In a marketing sense: lets say 10 views/person adds up to 1800 people. Captain out!

Out of curiosity, what's a 'view'? Do they count each time we sign in and check the thread? I know for sure that they don't count every time I check the thread. As for signing in, does it ever happen? Or the website remebers out IPs automatically?

As for the girls joining in, don't worry CP, it's on its way. Every day I hear more and more girls discussing it in our changing room. So the girls are informed. Unfortunately I don't understand what they are saying because they converse in French..

Carla,

For your information, a "view" counts every time someone looks at a thread. If you look at a given thread two times in a row, its "views" are increased by two. Now, I know some will think I am wrong because you may look at a thread and go back to see the number of views and they didn't increase: The thing is that the counter is not refreshed instantly but once every X number of minutes, but it is still the number of views.

Basically, a "view" is whenever the web server is requested a specific thread by a web client.

As for signing in, the web server does not remember any IP address. The information is kept in a "cookie" on your own PC. If you have a laptop and you log on to MERB from different locations (ex: wireless in Internet Cafés, or at work, etc), you are still going to be automatically logged on regardless of the IP you're connected to, as long as your PC still has that "cookie". If you clear out your browser's cookies and log back on MERB, it will ask you to log back in.

Hope this helps.

I always thought a "view" was counted each time every individual checked the thread, but I could be wrong. Meaning, Captain, Techman, Cloud, Magda, you, me, etc.. count for a lot of the views on our own. :)

As for signing in, your computer stores what's called a "cookie". Basically, it's a file that remembers your user name on this site, and logs you in automatically. You've probably got one from pretty much every site you've been to. An example of what a cookie can do on this site is I noticed a few times you'll refer to a page & thread #. However, using the profile option, I've set up merb so that I see 40 "messages" per page, instead of 20 as you do. Now, whenever I open a thread, it remembers I want to see "more" per page.

More on cookies (the bad ones!)

It`s not a bad idea to go through your cookies individually and delete the ones you don`t recognize, or to set your internet settings so that additional cookies can`t be placed on your computer without authorization.

Whenever you have a "pop up" window on your computer, there`s usually a cookie involved (and one you probably should do without). I have my settings so that only cookies I want are placed on my computer, and I only allow "friendly" sites to do so. (so, merb, yes, "ripoffbanker.com", no)

I set my "cookie" recognition as follows:

Start at Control Panel menu--> Select Internet options--> a menu will appear, and select the "privacy" tab (third one)--> Select advanced settings:

1. check mark in box for "override automatic cookie handling"
2. First party cookies: prompt
3. Third-party cookies: block

A first-party cookie is when a website asks if they can put their own cookie on your computer. (for example, https://merb.cc puts a https://merb.cc cookie on your computer). A third-party cookie is when a cookie, other than the site your on, tries to put a cookie on your computer. (for example, the "ripoffbanker.com" cookie). Generally, reputable companies (of which merb is one) don`t have third-party cookies. Third-party cookies are often harmless, BUT can be harmful. I was in pop-up hell for a few weeks back in December because the wrong cookie got on my computer, and it allowed a program to be installed that was constantly generating pop-ups and I couldn`t where on my computer the program was installed to. That was when I increased my security settings. :)

General rule of thumb is if you ever get a cookie from a website that you`ve never been to, you don`t want it.

Sorry to be so lame, but how would one do this in Explorer?

Hi Magda,

The process actual takes place on your computer, and not your browser, so the steps are the same regardless of who your Service Provider is. (in my case, I use AOL and it's built in browser (which I think is actually Explorer as well)).

The one step I didn't include, is how to get to the control panel if case you've never accessed it before. Usually, at the bottom left of your screen, there's a button that's marked "START". When you hit it, you should get a list of options, one of which is control panel. (depending on how your system is setup, there may be two columns, as mine is. The Control panel button is on the right column)

From there, follow the steps as I wrote to Carla. Best of luck!

Magda if you have Internet Explorer you can do the same thing Heavy D just described without opening the Control Panel. Just open the Explorer and go to 'Tools'--->'Internet Options' and play around..

Heavy D, thanks for your comments! I just don't understand why you chose 'ripoffbanker.com'. When I grow up I want to become a banker who obviously has to rip people off in order to make profits! Nonetheless, I do not believe in Internet solicitation, particularly advertising myself or my product using pop ups and third-partied cookies! [Sounds like the third party of the week when there are only cans of pop and cookies left for the guests!]Haha.. Don't take any offence D, I'm just joking around. Hope to finally meet you tomorrow night before I leave otherwise I'll be thinking of you on my airplane wondering who you are!

Very possibly, but as you don't have to be a registered member to be counted as a viewer than you can expect a whole lot of people lQQking in. These threads are not simply in-bred.
