I would say Maurice Richard for hockey because I watched the movie about his life but I don't know too much about hockey.

Muhammed Ali by far the greatest.was suspended for years no practice and fight came back to reclaim his crown.

From the ones I have seen:
Boxing: Ali
Basketball: Jordan
Sprints: Bolt
Hockey: Gretzky; Lemieux
Soccer: Maradona; Messi

Overall, I would give it to Gretzky who was so head and shoulders (and even torso) above other players of his era.

In hockey, I would put Orr in front of Gretzky...

But we are talking about the best of its sports compared to his couterparts OR are we talking about the athlete overall?

Overall... It's hard to imagine a better athlete than Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens... Even Bo Jackson... Those three were not excellent in only one sport. They were great all-around in everything they have tried.

In a previous post in this thread that was deleted by the mods, I had stated that my contention has always been that basketball players are the greatest athletes.

Therefore, no surprise that Michael Jordan gets my vote!

I bow to you Titilleur!...Finally one who recognizes who the greatest hockey player of all time was.

Had Orr played in the Canada / Russia Summit Series in 1972, the series would not have been even close!

After the Bruins cleaned out the Rangers in the 1972 Stanley Cup, Orr underwent knee surgery to repair ligament damage. He did not recover in time to play in the 1972 Series!

To this day's probably his greatest regret as a hockey player!

Orr did however play in the 1976 Canada Cup series that Canada easily won. Orr was named the MVP...playing essentially on one and a half legs and essentially playing out his career while making all of Canada proud!

Yeah! you can bank on it that Orr was the greatest hockey player of all time!
