I never liked Sebastian Vettel when he was with Red Bull, but now that he's with Ferrari & no longer a favorite to win a GP, he along with Raikonen are the two racers i root for the most. My vilain is Lewis Hamilton & it has nothing to do with the fact he's racing for the top team, since i also like Nikki Rosberg.

For the first time in years i'm thinking of possibly attending this year's Canadian GP. I had lost interest over the past 6-7 years and have since re-found my love for the sport.

If I was coming, I'd go with you

IMHO, it is a waste of time to get general admission tickets.. They used to be the best value as you could see the track from many points along the way

Now, the promoter has made it sure that you need to buy seats to get a good view.....

I will tell you that Valteri Bottas will be on the podium

On the weekend of the 2015 Spanish GP and the anniversary of the death of Gilles Villeneuve (May 8, 1982) during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, the NY Times looks back at one of his greatest wins:

Gilles Villeneuve’s Improbable Reign in Spain

nyt.com
May 8, 2015

Despite our era’s obsession with statistics, many of the greatest sporting performances and performers are remembered not for their numbers but for their displays of prowess or fighting spirit or the emotional charge they provide.
The Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve won only six races and never won the drivers’ title in his brief Formula One career, from 1977 to his death in an accident at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1982. Yet Villeneuve is remembered as one of the greatest drivers ever to have raced in the series. Even his son, Jacques, who had 11 victories and won the drivers’ title in 1997, is not often spoken of in the same venerable terms as his father is.

Probably the greatest tribute to the Quebecois came from Enzo Ferrari, owner of the Ferrari team, for which Villeneuve raced. Toward the end of his life, a few years after Villeneuve’s death, Ferrari spoke of his fondness for the “piccolo canadese,” or little Canadian, in terms he usually reserved only for his own family.

“My past is scarred with grief,” Ferrari said, speaking of his losses. “Father, mother, brother, son, wife. My life is full of sad memories. I look back and I see my loved ones and among my loved ones I see the face of this great man, Gilles Villeneuve.”

Of Villeneuve’s victories, it was the Spanish Grand Prix in 1981, at Jarama, that probably made the biggest impact on his legendary team owner and the public. It would end up being Villeneuve’s last triumph, as it came in June 1981 and he died the following May without having won another race. It was also the last Spanish Grand Prix run at Jarama...

...Villeneuve was loved for being one of the most passionate racing drivers ever rather than for his statistics. He never gave up, once returning to the pits minus a wheel or two after an accident.
But it is in numbers that Sergio Vezzali, a Ferrari mechanic at the time, sums up Villeneuve in a recent book about the driver’s life, “Gilles Villeneuve: His Untold Life from Berthierville to Zolder,” by Karoly Mehes, a Hungarian journalist.
“Today, if you have success it is 90 percent the car and 10 percent the driver,” Vezzali said. “In Gilles’s case, it was sometimes the opposite: 10 percent the car and 90 percent the driver. That is what makes him a legend.”

RDS is showing a very highly rated documentary tonight & tomorrow at 1pm on Gilles Villeneuve. I heard earlier on radio that the documentary will be in the same style as ESPN's fabulous 30 on 30 series. The program in question is called "25 ans d'emotions".

Recently i watched one about the late Greg Moore, who along with Gilles Villeneuve was one of my two favorite race car drivers ever. Since it was produced in french, i didn't expect it to be anything special. It turns out that it was great.

We spoke about this before Doc

Greg was the real deal on the way for sure to F1 !!

He was killed for no reason

He had already signed with Penske for the next year
He had a broken hand , and elected to do his last race with his Forsythe contract, because that's what a class guy he was.

He lost control of his car , and it was horrible
I won't even post the link, because of the violent end

Huge win for Nico today

Alonso retired with brake failure after almost hitting his mechanic during a pit stop

Honda must be freaking out

He lost control of his car , and it was horrible

And a year later, that part of the trace at Fontana where he slid across the grass & flipped over was paved in order to improve track safety. Sad.

I watched the Gilles/Jacques Villeneuve 90-minute documentary the other day in RDS. Great documentary!!

Gilles' death could also have been easily preventable. It kind of reminded me of Greg Moore's death.

The F1 season will be dominated by Mercedes once again...and Ferrari has essentially replaced Red Bull for 2nd place!

Today's race just confirms this!

On to Monaco and then Montreal!

It was good to see Nico win the race for once. By the way, i knew that he was fluent in German, English and French....but i didn't realize how fluent he was in Spanish, which he briefly spoke during the post-race interview. I wonder how many languages he speaks fluently?

Funny how F1 racing is. I used to hate Sebastian Vettel when he raced with Red Bull, now he's the one i pull for since he's joined Ferrari & is now the underdog behind Mercedez.

Has anyone actually gone to the Montreal race?

Is it hard to follow live (or do they have TV's everywhere)?

I've been there 5 times

If I recall, there are 3 diamond vision areas, but if you don't have a seat....

The circuit is 4.36 K
Rubens Barrichello did it in 73 seconds in the v10 Ferrari

Total blast riding the circuit on a bicycle
Should be a must do

I was there only once and it's very hard to follow live in person. The cars go by just too damn fast. You constantly have to look at the monitors for updates. I've never been back and would rather watch the race on tv.

The part i hated the most was the subway ride after the race. Be prepared to wait in line for a couple of hours and hope it's not 90 degrees outside like the last time i went. I'm surprised no one died in that lineup.

Word of advice: don't drink too much beer during the race. Getting to a toilet will be an adventure. Maybe bring a couple of diapers for the race.
