Have you guys ever experienced this, at one point suddenly you lost all motivation about your work/study? Just don't want to do anything productive at all.

I am working at a position where I do sample tests, write reports and provide solutions for improvment, it requires me doing my own research off work. At work I am with my supervisors/colleagues so I don't mess around, but whenever I am by myself, things are quite different. Last week I almost failed to meet the deadline cuz I only started my report in the midnight, of course the quality was pretty low and my supervisor was not happy at all, but he was nice enough to give me an extension and specifically pointed out what material/literatures I must read in order to finish the report. Now its due next Monday but I haven't started the reading yet....

I have been having this problem since long time ago but at this point I just cannot concentrate at all, I pretty much just check Merb, watch news when ppl are not around. At home I am all by myself then I play video games, stream Netflix, watch porn and think about the SPs I have met or some hot chicks I saw during the day. Too much time wasted and I don't feel having fun.

Tried to go the university library a few times to force myself to read.... then three hours past I only finished the opening paragraph...

It is kind of related to my personality. I am still very young, I just have very negative prospect about the future (which results the bad attitude), not much a social or outdoor person, no family around. I do respect those hard working people at work, and admire people who seem to enjoy their lives.

I understand its all about ethics/ self-discipline, but failed to conquer my laziness. Any advice?

Hi Friz888
Since i am retired and have worked 35 years at the same place, what you describe can happen over the years.
When it comes too severe, like light anhedonia, swinging moods, negative thoughts, fatigue, as bodily and mentally, lack of concentration, it look like depressive moods to me at least at a slight degree.
I am no psychologist, but without talking my private life, I know what it is.
The secret, acknowledge that your not in the best of mood, accept it, and try to talk to friends, empathic friends I mean, and cry if need be, and yes its not shame to cry, otherwise men would not have tear ducts.
Do not listen to people who will say something like "get over with" or "kick you in the butt" these are counter productive advices, i know.
If it get worse get advice from some professional, but since i do not know you and i am not doctor, i will not go further in my humble opinion, but i think you you got my point.

Ho my friend I went trought that. Mithridate is right on the spot if you ask me. Myself, after enduring too many "get over with it", "kick you in the butt" advice that one day I went to see my boss and told him that I quit and left within minutes. Went back to university and then became an entrepreneur. I now know my condition, what I can do and cannot. I pay some of my staff more than myself and do not care about that because they do the stuff I cannot and make me happy :)

Cheers and good luck. We live only once, make something happen!

Hi again
Worst thing to do is self diagnose yourself, and its a bit early to talk about taking pills, especially specific one like Ritalin, please avoid pills at all cost if possible, only a doctor will be able to pinpoint what you have if you have something, what I wrote was based on something I have lived, and i have seen a specialist, and he helped me.
But the at the end, the only person who can help you, is you, since you and you alone will have to do the work.

Perhaps you're overworked and need a vacation? Some travel may rejuvenate your energy.

If not and it's more serious than that, maybe you've just gotten tired of your field. Could always go back to school and study in something you really have interest in.

Life's too short: don't waste it doing something you don't like. Make changes if you have to (whether it be the job itself, your professional field, etc).

Thx for the advice again Mithridate.
And charmer I think you are probably right about the reason. I am allowed to take a break for a week next month, I am planning simply booking a hotel at downtown and having outcalls for the week (yep this is vacation for loners like me)..
Usually I would be pretty excited about it and finish my work before the break, but this time I just cant... hope I have a time machine so I can skip the waiting.
I spent almost 6 years to get an engineering degree, but part of me always knew I am not very passionate about it, especially my current working filed is related to materials, which was the course I hated the most.
various reasons to choose engineering, main reason is to find a job and stay in Canada ( I am a FOB).
I guess for born Canadians they can afford pursuit careers they enjoy, but for me, maybe too much price to give up.
But again, it is my choice, can't keep whining about it, really have just to get over it.

It's up to you, but a change of scenery might do you some good. Even if it's someplace not too far (ie. Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, New York, etc).

You'd be paying for a hotel anyways, so why not in a different city? Plus, you could always hobby while you're there, if need be.

Sounds like you hate your job or are fed up of it. I was there once also. Advice is to change jobs. Sounds like your job is lonely and involves a lot of work by yourself. You wrote you are young so change careers. When I changed jobs damn it made such a difference I was so happy and motivated. I looked forward to do there instead of dreading it.

I have you ever considered to stop watching porn, stop looking and thinking of SP and to something else. Low testosterone level will do that to you and jerking off and thinking all the time about sex is definitly not helping. I would start with this and after a month, if nothing as change, think about changing job. But seriously, man aren't suppose to think about sex all the time. There's a reason why coaches don't want their athlete to have sex prior to a big event...

Find yourself a girlfriend, take the plunge, it is not as difficult as you might think.
There is no better remedy for boredom or low self esteem.
Enroll in classes that are frequented by women, find a hobby, sport, activity where they hang out.
Basically anything that will keep you from being constantly alone.

Thanks everyone again for the good advice.
Yes I do spend too much time by myself, and it is painful. It was even worse few years ago.
I have some hobbies, playing musical instrument, or reading books, such activities don't require me interacting with other people.
Now it is getting better gradually, I can chit chat with my workmates and make some jokes, still get lost when hanging out with a large group, probably due to my poor English.
I know someone would say then hangout with people who speak the same language as you, but trust me, I am not the only FOB who doesn't like hanging out with their own people, can only blame myself.

As for girlfriend, I will try. Thanks again.

Poor English? Can not see that in your writing compared to some francophones on this site, very good in fact.

I had and have similar issues. A big help for me was getting back into serious weight training and long-distance running. It helped a lot with my concentration levels. As for porn and sex, I found regular sex helped with concentration, but porn and whacking off diminished concentration. Switching to a vegetarian diet also helped me - vegetarianism isn't for everyone, but do keep away from sugar (especially sugary drinks), diet sodas, processed/cured meats and simple carbohydrates. If you're mostly working at a computer, look into getting an adjustable height desk so that you can work standing. If you work in an office building, when you feel your concentration levels dropping, briskly walk up a dozen flights of stairs. Drink plenty of water as well.

This is pretty good advice, I have to say. Thanks for sharing, might have to implement some/all of this for myself.

Friz speak your mind to people you meet (especially girls) just like you wrote you mind here. Do not worry about the language, it's just a way of communication. Your confidence in yourself and humour will get you throught any barrier of language :)
