Look behind you.
The only Canadian movement I can imagine is " if " the Liberals gain power next year and start screwing the west ( carbon tax etc ) to feed the eastern provinces, I can see Alberta, BC & Sask say fuck it, there are grumblings about it already.

CNN is mentioning Catalonia in Spain, Quebec in Canada and Corsica (from France) as the states to watch most closely as being triggered by a vote for independent status.

Catalonia, The Basque Region, Venetia, Corsica, yes..there are a couple where they have realistic chances of voting for independence, especially if they see that it works out for Scotland and their standard of living improves...
Not Quebec..that is a pipe dream of a decreasing minority..We should be happy they dont kick us out

I communicated with a client of mine who is a Scottish expatriate living in the USA and she said she had thought the vote would almost certainly be no, but she was in Scotland this summer and sensed a change and she is now unsure of what the outcome will be. She personally wants it to be no but since she lives in the USA has no vote on the matter.

Pfff, thats not a thing to say. You do realize the only reason the decrease in the population for quebec independance is due largely to the rise of the english/immigrant population. Most french quebecois still think quebec should be a province but lots have lost hope sadly. The probleme is the Partie Quebecois having been mostly a joke since andré boisclair and pauline marois where leaders...

In any case...i just hope the conversative get kicked out, at LEAST please... i can't stand that Harper guy... even his face piss me off... imagine.

We agree on that.
Regarding Quebec:
Actually the anglophone population almost halved compared to the 70s.
Quebec is not doing great, lets be honest..... and it makes me sad and angry because I love this place .I've stopped watching Qc news lately because you dont see anything positive anymore.

5 people from my close circle of friends left Qc this year alone and others are planning to do the same.
The other provinces, especially out west are fking pissed already because they see what is happening with our dysfunctional and corrupt system...and I cant say I blame them. Thats why I say we should be thankful the rest of Canada still supports us even if we havent shown them much love over the years.

Did you mean country or province? If you meant country a high majority of Quebeckers I know will disagree with that comment, financially Quebec is in very bad shape and it has nothing to do with the federal governments.

Quebec is similar to Scotland in the respect that its biggest value export is the people leaving. They go away and earn good wages and pay taxes elsewhere. Sad but true.

I really liked Scotland's question... Do you want to be an independent country? No second guessing what it means.

Hello all,

From what I've read the original Union between England and Scotland was achieved because the elites of Scotland sent delegates to the negotiations who would serve their personal self-interests and failed to include all but one member who represented the people of Scotland who were overwhelmingly opposed to union. Not to mention a fair amount of English coercion with an army on the border.

Overall the current problem seems similar to that of Quebec in Canada. An ethnically different population with it's own culture and traditions rightly or wrongly feels underrepresented and exploited by the national government with little or no hope for change. We can go through all the crap and posturing about whether this is an accurate view of what is going on, but the important element is a significant strong ethnic group feels there is a large problem many believe might be resolved by independence. In Scotland's case it's economic position based on oil seems more sustainable than Quebec's. But the basic real problem is that after all that might have been done to make these people feel they are equals in one country they still identify themselves as a separate exploited minority and not as Great Britains. That's quite a failure by the Westminster government after 300 years of opportunity.

"they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM! ALBA GU BRÀTH!"

I've also met people from Wales who see themselves as Welsh and HATE being called English or British. Next???

The U.S. may have a big favorite but it's wise to stay out of this, especially in view of three centuries of government failure to resolve this issue that shows this issue is felt strongly. If Scotland becomes independent it would be wise for the U.S. to be seen from a friendlier point of view in Edinburgh.

I've been aware of Basques, Catalonians, Corsicans and many others around the world that have had aspirations of independence for a very long time. Now Venetians??? Some ethnic/political entities are more viable and some seem to be getting carried away with an apparent excess pride and ego that might be self-deceiving...and silly.

Cheers,

Well i meant country of course. I don't want to get back on an argument about why i would like Quebec to be its own country, but one thing for sure, the economy is not the reason.

This sums most of it. A Quebec Country would mean "pas de compte a rendre a personne" and we wouldn't have to waste money on british left overs anymore... Actually it may seem weird but if only Canada would TOTALLY remove everything link to the british, it would be a start for me in accepting it more. I have nothing against british, but the simple fact we still have "governors" and waste of money post like that irritate me to the highest degree... and paying for these queen/royal family visits....arggg.

