Every time I visit MERB and then run ADAWARE - it always finds SPYWARE on my computer.

Is this happening to other members/visitors?

What is the spyware that it finds? Chances are that it's just a cookie that most sites use to keep track of various things such as your user id and password if you use the remember me option. Other than that I have never found any merb related spyware on any system I use to connect.

not sure

however - everytime I vist MERB and then run ADAWARE - it finds multiple critical objects that it removes (I've never actually noted the names of each file/program that it finds)

I've tried this on multiple computers - run adaware - nothing shows up.

Visit MERB then run adaware - atleast 3-5 critical objects are detected...and it happens even when I don't log in, just browse.

Cookies

I'm 99% sure that it's just finding cookies. Next time you run it check what the "critical objects" are. I configure ad-aware to ignore cookies so that I don't get bothered by this. For safe computing I would also recommend using spybot search and destroy and spyware blaster. Both are free and available from download.com. Spybot has an advanced mode that with a little tweaking is quite useful in protecting your system from various trojans and worms. Read the online guide or manual for how best to configure the prog. Blaster is not a scanner. You install it on a clean system and it will prevent things like malicious active-x and tracking cookies from installing on your system, once configured you just have to check for updates once a month or so.

For an anti-virus, I have dumped Norton and McAfee and use one called Kaspersky. It takes much less disk space and uses less resources than either of the major AV's. Only costs 50$ also. My system has been sypware and virus free for a year and a half due to these programs.

Ad-aware, spybot search&destroy and Spyware Blaster are 100% safe and efficient programs to use for removing spyware and ad-ware. There are many soundalike named programs floating around that do indeed install more spyware than they remove, if they remove any at all. The three programs I mentioned are available at www.download.com and are completely free versions, not disabled demos, ad supported or time limited (30 day) demos. One major thing to beware of are those programs that pop up on your screen telling you are infected with spyware. No reputable software vendor uses such tactics.

Spiderman05, with avg you get what you pay for. For someone that is relatively PC literate, and follows the usual common sense when it comes to e-mail attachments and downloading, avg is fine. But for the average user who knows little about computers a stronger AV is recommended. Check this site out for anti-virus program ratings. http://www.av-comparatives.org/

When you are looking for a specific security soft., avoid usnig search engines to get the address of the web site where you can download it. It is recommended to always get the address from a trustworthy web site.

Excellent advice that everyone should follow. Sites such as shareware.com, download.com, and cnet.com are good places to find reliable shareware and freeware programs as well as demo versions of many retail programs. When you type the address directly, check for typos. There are a lot of problem sites out there that are just one letter off the spelling of the real site. When you hit one of these, they often download a bunch of spyware and trojan downloaders before you have time to navigate away.

www.sarc.com is run by Symantec (Norton's parent company) and is the best place for virus information. This is also the place to get removal tools for those pain in the butt trojans, worms, and many viruses.

Log to Merb every day....never got any surviving spyware from this board....AdAware (you have to keep it up to date!) never detected anything...... and firewall blocks intruders ...and others...and nothing mentioned above.
