Paying for SP in US Funds

ATMs

How about using an ATM when you get to Canada to get Canadian cash?

I always cross the border with minimal US cash, getting whatever I need in Canada from CDN ATMs. This usually gets me the best exchange rate.

Travelex or some of the places on St. Catherine also seem to offer to good rates for currency exchange.

When you use US cash in Canada, there's no laws governing the exchange rate determined by the merchant, so the merchant could even take US dollars at face value, if they wanted to. Unlike say, Niagara Falls, all prices that I've seen with Montreal merchants are listed in CDN dollars, with no US dollar option at all.

I don't who your bank is, but with Bank of America, you can use Scotia Bank ATMs in Canada for free. There's a big Scotia bank right in the middle of St. Catherine.

I always exchange to Canadian funds but occasionally I arrive late and do not have time to exchange funds prior to her arrival. If this is to discourage paying in US dollars, I would have to call someone else when that happens.

At the rate the US $ is dropping it's not going to make any difference soon anyway. Thank you Mr. Bush!

Hi Special K

I understand what your saying. But as of today, if the US and Canadian dollar were equal, it would cost me 25% more to use the US dollar if I have not had an opportunity to exchange yet. Obviously, I would always try to exchange anyway, but I just don't understand why the rates for the girls are 200 US compared to 160 Canadian. Hopefully, it's just an error on the webmasters setup. Even at an equal exchange rate 160 US would still be a good deal.

Well, it's been my experience that Celine's (and other agencies) don't really care if you are a citizen of the U.S., Canada, or Mars.

Paying in U.S. funds presents the agency with the extra burden of having to exchange it into CDN funds for their purposes, as well as trying to determine the best exchange rate for them to get. So for them to charge a "convenience fee" for using U.S. funds is understandable. And I agree that the best thing to do, time and opportunity allowing, is to exchange into CDN funds first, allowing an arbitrary 3rd party such as a bank to determine the exchange rate.

After all, would you even think about paying an SP in the U.S. with non-U.S. funds?

And even if this is still unacceptable to you, then you can always try other agencies, which may offer a reasonable exchange rate, take US cash at face value, or charge less of a "convenience fee" for using U.S. funds.

I thought the dashing James Bond never had to pay for sex... ;) in any currency!

LOL. I'm a big fan of the Bond movies, hence my handle. I absolutely detest the latest choice of actor for the Bond role, however.

Yup - I agree - the latest choice for Bond is terrible.

Clive Owen would have been a much better choice...
