This week I was driving north along DeLormier Street. There is a Massage place that recently closed down.
Yesterday I was at another place getting a massage and I mentioned this to the lady giving me the massage. She tells me that business was down since C-36 and it is a little better now, but many places closed up because business never recovered. Have you noticed other places that closed up?

The place that closed on DeLormier was called Sakura. I was there in May and they told me that business was way down.

A girl at a massage salon told me that c-36 scared off a lot of part time students, there are less girls = less choice.

Maybe the MPs are suffering but the SP scene seems to be alive and kicking. From what I can see the agency rosters are full, there are tons of independents working. It seems to me like there are more providers in the business now than a year ago.

That would depend on the referral year ?
But compared to the early nineties when I first started in this adult entertainment business, it is only a very small fraction of what it use to be .

with the great exchange rate for the Americans . . . business was great for SP all this Summer!

I splurged in Montreal because of this. I had a great summer thanks to all the lovely ladies I was lucky enough to meet in Montreal. :thumb: But I hope the Canadian (and Montreal's) economies rebound. I'm hoping to return to Montreal later this year for another escapade:lol::D

Bad Chap,

I do not blame you. In London the prices are crazy, about 3-5 times Montreal prices. The quality not better than Montreal at that high price. In Manchester even the street slags that BJ in the car park are double the price of an hour with a quality lady in Montreal. Stuff the UK.

On the matter of Salon closing, I have noticed a few closed in the last year. Many masseuses going Indy.
There use to be 25 or more pages of ads on Cragslist a day, now there are 5-6 a day.

Erotic massage is a highly competitive market. You can't expect good profits without hard work and good knowledge. They are like restaurants, most closing within a couple of years. With the economic conditions in Montreal, it's normal that more get out of business then the ones opening. Even here in Québec City the number has gone down since 2008.

When you ask the SPVM far from a microphone their estimations of the number of MP's in Mtl, the first thing they'll you is that they can't
keep track. The business cycle is too short for too many operators.

C-36 did not help for sure, probably enough to curtail the otherwise expected gain from the small and slow economic recovery.

But compared to the early nineties when I first started in this adult entertainment business, it is only a very small fraction of what it use to be .

Comparing 1990 and 2008 would be more appropriate considering the severity of the economic crisis that hit hard on the working class men and the middle class. Then, the decline may not have looked so big even if you believe, like me, that there is a long term decline trend in the demand for sex services.

I'd be curious to hear some more from you about the beginning of the 90s.

More in-calls?
Certainly more street workers.
More relatively big agencies?
More small size agencies?
More or less massage parlors?
Prices and cut sizes for operators?

What are you comparing more precisely: the aggregated size of the markets (number of providers and customers) or the profitability?

All aspects of sex work is suffering I do not see the escort scene booming at all as some lead us to believe. The economy is the main issue. Those rich greedy corporations getting greedier with each day... Increasing prices like no tomorrow, making their employees work harder and harder for less money, outsourcing of work therefore loss of jobs. Also the new trend now is to part-time, on call, and temporary work. Employers are cutting production costs at the expensive of working people. When there is no stability in your finances guess what the fist thing to get cut are the non necessities and escort and massage are the first to be cut. As much as the conservatives think giving the business power to do whatever they want and giving them tax cuts and more freedom will not make them be generous and hire more employees or pay better they will simply stuff it in their pockets. As the corporations get greedier and no one is stopping them the economy actually goes down since the people have far less purchasing power therefore spend a lot less. This trend will continue till corporations stop being so greedy. This is why none of the sex industry is nothing like what it was in the 90's. All aspects have went down considerably.

Very true, GS.

The Montreal ladies are way more hospitable and respectful of their customers -- they reciprocate: treat them like the good human beings that they are and they too will treat you with respect and courtesy.

I'm actually an American. The company I worked for sent me to London for a short stint. London is great to visit but way too expensive! I'm glad to be back in the States but it's still tough for me to travel to Montreal as often as I want.

In the last year I have been to salons where I was the only client there or one of two clients. Ten years back I remember seeing places with 4 or 5 ladies busy at the same time.

It seems that I can get appointments at salons easier these days with the person I want at the time I want. My guess is that things are slower these days.

Not sure what is causing it or if its even related, but my ATF has been telling me since I saw her last summer that its been dead in Montreal, and neither her nor any of her friends are happy with the number of bookings they are getting.

The PIGS ( Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain ) countries have been in economic recession for years. Then came the BREXIT and now we are in the midst of a us presidential election that has slowed down economic activity. It is estimated that tourism was down 25% in the US this year. Even after the election thing do not look good. Everyone around the world is seeing less in their pocket. SP and MP activity is the first to be reduced when times are slow.

All that may be true. But I believe Montréal has had its best tourism year on record. Normally that would spell good times for SPs, no?

Look behind you.
I did the massage thing before escorts when I started, it was actually quite nice, you chat during the massage part and set the tone for the rest of the meeting. I still remember a MP called Kate from Kama years ago, she was one of the best, IMO.
