Are you afraid to travel by plane after all the crashes?

I was always frightened of air travel, this because I was involved in the near crash of a plane in Florida in 1990. It took me many years before I was able to fly again without being heavily sedated. The real problem with air travel is you are simply not in control of the situation. When you are behind the wheel of a car you control the situation for the most part. In a plane you have no control. You cede your life destiny to third parties.

If I were involved in a near plane crash, then I would have never been able to fly again. On my last trip, there was a freezing rain when our plane landed. I was very nervous about it and the plane did some skating. Though, when I am in the air I try to get all the crash scenarios out of my mind. It is true that we just trust our lives with the pilot when we board on a plane.

And to comment on the topic question....

I travel a lot on business all over the world.
Had a few close calls but that doesn't make me any more afraid travelling on a plane.
Never had any fear and a few plane crashes don't change that.
I figure one's time on this earth is up when it's up - if I happen to be in a plane when that time comes - so be it.

Of course I worry about it. But when I'm sitting on the plane, I try my best not to think of it.

I also try to book seats towards the end of the aircraft because statistically this is the safer place. I know, I know, this doesn't help too much if a crash does happen, but at least I've done my part.

I also have trust in others. Thank God that (again statistically) Canada's pilots and maintenance crews are among the best in the world.

So just fly when I have to fly, and then try to keep myself busy on the plane by eating, drinking, reading, sleeping...

That asshole yelled on a full aircraft...in flight...that he wanted to bomb Canada.

Where did you read that?
Any credible source?

I didn't see anything specific about what he said - the only info was that he may be mentally challenged.

In a way I find that the authorities overreacted - not the part of turning the plane around and landing as quickly as possible, but what was the point of the fighter jets - the aircraft wasn't being hijacked and if there had been a bomb on board that exploded in mid air they couldn't have done anything anyway.
And then the SWAT team - good grief.......

The guy is out on $1000 bail right now - that should tell you something about what the judge thought in this case.

I would not fly in europe at the moment for sure... never know when some assholes gonna fire a missile and take down the plane. But flying from canada to us, i would... Flying is more secured than driving in a car...

I got to agree tough, even not counting the bombed plane, thats a lot to crash lately... the one that disapeared in march and i think there is 2 others right that crashed due to weather problems?
