The best or worst coach, GM change ?

    Hello all

This year Ottawa Sens made a terrific run after Coach change
    http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/o...-paul-maclean/

They came back 14 points off of the playoff

    Cheers

GM Ben Cherington and Manager John Farrell, both extremely overrated, good chance that this team will end up in the cellar for the second year in a row despite some big acquisitions in the off season.

    Worse coaching change.....

Randy Carlyle replaced by Peter Horachek.

Carlyle's stock rose dramatically since then. Several teams are considering hiring him as their next coach. Many believe he'd be a great fit coaching his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. But i believe he may end up coaching the SJ Sharks.

As for Horachek, replacing Carlyle likely meant the end of his NHL coaching career.

    Worse coach/GM change......

Nothing comes close to the time the habs cleaned out and replaced Jacques Demers with Mario Tremblay & then GM Serge Savard with Rejean Houle.

These two moves which occured on the same day wound up taking the franchise back five years. It was one of the most disastrous management moves in memory.

Both of the new hirees had no experience in their new jobs. Tremblay was a hockey color man at the time, while Houle worked for Molson Breweries in a management capacity.

They were both fired less than two years later, once hall-of-fame goalie Patrick was chased out of Montreal and had already won a Cup with Colorado.

Agreed. Worse, Scotty Bowman left the Canadiens because he wanted the job.

    Agreed.

And most irrelevant GM change: Burke to Nonis - 2 peas in a pod, with "contributions" from each leading to the complete and total ruination of the Leafs.

Leafs hiring Cliff Fletcher as GM & Pat Burns as coach

These two soon turned the long-time abysmal Leafs into Stanley Cup contenders & it took a controversial Kelly Fraser call in overtime (game 6) vs. LA Kings to prevent a Leafs/Habs Stanley Cup final showdown, which would have been historic.

The Leafs continued to be contenders for a decade, even after Fletcher & Burns were fired & replaced by the likes of Ken Dryden & Pat Quinn. A big reason for this success as the acquistion of future hall-of-famer Mats Sundin, who became one of the league's elite over the next decade. They didn't give up much in the oft-injured Wendel Clark, who remains a fan favorite. But he was constantly out with back problems & wasn't the player he once was. It was a brilliant trade by the Leafs & a terrible one by the Quebec Nordiques.

But it was the hiring of Fletcher & Burns that turned the team's fortunes for the next decade.
