with some aggressive discovery requests, but I knew my client wanted to put the whole thing to bed. So I took the deal to him and he said to do it, and not to ask for a trial date.

The other thing is that in a high profile case that is in the media, there is often political pressure to overcharge cases. And what then happens, sometimes neither side budges and fears doing so, and an otherwise bullshit case is tried instead of settled because of artificial political pressure.
