    Gym Recommendations

I know we have a few body builders and such on this board so I was hoping if someone could recommend a gym or two (I live in Lachine and I don't mind traveling albeit by bus).

While I have lost about 15-20 pounds (I still have a whole lot left) over the summer so far just by changing my diet and riding my bicycle, I want to get some weight training done and some structured cardio classes or something. I'm thinking of taking either Akido or Kendo (I am fascinated by japanese culture so this is definetly going to happen) which would cover the cardio I think.

    Thanks,

    jpwic

PS The only caveat is that they have to accept something other then credit cards for payment

PPS Does anyone know of a reputable dietitian that will take people without referals?

    My suggestions are !!!!!

If you realy capable of travelling far to go to a great gyn, please get a membership at La Cite, located on park avenue. The athmospheare is very friendly, (easier to make friends ) and the instructures are over the top. Plus La Cite got many choices of working out. Besides it has the priviledge of having Rudy who organises partys and invites everyone. Rudy is the guy who teaches the Salsa class and intense bycicle trayning. He is great if you are not easily intimidated by people who are vivacious and outgoing, confident and very very nice.

I personally do not believe in travelling far to go to a gyn. I do believe that the best gyn in one which is closer to your home, at walking distance. This way you got no excuse, to give up.

Also do never keep the membership of a gyn whose staff does not say to you. Hi, how are you today ? Because you gonne fell discouraged, well at least i would.

Moreover make sure to talk with people at the gyn you go to. Because if you do not make friendly acquantancies you will soon be discourage. The secret to remain with am excercise routine is motivation.

OBs, do not stare at women in the gyn, it is very unconfortable to us females when you guys to that.

    Dear Merbites
Please fell free to point it out any on my english mispellings, thank you !

The closer to home the better as this
    elimimates travel based excuses.

Nautilus or similar equipment is recommended
if you are not familiar with free weights.

    Good selection of cardiovascular equipment
    - various types of bicycles,treadmill,step,etc.

    Aerobics or dance activities.

    Sauna,whirlpool,massage.

    Get a proper physical.

Try before signing and talk with the staff.
Find out if a personalized program with
monthly follow-ups will be prepared for you.
Also disclose any previous injuries as they
    may impact on your results.

    Avoid:
    - niche type gyms that are beyond the
intro level.(only for power lifters etc.)
    - hard sell of "miracle products"

    Julianna,

Some women wear sexy exercise clothing so that the guys do stare at them while they work out in the gym.

Since I didn't own a credit card until about a month ago I know that at least 90% of the gyms accept cash. La Cite is great but too crowded.

I am a reputable dietitian, will you accept me without referrals? [I'm not kidding I can give you hints on how to eat healthier next time I see you! ]

Ok that is good to know, I checked out Energie Cardio a few months ago and they said you need a credit card to join because they want to bill monthly or somthing like that..

I think I have it narrowed down to to choices Gym Zone in Lasalle or Body Fitness in Pointe Claire. Gym Zone is one bus ride and a bit of a walk from my place while Body Fitness is like 15 minutes by bus from my work. So either one works for me

    Energie Cardio

They usually give you two options, cash or debit. If you choose debit then they might ask for your credit card. Almost every institution I know except for Concordia University accepts cash. We are not in 2015 yet. In Europe you can't go anywhere with a pocketful of cash. Here we are still cavemen .

Rudy from La Cite is popular because he truly cares about people !

Dear DudeMtl Rudy from La Cite is a popular guy because he knows how to give the participants of La Cite a sense of belonging. He knows how to make anyone fells welcome and when he organise his great parties he receives everyone with open arms. I remeber my ex philosophy of leisure professor saying in the classroom. If you want to be part of a group, introduce the participants to everyone else, make people belong.

See if you want to be popular learn how to welcome people. Besides he is an excellent motivator and he is obviously happier than most people.Like you say he loves to dance and to teach and it shows.

Another lesson to be learn from Rudy is: Do you want to be genuinely happier? Find out what you love doing the most and do it, even if is just a few hours per week. That is a lesson to myself personally.

Carla, you are right la Cite is great but they have at some times of the day too many people. That is why i only go to any Gyn early in the morning.
Another reason for you guys to join la Cite is, they got lots of educated and good looking females. Besides it is a very feminist gyn, meaning the women are very well treated there, the female spa is full of luxuries to make women fell taken care of. If you are a female who enjoy been well taken care of La Cite is the answer, what is the question again ?

BTW I second La Cite. I used to stay at the Renaissance (Hotel du Parc) next door every time I would visit Montreal (until McGill bought the property 2 years ago and converted it to student housing). La Cite had a relationship with the hotel, and premier hotel guests would have access to the gym, spa, and pool. I always had a great time there!

Board Stiff>> Lay off Julianna. Why is it every time she expresses sentiments that differentiate her from a doormat she is called a shill? If any other poster posted the same things in this thread nobody would have said a thing.

She got off on the wrong foot. That is true. She apologised for the error in her ways and now is adding positive contributions to the board.

Let go the past and move forward. If a person keeps looking backward eventually they will walk in to something.

Hmm, I went over to their site and I actually found the prices to be cheaper then everywhere else I have looked at so far only $279 for a year which is about 200 bucks cheaper then the place in Pointe Claire I was looking at... I think I'll definetly splurge and pay up for lots of sessions with a trainer though, I've never been to a gym before and I have quite a bit of weight to lose so I can use all the help I possibly can get

My suggestion is don't rush to pay for the trainers. Most gyms have either trainers that are around and you can bug them indefinitely, they are being paid for it, or they have a free session with a trainer.
