Salute, if you do a search, you will find a long discussion of steakhouses in the New Montreal Restaurant thread which I started.

I have been to Gibby's and Moishe's which are two of the better steakhouses. I liked the food at Moishe's slightly more, but the place is devoid of ambience.

The comment I always read about this place is that the food is great but very expensive. I for one don’t mind paying a lot as long as the food is good but the one thing I can’t stand and never accept is when restaurants are pretentious and act as if they are doing you a favour by serving you.

What is La Queue de Cheval like in this regard? Do they treat you with respect and as a valued customer or are they pompous snobs?
I definitly hear what your saying G1, but believe it or not the service is great. They don't make you feel like they are doing you a favor, but make you feel welcome. ! reason i love it sooo much is that they bring you the food before they start cooking it, just so you can decide if you like the steak or fish or whatever you order. Another Bonus is that there are HOT women just lurking around to see who's got the $$$$$$$$. Let's be honest most of us or HOBBYIST and never mind dishing a little cash, whether to pay for time (fs) or just a Hot money grabber ;)

Steak houses in Montreal

I agree with all of you La queue de cheval is indeed a very good steak house. However it is not the only one and frankly what militates against this place is that it's quite expensive .

I can recommend a more affordable steak house on Ste. Catherine Street: The Alouette Steak House : 1176 Ste. Catherine W.
(514) 866-6244.

A little more expensive than The Alouette, is Angus Beef Steakhouse. It's also very good.
1218 Drummond (514) 868-1666.

Steak Restaurants

The following,not mentionned,are very good -
excellent:

The Main Deli, on St.Laurent across the street
from Schwartz's,a couple of buildings south.
Good eastern European side dishes. The smoked
meat is almost as good as Schwartz's.Not
as crowded.

The Keg - St.Paul Street - Old Montreal.
Part of a chain, perhaps a bit pricy compared
to others.

Le Biftheque - 6705 Cote de Liesse.Overall
excellent from the various steaks to seafood
and side dishes.

Final comment about steak and smoked meat
restaurants.Regulars pay attention to who
the smoked meat cutter is and who is
working the grill. Not all are equally skilled
and it makes a difference in your dining
experience.

Steakhouse

I forgot to mention this one: El toro on Fleury Street.

This steakhouse is quite far from downtown Mtl but as I lived not far from this area I warmly recommend this place.

Does the Alouette Steak house still slap the tips onto your bill? I was there maybe 8 years ago and they added the tips to my bill. I wasn't too happy because I believe tips should be to the customer's discretion.

I must disagree with Beave about Moishe's ambience. Going there on a Friday night (the Sabbath) and seeing all the Jews from Cote St Luc is a very warm and inviting atmosphere, very high energy, and it takes over an hour past your reservation to get in. However, the steak there is nothing special.

Gibby's is fun, but is resting on their laurels, as the steak is not so hot, unless you like the peppercorn sauce. The menu is limited, you are basically forced to order the main selection.

Queue de Cheval is great, but it means you can't see three extra escortesans during your visit.

Conclusion: If you want a good steak in Montreal at a fair price, send it up overnight priority mail from Luger's or Smith and Wollensky's in Manhattan.

the word «ambiance» has a different semantic value in English and in French. Even though they are cognate terms «ambiance» in English refers more to the physical surroundings while its refers in French to the atmosphere created by a group of people. So Eager Beaver and Board Stiff are both right but they refer to a different thing (atmosphere vs physical surrounding).

Moishe is a very gloomy place but the steak is good.

I think the confusion is the two spellings, ambiance and ambience. The word "ambient" refers to the surroundings. The word ambiance (also spelled as ambience) in English means the distinctive and instrinsic atmosphere of the environment or setting, not the atmosphere created by the guests. I found Moishe's ambience, that is, the decor and environment, to be very bland, plain, vanilla. I would never take a date to this place- I would sooner go to Gibby's on a date. No amount of festive Jewish guests would change the analysis.

No offense to the locals but the best steak I ever had was in Kansas City, Missouri, at The Hereford House.

In North America, one of the best steak I've ever had was in Sante FE.

Outback Steakhouse
2574 Camino Entrada
Santa Fe, NM

In South America nothing beats a Churrascaria in Buenos Aires or in São Paulo.

Hah! That's funny. I think Beave and I understood each other on this one, but thanks for the lexical breakdown, protagoras. Both spellings mean the same thing in English, and I was in fact referring to both the people and the physical setting. But I do understand Beave's point and agree.

EB, no offense to american cowboys, but the worse steak I had, and by far, was in Houston, Texas and the best one in Nicaragua (churrasco style). There are decent steaks to be found in many places in and around Montreal, including Gibby's and The Keg (on a more affordable level).

Best steak...as per my choice.......

I have tried Angus beef on Drummondville and it was good....around $60 per serving.....
The Alouette Steak House : 1176 Ste. Catherine W is also good but less quality and and less money....probably around $40-45 per serving.....
If the que du chaval= rene lesveque is the one right across from the Molson centre with the stallion on the front over the door.....then it is one of the best steak houses I have tried anywhere......but it is not cheap.... probably around $80 per person....but it is awsome.

Just my 2 cents worth

get stuffed cheap, marvens on ball Greecy but good

I have eaten in some of the finest establishments around the world, and have even had the privilege to partake in epicurean feasts with captains of industry and heads of state. Conversely, I have also been as fortunate as to have found some suprisingly good tucker in some unassumingly strange locales as well. In montreal, we have Marvens. It's fantastico for what it is. It's not exactly michelin 5 star rated, but a simple little restaurant on Ball st. east of L'acadie.Generous, heaping portions of food served by sympatico people. I had the rib steak there last week, wow it hit the spot. Served with the tomato salad and thick fries almost as big as my thumb, drizzled with a dressing somewhat sweet and sour, mmmmmm. Oh yeah, my waitress was a sexy Russian redhead with a nice ass. There was`another sexy young thing with long wavy hair that made my pop rocks too.
