Hi all
Difficult choices
One of the best Boxer ,Heavyweight Champion of the World Muhammed Ali
Trilla in Manila ,Rumble in the Jungle ,
The rope a dope style and multi conquest of Champion titles certainly puts him on top of the A list athletes if not the best

My vote goes to Bo Jackson. He excelled in two sports. Bo knows baseball and Bo knows football. He was also into track and field back in college.

Oh sorry, wrong thread.

I've done a search and as funny as it appeared, I saw Micheal Jordan more often than any others being the best athelete in the world. Biased? I would say yes.

I'm not a sport fan like many of you out here, but to me the greatest athlete would be someone that can "excel" just not in one discipline, but in many. Disciplines where the strenght and endurance of the body would be challenged.

I think that anybody performing in decathlon would fit the "best athelete" description. People like Dan O"Brien or Roman Sebrle, that have been on the top for 5 or 6 years each deserve to be mentionned. Any athletes that would have been 2nd in that discipline for anytime longer than them would also get my vote.

Cheers.

Hello great athletes fan
What about Usain Bolt the fastest man in the world ! Two Olympic Gold medals in the 100 meters run Master discipline at the Summer Olympics.
The Lightning. BOLT is definitely on top of the A list for accomplisments and never seen results before ?

For sure not the greatest athlete , but a guy who was something else : Wayne Gretzky.
This athlete, has the most goals, assists and points in the history of the NHL.
Imagine, only counting his assists, he'd still be the leading pointers of the NHL.
This is what i call an athlete who dominated his sport.

Gents,

William Shatner...

Oh sorry, wrong thread.

HILARIOUS!!! Almost as funny as some outsider telling Canadians he knows better than them who their most famous person is.

What about Usain Bolt the fastest man in the world !

Too one-dimensional, too populist, too hyped. Many have been awesome in their sport, but because they focused on that sport. Speed is just one gift. Dominating one sport is being a specialist. The greatest athlete should have mufti-dimensional gifts and excel in as many ways as possible...power, speed, agility, etc, proven in various skills like a decathlete, pentathlete, triathlete. Jim Thorpe didn't have any training advantages, no training science, no super nutrition regimen. Yet he was a pro-baseball player, pro-football player, won the Olympic pentathlon, won the Olympic decathlon, and excelled at basketball, lacrosse, swimming, ice hockey, archery, boxing, tennis.

Does anyone know another person who could measure up to all that...without modern trainers?

Cheers,

Merlot

Hi all
And Merlot
High level athletes are unidimentional that is why they succeed in sports they do not excel in anything else .
There is no Warren Buffet ,neither Bill Gates or any financial wiz or other types !
They excel in sports they are athletes ,some athletes traine's 8 hours a day to be in the elite of there sport sometimes more it doesn't provide time for many other things !
Many athletes have performed at a high level what are highest accomplishment the A list contains many A list athletes
Roy Graisie MMA was excellent combatant in the early days of UFC
Defeating oponents sometimes more then twice is weight ,other athetes have impressive sports prowess and are valid candidates for A list greatest athletes list
Warmest Regards

I've met her once, very kind person.

Although, I have to say that being memorable is one thing. But being the greatest athlete, is something totally different.

I adhere to my previous post about what the greatest athelete would be. And according to Merlot's clarifications about Jiim Thorpe, he (Jim) would definitely fall into that definition.

...William Shatner following not too far behind.

Cheers!

Great hockey players need more than one skill (unlike sprinters). I am convinced that Mario Lemieux, had his career not been shortened by cancer and back problems, would have owned virtually every offensive record in hockey.

I also believe that his height, strength, agility, deceptiveness and speed would have made him a superior athlete in many other sports, in particular, football and baseball.

I saw Mario Lemieux play many times there is no doubt that he was very talented and had a incredible physical stature .
At Rendez-Vous 87 where he made a Great impression playing with Gretzky what a duo to much for the USSR to handle !

Hello all and McFly
I do agree with you and Merlot ,
That Jim Thorpe is the greatest athlete and most versatile one in fact he was selected in a poll as best athlete of the 20 th century !
However my question was "Who is your greatest athlete of all time ,any sports?????"
I never saw Jim Thorpe performing and it is very doubtful or rather unlikely that any member of this board saw him performed ?
It doesn't remove anything from his greatness just not the same question!:thumb:
And I saw Mohammed Ali ,Nadia Comaneci ,Usain Bolt ,Mario Lemieux ,performed against other elite athletes they where in class by themselves in there respective sports !
Warmest Regards

If you mean athlete as a guy who do athletics, it's probably Carl Lewis.

If you mean greatest athlete as a guy who is the most complete, you necessarly have to chose the best decathlete ever who is Ashton Eaton. The guy who hold the WC in this sport is for me the best athlete of all the time.

If you don't consider the fact that athlete now are 10times better than 100years before, then you have to chose Jim Thorpe.
