Just a few observations about last night's 4 hour extravaganza:

First of all I recorded it on the DVR so I could watch it this morning in about an hour,

I was quite impressed by the first award to Jerod Leto for best supporting actor. His speech was very good and he even mentioned the troubles in the Ukraine and Venezuela (his band goes to both countries).

Ellen DeGeneris was fun, familiar and harmless as she mingled with the stars taking pictures and handing out vegetable pizzas.

Then Kim Novack presented and was unrecognizable with some unfortunate plastic surgery despite not being in movies for a long long time.

And John Travolta got the name of the singer he was introducing wrong.

The movie Gravity got most of the awards but 12 Years a Slave won the Best Picture Oscar.

What struck you about this year's award ceremony?

I was disappointed that the Wolf of Wall Street was shut out. I thought that this was the best movie of the year. the dialogue was as good or better than Goodfellos. It was right up there with True Romance, Pulp Fiction, and the Big Labowski. I can't believe it was snubbed.

But you have to consider this. One year Shakespeare In Love beat out Saving Private Ryan as best picture. I would rather have oral surgery without anesthetic than watch Shakespeare In Love...so these are the people that you are dealing with.

The Oscars should be taken with a grain of salt. I always watch them, but i prefer to watch the Golden Globe Awards. The Oscars are often a popularity contest, especially in the best movie category. In 1941, How Green Was My Valley won over Citizen Kane. In 1956, Around the World in 80 Days won over The Ten Commandements. In 1977, Annie Hall won over Star Wars. In 1979, Kramer vs. Kramer won over Apocalypse Now! In 1980, Ordinary People won over Raging Bull. The following year, Chariots of Fire won over Raiders of the Lost Ark.

In 1982, should Ghandi have won over E.T. The Extra Terrestrial ? In 1984, did Amadeus deserve to win over The Killing Fields? The following year, Out of Africa won over The Color Purple. In 1989, Driving Miss Daisy won over Born on the Fourth of July. In 1994, Pulp Fiction lost out to Forrest Gump. In 1998, Shakespeare in Love won over Elizabeth, Life is Beautiful & Saving Private Ryan. Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

In 2001, A Beautiful Mind won over LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. The following year, Chicago won over Gangs of New York, LOTR: The Two Towers & The Pianist.

In 2005, Brokeback Mountain & Munich should have won over Crash. In 2009, i would have went with Avatar over The Hurt Locker.

What i've concluded is that over the history of the Oscars, the academy has had it wrong for 1 out of 3 movies. Many of the voters haven't even seen the movies they voted for (and the others nominated) and the whole voting process reminds me of the IOC when they chose the winning city of a future Olympics: the producers/movie studio with the most money will often win.

I found this year's Oscars rather dull. I wound up flipping channels & watching Tout Le Monde en Parles at times. I only care about the best movie, best actor, best actress, best director, best supporting actor & actress. I don't give a damn about the other awards.

I missed Seth Macfarlane. I thought he was a great host last year and funny as hell. Personally, i find Ellen Degeneres' jokes rather childish & stupid at times. The show is so damn long that the last thing i needed to see was all that foolishness about a pizza.

Bring back Seth Macfarlane!

Ellen DeGeneris : 'If 12 years a slave does not win, then you are all RACISTS".

'Nough said. That was my cue to switch the channel.

I consider the best Oscar host of all-time to be Billy Crystal. As i mentionned earlier, i thought Seth Macfarlane was fantastic last year. Jimmy Fallon would be a great improvement over Ellen. The guy isn't only a talented comedian, but a brilliant performer in his own right.

I thought the pizza bit was original but they stretched it too long on the delivery skit and the collection of money skit.
The twitter of selfie of all those hollywood stars was great given the stars went along with it, memorable.
brad pitt photo-boming the second selfie Ellen did was funny.
And J-Law looked yummy

Agree again - Crystal was great. To my surprise, I also thought Hugh Jackman was good. In the old days, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson were apparently fine also.

The 3 that I thought were the worst were David Letterman ('Uma - Oprah, Oprah - Uma"....), Whoopi Goldberg and Ellen DeGeneres. (I'm not counting James Franco, who only co-emceed, but was probably the absolute worst ever.)

The James Franco-Anne Hathaway co-emceed Academy Awards was an unmitigated disaster. They were both miscast as emcees but Franco appeared to be high or drunk and not taking his duties seriously. It occurred to me later on after watching the show and also watching some of the movies Franco made with Seth Rogen that he may have had a bet going with Rogen as to whether he could perform emcee duties as his character in the movie Pineapple Express. I think Franco may have won the bet and perhaps also the role he had in the last Rogen movie This Is The End.

I totally agree on all counts. Hugh Jackman, whom i forgot had once emceed the Oscars, was also very good & surprised me at how multi-talented he was. Bob Hope must have been a blast, and i do remember Carson, who was also very good. Did Jimmy Kimmel ever emcee the Oscars? I think he could be very good, along with Jimmy Fallon, whom i've already mentionned earlier. Hey, what about Jim Carrey?? I think he'd be absolutely hillarious! :thumb:

The James Franco/Anne Hathaway emceeing combo was a massive failure. Hathaway was good, but Franco totally out of his element. I couldn't stand Whoopi Goldberg. I never really figured why she was picked over others.
