NEW YORK—Glenn Frey, who co-founded The Eagles, and, with Don Henley, became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” has died.

Frey, who was 67 and had been battling multiple ailments, died Monday. The band’s website said he died in New York.

Guitarist Frey and drummer Henley formed The Eagles in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, along with guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner. They would become a top act over the next decade, embodying a melodic California sound.

A greatest hits collection of The Eagles from the mid-1970s and Hotel California are among the bestselling albums in history.

Frey was born in Detroit and was raised in its suburbs. His solo hits include “The Heat Is On” and “Smuggler’s Blues.”

Frey was lead vocalist on the Eagles’ breakthrough hit, “Take It Easy,” a song mostly written by Jackson Browne that came out in 1972. His other showcases included “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Already Gone” and “New Kid in Town.”

The Eagles split up in 1980, but reunited in 1994, and were one of the world’s most popular concert acts.

The band, which, for years, was made up of Frey, Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, was supposed to have been honoured at the Kennedy Center last month.

I just woke up and saw the news in front of me. So shocking!! Even more shocking as when i heard of David Bowie's death, since i was a mega Eagles fan and saw them in concert 5-6 times over the years. The last time i saw them live was a year or two ago during their "History of the Eagles" tour, which was probably my favorite one of the bunch.

I had hoped to see them at least one more time. However, the Eagles will never be the same without the great Glenn Frey and i doubt they'll ever tour as a band again. Frey and Don Henley were like Lennon & McCartney to the Eagles.

Glenn Frey was a rock legend and classic rock recently has lost a couple of giants in the industry. I was fortunate to see both Glenn Frey and David Bowie live in concert. Others i've seen include Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith and AC/DC, among others. I was supposed to see Elvis the year he died unexpectedly. Enjoy them while you can, folks!! They won't be with us forever!

Yeah a definite bummer...he's from my neck of the woods in the states and was only 67...they say it happens in threes...Bowie and Frey so far. Not to be a downer, but what famous person is going to be announced next?

Ulcerative Colitis was the predominant downfall..horrible way to die

Glenn and Don were Lennon and McCartney to me

RIP Glenn

Damn...I remember Bob Seger before he really took off. He and his band played a few gigs while I was in the 11th and 12th grade at my high school...

Ulcerative Colitis was the predominant downfall..horrible way to die

Frey had suffered from ulcerative colitis and rhumatoid arthritis. He had also been battling pneumonia over the past couple of months and a month or two ago he had been put in an induced coma in order to increase the odds in his battle with the disease. He never woke up.

One of his pals told the media that the medication he had been taking for his chronic ailments led to more problems which eventually caused his death.

I'm so disappointed that i'll never get see the Eagles in concert again. Like you, for me Henley & Frey were like Lennon & McCartney. There is no such thing as the Eagles without Glenn Frey. Lately, i've watching their Melbourne, Australia concert over and over. It as from the Fairwell Tour I. I'm hoping they'll come up with a concert dvd of the History of the Eagles tour which was the last concert i saw.

I saw them twice

The Meadowlands in 1980 ( Here is a copy of the program which I have ) : http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/the-eagles/programs/program/GSM800615.html

Little River Band opened, Heart next, Eagles closed

I also saw them at the Meadowlands in 1994 ( Sheryl Crow opened )

I just missed seeing them at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, Nj in 1975 ( I was a year or two too young) : http://www.moyssi.com/capitolshows.htm

Anybody who was anybody played there..It was 1 mile walk from my house

Best Regards
