I suffer from the same thing. I've had accidents. You are not sleeping properly or regularly.

I fell asleep at the wheel one time driving to Montreal. It is about a 6 to 6.5 hour drive to Montreal for me, depending on traffic and number of stops. I left home very early in the morning (about 5 am) without having anything to eat or drink. This was my mistake. I was driving I-89 in Vermont and I nodded off for just a second and as I did my car drifted into the shoulder. I was just about to go off the highway and into a ravine when I came to. I immediately realized I dozed off. I then turned on the radio full blast, and got off the next exit where I went to a local convenience store and purchased coffee and a muffin and a Red Bull energy drink. I was fine the rest of the trip.

If this happens get coffee and Red Bull and food into your body, and turn the radio on high.

Pull over, get out of the car..and walk around for 5 minutes

I remember driving back to Amsterdam from Germany, and knew that I was going to crash

I asked my friend to drive the rental

As soon as he took the wheel..I was wide awake all the way to Amsterdam !!

Sipping Redbull also helps

Best Regards

This happened to me frequently on my previous job. It was so bad that I had two safe "spots" along the ride where I would sometimes park my car and take a nap. I would use the alarm function on my phone to wake me up in 10 minutes. I was fine after this.

Sometimes I would park somewhere and do 20 push-ups. It wakes you up. Other tips include buying energy drinks in convenience stores and drinking them while driving like someone already mentioned. Lastly, listening to radio can help. For me, it was talk radio. If they have an interesting subject, I will be less likely to fall asleep.

It's amazing that I never crashed. Thankfully, I switched job and now I only have to drive 5 minutes.

IMO, the best solution is simply to sleep more hours at night. But I know it's hard for some people when you have a busy schedule.

Did you think about wearing a breathing mask for your sleep apnea? This is a more long-term solution in my opinion. We need a certain minimum amount of sleep every day and if your sleep apnea is preventing you from getting that amount you should think about finding a solution to this problem. Good luck.

The sleep you need you can't get and the sleep you can get you don't want.

Sleep is a lot like prison sex that way.

For me, Chewing Gum is the best.

1. I'm starting to feel asleep.
2. Chew gum and I'm back fully awake
3. Loud music, open window or anything similar does not do anything good. Chewing gum is really efficient.
4. but eventually, even chewing Gum is not enough. Then I pull over and I manage to close the eyes for 30 minutes... Then I ok can drive awaken for the rest of the ride.
5. Red bull not bad either.

Be Carefull!

This has happened to me too. I'm not even feeling very tired, then I start driving on the highway and it hypnotizes me into sleepiness. More than once I have been jolted awake by the grooved pavement in the shoulder when I've wandered out of my lane.

I think I will try picking up some redbull and chewing gum before I hit the highway late night next time...just in case.

First of all, you listed all the things you did to try stay awake and if none of those worked and you fell asleep 4x then probably after the 2nd time you should have pulled over somewhere and just slept. Period. If slapping yourself in the face can't keep you awake then it's pretty obvious you should stop driving.

Back to the point of the thread, I fell asleep once at the wheel and woke up doing 100 and it was super scary; after that experience I'm super careful now and I know that I get drowsy at the wheel pretty much immediately so I typically pull over at the rest stop and take a 15 minute nap, particularly if I know I won't make it to the next rest stop. To keep myself awake while driving, I turn on the AC to max and make sure it all blows on my face and arms and I make sure I'm wearing a T-shirt so my arms are exposed to the cold air. I even do this in the dead of winter. I basically make it so it's too cold to fall asleep and it's uncomfortable but at some point you just need to take a nap and I do, even at gas stations.

Hope this helps.

I had several very close calls… Hope they will come with some device that can monitor when you are falling asleep soon before I kill myself… scary…

They already do. There's a bunch of different versions of it, some are called lane departure warning. BMW has it now starting with the new 3 series. I think Mercedes has one that looks at how often you blink, even the new Nissan Altima has one form of it. Some have an audible warning or vibrate the steering wheel if it detects you falling asleep.
