Reardon was always an asshole and this just shows what a complete idiot he is. I hope they throw the book at him. We're not talking about some poor guy who's had a hard life - we're talking about an overpaid egomaniacal son of a bitch who made millions. What a jerk!

Just because he made millions does not mean that he is immune from the problems of society, i would not be so quick as to pass judgment on him without knowing the motives or the problems he was having in his life, drugs, alcohol, financial, health, family etc.

Good point Joe

Reardon had been on anti-depressants since the death of his son last year.

Come on, guys! What's with all the heartless comments?

Sure, what he did was stupid.

But how many of you guys lost a son in the past year? How many of you are on anti-depressants?

Our society is so quick to judge. I don't think anyone can ever be the same after losing a child, no matter what the age. Robbing a jewelry store without a gun? Obviously the man was not thinking straight.

I'm no bleeding heart, but I do have a sense of fairness. Jeff Reardon is a very troubled individual and I hope he gets the help he needs.

Look at Tony Dungy: a class act. Then look at Reardon - the complete opposite. The problem is that society is too forgiving of scumbags which is whywe get things like the dead policewoman in Laval and the dead teenager on Yonge Street. Let's start showing a little sympathy for the innocent victims - like the victims of Reardon's stupid little escapade who didn't know he had no gun and were probably scared out of their minds. Then let's throw the human garbage where it belongs so innocent people don't have to live in fear. It's time Reardon faced the consequences - and let's not forget that his son was not a cancer victim (or a crime victim like the two Canadian women above) - he OD'd.

''There's been an outpouring of support from Jeff's teammates, friends, and neighbors," said Reardon's attorney, Mitch Beers. ''They've come out in droves. Jeff's upset for his fans and feels he let them down."

To me it seems that the "outpouring of support" has come a little late. As happens to many people, friends and family never seem to see the need for support until it's too late. It's not necessarily their fault though as many people are good at keeping things inside until they explode and show no signs of an impending crisis. It shows that no matter how many drugs you are on, they only mask the problem and sometimes make it worse. I hope that he is able to get the help he needs and comes out of this ok.

On a side note, I find it interesting that the Globe writer failed to mention Reardon's years with the Expos.

My holiday wish for Reardon: a few years in prison to get over his depression.l
A death of a child will mess someone up for life, plain and simple, regardless of how that child died. It's all about love, but perhaps you don't have a kid to know what it's about. Just my opinion as a father and as a father I know that Reardon would have exchanged places with his son in a bat of an eye. Drugs fuck people & families up like you couldn't believe. Reardon needs help, not disdain.

I agree that Tony Dungee is a class act. But what exactly makes Jeff Reardon the complete opposite? I don't understand that comment. Being a life long Expos fan, I sure don't remember him as being an asshole like some people seem to think he was. He was probably the best relief pitcher we've ever had here and went on to many successful seasons after he left. As for his son dying from a drug overdose, that doesn't make it any more or less tragic. The loss of a child is still the loss of a child. no matter what the circumstances. If anything, I would think losing a child that way would be much more painful. Like I said in my previous post, I hope he gets the help he so badly needs.

Hey Joe, I admire your restraint. It shows you can follow the rules of society. Too bad Reardon couldn't - or he wouldn't be in his latest mess. And too bad his son couldn't - or he wouldn't be dead.

Now, how about a little sympathy for the victims of crime instead of the perpetrators?

Peace.

Joelcairo- have you ever lost a son? or have you ever seen what drug addiction does to people and thier families?, i just hope that what happened to reardon happens to someone in your family and only then will you change your psychotic way of thinking, lets hope that the judge shows some compassion for the suffering that reardon has gone through.

I'm going to try to open your eyes, Joe T.

First, what Reardon did was WRONG, plain and simple. Last time I checked The Bible it didn't say "Thou shalt not steal...unless thine son has OD'd, in which case it's perfectlyacceptable". Last time I checked the lawbooks they didn't say "It's a crime to steal...unless you're a washed-up 50 year old who is depressed."

Laws exist for the protection of a society and its citizens and they are meant to be followed ALL the time, not just when you're in a good mood. Not that it matters to the discussion, Joe, but I HAVE lost loved ones (some to crime!). Since you offered me a wish, I could reciprocate and say I hope it happens to you, but of course I won't. But, Joe, if it DID happen, I wonder if your bleeding heart would still beat for the PERPETRATOR instead of the VICTIM? I wonder if Jane Creba's family will be quick to forgive the shooter who murdered the innocent 15 year old - after all, he's probably had a tough life. I wonder if Valerie Gignac's family and colleagues will be quick to forgive Francois Pepin, who shot her to death for no reason. After all, the poor man had problems. I wonder if they will forgive the bleeding heart judge who barred Pepin from owning a gun but thought a rifle was fine in hunting seaon.

So Poor Jeff Reardon lost a son, did he? Well, Joe, guess what? Everybody loses somebody sometime (gee, that's almost a song title), but that doesn't excuse criminal behavior - and make no mistake Reardon IS a criminal. Of course, since he's a rich white criminal, he'll probably get off with a suspended sentence, because he has money...oh, and don't you know: the poor man was depressed. Who cares that he victimized innocent hardworking people? Why have sympathy for them? He's a hero - he earned 12 million dollars for throwing a ball, so he should not have to follow the laws of civilized society.

Joe, people can deal with tragedy in many ways. Classy individuals like Tony Dungy or Wayne Gretzky - to name two very recent examples also from the sports world - can turn a profound tragedy into a positive. Some - like actor Charles Boyer - are not able to do so. When Boyer's wife of forty plus years died, he could not imagine life without her and committed suicide. I could have respected Reardon - and maybe even have felt some sympathy for him - if he took this route or any others which did not involve HARMING INNOCENT VICTIMS. Reardon's solution, however, was to commit a crime against innocent people who had ZERO responsibility for his problem. Perhaps, Joe, THEY might have lasting emotional damage (dare I say "depression") thanks to Reardon's thoughtless and inhuman act. While Reardon...and ONLY Reardon himself is the architect of his own current problems, he has potentially brought harm to INNOCENT people.

And THAT, Joe, is why your hero is nothing but trash. But, then again, maybe I'm just heartless and psychotic for stating the obvious. (Although, Joe, you may want to check your dictionary: Pepin's behavior - or Reardon's - might be classified as psychotic, but last time I checked, the mere act of having a different opinion from yours didn't merit the description.)

Peace out.
