Can someone explain this to me, because I can't make sense of it.

Simple, he was made an example of because every government maintains classified information and anarchy would prevail if a light sentence was given. No information would ever remain classified and people would simply act on petty grievances, knowing they would not get punished severely.

Secret shit is supposed to remain secret, and when it doesn't someone has to pay.

Sounds about right. I'm surprised he didn't get life.

I can understand that the American government want to make an example out of it....but it's to the judge to decide the amount of jail time.

The judge need to be neutral....he can't take any side....he need to hear both party and give the sentence regarding the crime

For me that judge did obey the government order to make an example out of it. For that he was not neutral and should be dismiss of his role of judge.

Also if I follow that logic....it's not important to give example to rapist, just to people who tell government secret. (5 years compare to 35 years)

Hello Iznogoud,

That he leaked military secrets is indisputable no matter how neutral the judge might be theoretically. With terrorism being an imminent threat with recent examples do you really think creating a threat to the lives of dozens or hundreds, or possibly an intelligence network is the same as a rape. Don't forget this could involve the lives of Canadian allies and many other nationals. He's lucky he has his life.

I agree with EB, it's a great lesson for others who take this lightly.

Cheers,

Merlot

I never said that he shouldn't be punished for what he done....I'm just saying that 35 years is way too much

for me rapist should be punished more than what he did

so if a rapist got 5 years jail time, he should have receive less than that

It is not appropriate to compare this crime to that of a rapist as the scope of the harm is much wider. There is a national and international impact and many victims rather than one. The sentence given was appropriate or even lean. You cannot commit this kind of treason and get a few years, then people would sell the secrets, do the time and live like Kings when they get out. Then we are one step away from complete anarchy.

He will have the presidential pardon at the end of the term of president 3 years from now.

That will never happen in a million years. He will not be pardoned. There will be controversial pardons at the end of Obama's term but not this one. The people who will get pardoned by Obama are people who will help the next Democrat get elected President. In other words rich and powerful criminals. This guy is a nobody. And you do not piss off the entire US military. Not happening!!!

Scooter Libby, who outed a CIA spy, has a better chance of getting pardoned than Bradley Manning. Wait. Wasn't he pardoned already by Bush?

Scooter Libby was not pardoned, his sentence was commuted by Bush.

Ah, good of Mr. Bush for not sending this crook to prison! He probably didn't want Libby to spill the beans on what actually happened & who (Karl Rove and Dick Cheney) was behind the whole thing, which was likely never sanctionned by Bush himself.

He was commuted due to having followed orders of others who were not punished. It is a totally irrelevant case. The Manning case involves a nobody gay soldier with no money and no influence to support Obama's hand picked successor in 2016. He ain't getting pardoned, period and end of story.

Obama's pardons will go to those who can grant favors with money or influence once out of prison. The list of potential pardonees ahead of Manning is about a million.

By the ways, only the prison portion of Libbey's sentence was commuted. The steep fines ($250,000) and 400 hours of community service were not commuted, nor was the 2 years supervised release. He also lost his license to practice law, permanently. That is a lot of fucking punishment for a guy who just followed his orders.

A civil suit brought by Plame against Libbey, Cheney and Rove was dismissed.

EB,

I don't doubt what Libby got was harsh, but it was deserved. I think this was the right decision by Bush, Libby didn't kill anyone, he outed a agent. If Bush and Cheney had a better relationship Libby might have received his pardon. The fact the Cheney misled Bush pretty much throughout his second term (not only on this issue but many others) is what pissed Bush off enough (when he found out) to deny the pardon that Cheney was lobbying so hard for Libby to get. I think Bush refused more to spite Cheney than to reward Libby.

Can anyone name one victim that was directly linked to what Bradley Manning did?

I just think its paradoxal that any gov't is able to make all these illegal things and that people who reveal their nasty shit get jail sentences or worse.
So get this, nobody is above the law except gov't, cause its an entity made up of people, so theyre above the law. But its all for our safety hey hey, you better believe it cause theres no other way to know cause they dont want you to know. And for the life of God, Gods, Saints and all other forgotten deities, I feels so much safer now that that monster Manning is in jail because wow, that guy was sure to come to Canada and butt rape all of our Canadian butts. Dont worry about drone attacks though, theyre still only used offensively halfway across the world, to kill terrorists and everyone that stand close to the guy, without any kind of trial, youll just see it on the news next day "Drone attack kills 16 in Burkatiskhan" its all good, until theyre shooting you, until they decide youre not their friends anymore. All good all good.
Now im thinking "why is lady Justice wearing a headband on her eyes?" Is it to be impartial? LAWL yeah okay oh then its the other reason, cause if its not that one, its gotta be the other, BLIND, FUCKING BLIND.
have fun guys

Manning was held accountable in a military court. Different rules. When he released the information, he had no way of knowing if it would cause harm to military members or not. He just got lucky that no one was killed. He took an oath when he enlisted, in my opinion, he should hang.

I think that from the beginning of this thread nobody has understood this. Military courts have a whole different perspective on what is justice. They cannot be evaluated by the standards of civilian courts as others have attempted to do in this thread.
