It appears that it could be the end of the line for the character Muhammad Hassan.

The WWE released the following statement about the character on Thursday:

"Due to the unfortunate terrorist attacks in London on Thursday, July 7, which coincided with our pre-produced WWE SmackDown! program, UPN has asked us to be sensitive to the usage of the Arab-American character, Muhammad Hassan.

We have agreed with UPN, and have not had the character on SmackDown! since that date. It is uncertain as to whether or not the WWE will continue with this character beyond this Sunday’s Pay-Per-View, The Great American Bash."

The July 7th episode saw Hassan and five masked men attack the Undertaker

I believe his last match will be this Sunday at the Great American Bash PPV vs. the Undertaker.

That totally sucks though..... this guy was really good on the mic.

Here's more on the Hassan situation:

The following is off the AP newswire:

Amid complaints, WWE agrees to remove Arab-American character

By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN
AP Business Writer

July 22, 2005, 3:08 PM EDT

STAMFORD, Conn. -- World Wrestling Entertainment has agreed to remove an Arab-American character from a popular television show after complaints about an episode featuring masked henchmen that aired the day of the London bombings.

The Stamford-based wrestling company said it would no longer feature Muhammad Hassan on its "SmackDown!" program. UPN, the station that airs he show, had asked WWE to be sensitive about the character, WWE said.

"It was an interesting character," said Gary Davis, a WWE spokesman. "This was an unfortunate sequence of events. Some people drew the conclusion these people were terrorists even though they were not terrorists."

During the episode, five Hassan henchmen in ski masks and camouflage ran into the ring to beat up his rival, the Undertaker, who had defeated Hassan's sidekick. The men then carried Hassan's sidekick over their heads, which to some evoked a martyr's funeral.

The show did not air in London, but it did appear in the U.S. with an advisory to parents because of the bombings, Davis said. The segment sparked 200 to 300 complaints, he said.

"There really wasn't any time for UPN to edit the program. So they opted to put up an advisory," Davis said.

While Hassan will not appear again on "SmackDown!," he will be featured Sunday on a pay-per view event. Beyond that, his future is uncertain.

"SmackDown!" draws more than 5 million viewers per week, Davis said.

"We asked them to remove it because we thought that was the right thing to do," said Joanna Massey, a UPN spokeswoman.

Hassan, a character introduced last November and played by Mark Copani, grows up in Detroit as a typical American.

But after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he believes he is treated differently by his fellow Americans, leading him to embrace his Arab roots and feel alienated from the U.S.

"The whole point of the story line and this character was to point out the injustices Arab-Americans have suffered since 9-11," Davis said.

But the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee objected to the character. One of its campaigns resulted in nearly 500 complaints sent to WWE, a spokeswoman said.

The character could raise doubts about the patriotism of Arab-Americans, said Siwar Bandar, communications coordinator for the committee.

"The character deals with a very sensitive issue," Bandar said. "However, he does so in a context that is violent, that is turning his back on America."

The committee welcomed the decision to take the character off "SmackDown!" and hopes WWE will make major changes to the character or not feature the wrestler at all, Bandar said.

WWE counts on villains to draw fan interest in its plots, said WWE analyst Dennis McAlpine, managing director of McAlpine Associates in Scarsdale, N.Y. With the Cold War long over, Russians are out and it's getting tougher to find a bad guy, he said.

"You can't find too many more bad guys any more," McAlpine said. "I think the character was probably getting a bit over the top any way."

The controversy left Hassan angry on a recent episode in which he was greeted with shouts of "USA" as he entered the ring. One fan held up a sign telling him to leave the country.

"Because of my heritage, because of my background, I'm labeled 'terrorist,' " Hassan told the fans to a chorus of boos. "I have been denied my God-given right to pursue the profession of my choice, to pursue the American dream

yeah he had the camel clutch, PLUS a "modified face buster", where he'd slam the other guy's face into the mat....

They never really came up with a name for that move.

Bad timing is a bitch... But Hassan is a decent wrestler with good mic skills. I'm sure they'll find something for him to do...

It'll probably be on RAW though.

I can see Taker winning Sunday, and Hassan disappearing for a couple weeks then showing up on RAW with some kind of repackaged character.

Wow, the thing that amazes me about this thread is that people are still actually watching this stuff. I hope no one thinks it's real! :D

I never said that there was no risk or skill involved in pro wrestling but major injuries are mostly caused by poorly trained wrestlers or in Owen Hart's case poor support staff. Goldberg will never come back to the WWE. He's a careless worker and he ended Bret Hart's carreer with a kick to the head. No one really wants to get in the ring with him as you never know what will happen. The reason I don't watch anymore is that wrestling has taken a backseat to the soap opera elements. When the main match at Summerslam is Shawn Michaels vs Hulk Hogan, you know that they are in trouble. The only thing that could save that match would be Bret Hart as special guest referee getting his revenge by screwing Michaels with a fast count or phantom submission, but that will never happen. Besides it's only a matter of time before Vince's son in law, HHH, gets the title back. Got to keep daddy's little girl happy! I still miss Carpentier, the Castillo brothers, Michel "Justice" Dubois, Snuka, Piper and the greatest tag team of all time, the Road Warriors. We will never see their like again.

By the way, try to get your hands on Wrestling With Shadows if you've never seen it. It's an amazing look at the inside of wrestling with the "Montreal Screw Job" taking center stage.

Wrestling fans nowadays will argue about who's writing the shows and how bad or good of a job they're doing. That should tell you something right there.

P.S...Am i the only cracka here who's going to Raw on August 15th at the Bell Centre ?

Too bad

It's too bad the Hassan character is not coming back, I believe they could have milked that for a long time. And he was good in the ring, which too me is the most important thing. Just like Carlito, he's good with the mike and is getting better in the ring. At the risk of being unpopular, I can't stand Goldberg. What the hell does he do in the ring. They built him up too much too fast. And often that spells trouble. Another example is Lesnar, who is talking again with the WWE about a possible return (he left to join the NFL but that didn't work out).

Glad to see other sports entertainment fans out there.

Fuck all that! I'm all for sports-entertainment... Provided the right guys are writing for it... Goldberg isn't marketable unless Stone Cold is on the other side of the ring... Lesner, IMO, is a waste of God damn space. He's a stiff wrestler and a shitty mic guy... Hassan not getting to showcase is a fucking travisty... And I hated that character... They need to let Paul & Tommy book the shows and let the boys from ECW show their true talent... Not this
gay-ass mexicool shit... But true lucha-leibre!

Am I wrong???

Lesnar will eventually be back.

They're gonna put him on Smackdown, and it will be BATISTA vs BROCK LESNAR.

And don't diss the Mexicools, they rock!

Juan Deer..... fucking hilarious

I'd like to go to Raw on the 15th, but there aren't many good seats left over at admission.com. Do any of you guys know where I can get tickets, other than scalpers?

Almost agreed

Hey King,

I agree with all your predictions except for Animal and Heidenreich. I'm sorry but he is totally useless. They should get rid of him. BTW what do you think the secret is with Ray-Ray and Eddie ? I think either Ray cheated on his wife or Eddie is the real father.

Hey GF,

haha, I agree they should get rid of him...but my prediction came true!!

Animal is so fat now... he used to be more built back in the good ol' days

What were your thoughts on the PPV?

Personally I thought it sucked. The only match I wanted to see was the Muhammad Hassan vs. Undertaker match.

Hassan's entrance was wicked!

RIP Muhammad Hassan

The Secret

I think the secret is that Eddie is the real father...... and he banged Rey Rey's wife because Rey Rey is an impotent bastard.... or because he doesn't have a cock :p :p :p :D
