I can't find Eager Beaver's original thread, so I've started this one. I'm doing so only to provide a snapshot of the latest bad news for the World's Largest Republican.

"Schwarzenegger more unpopular than ever, poll finds" runs the headline on Yahoo News. The article itself is from Reuters.

"Only 34 percent of adult Californians approve of the job Schwarzenegger is doing as governor, compared with 51 percent who disapprove, according to a survey by the Public Policy Institute of California. . . . A year before, the institute found 57 percent of Californians approved of Schwarzenegger's job as governor and 29 percent disapproved."

Wow. There's something about actually being governed by Schwarzenegger that makes it hard to be enthusiastic about him. One factor may be that he sees being governor as a money-making opportunity. The article synopsizes a recent scandal:

"Reuters reported on July 13 that the publisher of 'Flex' and 'Muscle & Fitness' would pay Schwarzenegger more than $13 million over five years to serve as an executive editor. He ended the arrangement two days later.

"The former Mr. Olympia had announced the side job last year but not detailed compensation, which opponents say is a conflict of interest because he has since vetoed a bill that would have regulated diet supplements. Manufacturers of the supplements advertise in the fitness magazines."

Taking $13 million from a private interest while you're running the state . . . and then vetoing a bill that your benefactor doesn't like. Yeah, we're going to change the constitution for this guy. Michael Hiltzik, a LA Times reporter, blogs the following over at Washington Monthly:

"Let the national media enjoy speculating about whether he will or won’t run for re-election next year. It’s plain that he won’t. For one thing, all the issues that he’s put off for the last two years will land with a thud on the next governor. . . . My prediction: Watch for him to set up some national foundation or other political action entity, name himself chairman, and declare that his work in California is done."

Sounds plausible to me, but I never liked the guy. Either way, in a year we'll know.

He'll be back. Don't count him out yet. Many have made that mistake only to be astonished. In particular, ask the Predator and the other Terminator in Terminator 2.

The survey was by the Public Policy Institute of California, so I don't think so. . . . Your mention of Chirac provides an odd and unexpected angle on Californian politics.

From the little I know of France nowadays, only 2 things ever make Chirac popular with his countrymen: 1) being the only candidate against a racist fringe party, and 2) having George Bush behave like a jackass on the international stage.

When those conditions don't apply, he's considered pretty much of a boob and a grifter. He came into office in 1995 and the next election is in 2007. After 12 years of the guy, I bet France will have had enough.

I don't think so because of the law (must U.S. born) and I hope he doesn't become president as he's been a joke of a governor and I certainly don't want the law to be bent to allow him to run for president.

Hey Guys,

Let's keep things in perspective here. First of all, Arnold inherited a royal mess from his predecessor Gray Davis and it was going to take nothing less than a miracle to resolve that mess. Second, Arnold is up against a State legislature staffed with "girlie men", as he appropriately labelled them. Third, even though my buddies Tri and Donny B are not going to like to hear this, California is a State with an overwhelmingly high population of wussies, and you can't put a real man in charge of wussies. You need a wussy to lead wussies. That's why Jerry Brown was such an effective Governor in California. Now you put Arnold in charge in Minnesota or Wyoming or Montana, States which have a much lower % of wussies, and he would be considered the best governor ever. And that's just a fact, Jack.

My point is surveys and polls are subject a great deal of error. The polls said Kerry had it in the bag before Bush won the popular vote by 2mil. Polls are like a**holes, everyone has theirs. Depends on what the questions are, how they are asked, to whom they are asked and when they are asked. How big was the sample? Etc. I think these are valid questions unless those presenting these polls are nervous about the answers. :p

Your point may be that polls are unreliable, but then what does that have to do w/ Chirac? Is the idea that everyone knows Chirac is always popular, so a low rating indicates that polls are ipso facto bad? Gee, I wouldn't find that too convincing.

Also I'm not convinced that the polls said Kerry "had it in the bag." Every survey I saw indicated a tight race with no clear sign who would win.

Finally, yes, there are many ways polls can be slanted. But to assume that a poll is slanted just because you don't like its results is a short-sighted approach. If you don't like what this poll says about Arnold, your course is clear. I've given you the name of the group that did the poll, and you know the name of the politician at issue. Go to Google and find the group's explanation of how it performed this poll. Then you can decide whether it's kosher.