Per NY Times:

EDINBURGH — Voters in Scotland rejected independence from Britain in a referendum that had threatened to break up the 307-year union between them, according to projections by the BBC and Sky News early Friday.
Before dawn after a night of counting that showed a steady trend in favor of maintaining the union, Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy head of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, effectively conceded defeat for the “yes” campaign that had pressed for secession.
“Like thousands of others across the country I’ve put my heart and soul into this campaign and there is a real sense of disappointment that we’ve fallen narrowly short of securing a yes vote,” Ms. Sturgeon told BBC television.
With 26 of 32 voting districts reporting, there were 1,397,077 votes, or 54.2 percent, against independence, and 1,176,952, or 45.7 percent, in favor.
At that point the tally seemed wider than opinion surveys had suggested but it gave pro-independence campaigners a strong platform to press for greater powers and autonomy
The outcome was a deep disappointment to the vocal, enthusiastic pro-independence movement led by the Scottish first minister, Alex Salmond, who had seen an opportunity to turn a centuries-old nationalist dream into reality, and forced the three main British
The decision spared Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain a shattering defeat that would have raised questions about his ability to continue in office and diminished his nation’s standing in the world.

Commentary: In the short run probably good for the World Order. European Jews are flooding out to Israel & U.S. (mainly NYC). WW3 is coming and status quo is better for that eventuality.

Why be sad for the Scots when the majority won? As for Mikes comment that Quebec got screwed read this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_referendum,_1995.... Near the bottom.
After reading the news this morning it looks like the PQ sent 4 MNA's to " observe " the vote ( at a time when the Quebec legislature is in full swing discussing important items ).
The MNA members ( Coultier & Ouellet ) were at the final yes rallies holding a " QUEBEC STANDS WITH YOU BANNER " Imagine the Quebec headlines if Americans, Greeks or Italians were at the 95 No rally holding up signs.
Our tax dollars did a lot of good on that trip.

Gents,

Not sure if you should see a doc and get that checked out or if you think Jessica Alba is so hot that mearly typing her name results in you having an orgazam and making not only an O face and noises but typing out of said noices.

Ahhhhhhh, you've uncovered the real meaning. William Wallace wasn't encouraging the men to fight for freedom...it was always a fight for free nookie, as it remains. ALBA GU BRÀTH to you my fellow nookie lover. Jessica Alba Forever YUM! :D

WW3 is not coming...

Dude, he (CS) takes a nutcase propagandist for an adviser . Expect more silliness.

Personally very disapointed in scottland peoples, they had a chance ...

I'm not surprised. After 300 years many Scots no doubt have English backgrounds, and it's also very hard to break from whatever security one knows to go into the uncertain and risk what one does have no matter what the grievances are. Like the rest of Canada concerning how the French feel, the English should be firmly warned by the very similar closeness of the vote to be much more answerable to address the concerns. BUT...the likely result will be the same finger pointing anger in both directions and a lot of futility with grudging changes. People are people everywhere.

Hey, maybe the Venetians will show the way.

Obama stayed out of it and no one can blame him, except of course those who blame him for everything. Come CS Rush, you know you will.

BTW: I kinda favored independence for the Scots because though I'm part English too I have little love for their government and their history of doing things. There's a lot more but no need for all of that, still I don't know much about the current relationship and functioning between the two "countries", it's benefits and it's abuses, except that the large minority vote yesterday indicates plenty of real issues that need resolving. So good luck to all Scots, and congratulations on giving those English a solid punch on the nose. Maybe there'll be a good kick in the ass too in the future if the snooty pompous arrogant Angles don't wake up.

Cheers,

Merlot

Why be sad for the Scots when the majority won?

Because thats a minimal majority, and we always know how that goes, and also because it was maybe the only chance these people could ever get from being finally totally independant. I mean, look at us in quebec... i was 10 in 95... i couldn't vote, yet i remember very well all that happen and been waiting for a chance to vote on this since im 18. Sadly the PQ played it so badly in the latest years i lost faith in it myself... Pauline Marois at the power was such a joke...