Hi EB,

I think Suge Knight,Dr Dre, and Snoop Dogg want to have a chat with you in South Central! If you want to make it out of there you better bring the actual Terminator cause Arnie will end up another 187 on the evening news. Don't go, MERB needs its most illustrious member.

LOL, Abe

All of you guys need to chill out and go rent "Total Recall." Was a better sci fi action flick ever made in the last 15 years?

Actually rent Demolition Man instead. It's not the greatest flick but there is a great line about Arnold in there. If you've seen it you'll know what I'm talking about. I agree that Total Recall is a great movie EB and I have to pick it up one day.

Don't take this to the bank, but I think The Island is indeed a remake of Logan's Run. I heard a while back that they were working on a remake, but I just assumed they'd use the same title. It sounds like pretty much the same basic story.

Arnold Film

Last night I rented on DVD a somewhat formulaic but very interesting and entertaining sci-fi/action film starring Arnold Schwarznegger and Robert Duvall, called "The 6th Day." This movie came out a few years ago and is one of the few Arnold actioners that I had not seen. The movie deals with the very interesting and controversial subject of cloning. It is set in the future, when the cloning of household pets has become legalized, but the cloning of humans remains illegal. Arnold plays a suburban family man named Adam who works as a commercial pilot and is a devoted husband and father with a young daughter. When the family dog dies, Arnold's daughter is heartbroken and his wife demands that he go to "Repet", a company that specializes in cloning pets. What happens next is that Arnold ends up getting illegally cloned, and the evil corporation kidnaps the real Arnold and sends the clone home to his family! Arnold manages to escape, and while on the run from the corporation's goons, he watches in horror as the Arnold clone eats his birthday cake, smokes his cigars and then kisses and fucks his wife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great stuff!!!!!!

The movie also introduces the concept of the "Virtual Escort." The movie co stars Michael Rapaport as Arnold's pilot buddy, a hobbyist who is obsessed with these computer generated escort holograms. When Arnold teases Rapaport about using these Virtual Escorts, Rapaport says, "hey, if it looks like a hot girl in your lap then it must be a hot girl in your lap!!!!!" The whole thing was very funny and made me wonder whether Celine's next trailblazing idea will be to market a hologram of one of her ladies.

The ending was a bit drawn out and formulaic, but the movie is overall above average for its genre, very entertaining, and a must see for Arnold fans.

I first saw this movie a few years ago when it first came out. This happened to be in Mtl, and one of Mtl's favorite providers was my guest on that particular evening. I liked it!! I was surprised that it bombed and was given the thumbs down by the critics. Maybe they found it too similar to another favorite movie of mine, Total Recall. Good to finally see that someone else enjoyed it as much as i did. This 'Re-Pet' idea is a good one....makes me wonder if i should save up my pets' body parts when they'll pass away a few years from now. They could possibly be useful at a later time.

Mmmm....Sharon Stone was so hot in that movie...

There was another more recent Arnold movie called Collateral Damage. That movie was soooo bad. One of the few movies that I actually fell asleep watching.

007,

I think basically every movie Arnold made after "True Lies" came out in 1994, with the exception of "The 6th Day" in 2001, was crap. However, Arnold had a tremendous run of excellent movies in the late 1980s and early 1990s. My favorite was "Total Recall" in 1990, but "Predator", "Terminator 2", "Twins", "The Running Man", and "True Lies" are all excellent films.

Pumping Iron

Although it was a documentary I really liked Arnold in "Pumping Iron." It showed what a goofball he is, how hard he worked at becoming so huge(with the help of some horse drugs), his smooth way with the ladies, and his personal approval of smoking pot which he does for all to see.

I'm not sure if he would be a good president or not but if he manages to get the constitution changed to allow it I have to admit it would be nice if he ran on a platform of "Elect me President, I like drugs and horny women!" He would probably win.

Is there a single one among us that thinks they can fix the governing nightmare that is California politics?

Better yet:

Is there a single one among us that thinks they could have accomplished any more then Ah-nuld, given the realities of politics in Cali and the giant mess their state is in?
