Another young promising actor died tragically

Anton Yelchin, Star Trek actor, dies in car accident at age 27

Anton Yelchin, a charismatic rising star best known for playing Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek films, has died at the age of 27. He was killed in a fatal traffic accident early on Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed.

According to reports, Yelchin’s friends alerted police when he failed to turn up to a rehearsal scheduled to start on Saturday evening. They then discovered the actor in his driveway at around 1am. No other vehicles are thought to have been involved and the cause of death is being reported as accidental.

Jenny Houser, a spokesperson for the LAPD, told the The Hollywood Reporter: “It appears he momentarily exited his car and it rolled backward, causing trauma that led to his death.”

Yelchin was an actor whose stock-in-trade was sweetness and even naiveté: his career began young, in small films and TV series, before he broke out in 2006 with crime thriller Alpha Dog and the following year as Robert Downey Jr’s troubled pupil in Charlie Bartlett. In 2011, he starred opposite Felicity Jones in Like Crazy – the transatlantic romance which won both audience and jury awards at the Sundance film festival, as well as playing Mel Gibson’s son in Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, released the same year.

But it was as mathematical brainbox Pavel Chekov in the new set of Star Trek films that Yelchin first came to mainstream attention. In JJ Abrams’ critically and commercially successful 2009 Star Trek, and the 2013 followup, the actor won acclaim for an innocence and humour that characterised many of his roles. A third film, Star Trek: Beyond, is due out in July.

Despite his age, Yelchin had managed to carve out a career which balanced blockbusters with credible independent movies. Speaking to the Guardian in 2009 to promote blockbuster Terminator Salvation, Yelchin said: “What I watch and what I work on are different.”

His own taste veered more towards the films of directors such as Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier and Pedro Almodovar, as well as Martin Scorsese and Jim Jarmusch, in whose 2013 vampire romance Only Lovers Left Alive Yelchin went on to take a role.

Earlier this year, he won much acclaim for his role in ensemble horror Green Room.

An only child, Yelchin was born in Russia in 1989. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. Yelchin’s family has requested privacy at this time.

Tributes to the actor began appearing on Twitter shortly after reports broke. Anna Kendrick called his death a “huge loss” while Matt Lucas called it “dreadful news” and Kevin Smith described it as “so damn sad”.

Like Crazy director Drake Doremus has also shared his memories of working with Yelchin.

“Anton was one of a kind,” he told Variety. “Such an old soul who was one of the most sincere but also funniest people I have ever met. Anton changed my life in so many ways and I’ll never forget him.”

Amongst Yelchin’s upcoming projects was Baseballissimo, a sports comedy set in Italy during the second world war. Its writer and Yelchin’s co-star, Jay Baruchel, wrote of his shock and sadness over the sudden loss of someone he “call[ed] my friend for the better part of the last decade”.

How do you get run over and killed by your own car unless you are drunk? I am guessing he left it in neutral and it rolled. Sad- didn't have to happen.

I did see this happen a few years ago in a civil case. A guy ran over his own girlfriend, unintentionally, causing serious injuries but not death. They were drunk and had argued. He left her place and was backing up his car, when she ran out of the apartment to continue the argument. He simply nailed her as he was backing up and did not see her. Under the law of the state where this happened, due to her injuries, there was an automatic investigation for domestic abuse, but he was cleared, was just a plain old accident somewhat fueled by alcohol and emotions.

This reminds me as well that I also almost ran over one of my AirBnB hosts in Montreal.

She arranged to drop off the keys to me in front of a coffee shop. She knows my car and ran out into the street, behind my car. I didn't see her. This was 2 consecutive times she ran out into the street into my blind spot on a one way street and I almost hit her backing up not once, but twice. I actually yelled at her the second time and said "please do not run into the blind spot on my passenger side- come to the driver's side of my car." It's kind of common sense that a person should do that but accidents happen when people don't exercise common sense.

SUV that rolled, killed Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was under recall

Hello all
The SUV that rolled down a driveway and killed Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly, government records show.

Yelchin, 27, a rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the rebooted series, died Sunday after his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee pinned him against a mailbox pillar and security fence at his home, Los Angeles police said.

The 2015 model-year Grand Cherokees were part of a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles announced by automaker Fiat Chrysler in April, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show.

The agency urged the recall because of complaints from drivers who had trouble telling if they had put the automatic transmissions in park. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away.

Fiat Chrysler expected to send recall notification letters to owners on May 16, according to a memo to dealers, but it's not known whether Yelchin received or saw his letter. The company was working on a fix and expected to have a final remedy in October or later, the letter said.

Investigators were looking into the position of Yelchin's gear shift at the time of the accident, Officer Jane Kim said. The actor had gotten out of the vehicle momentarily, but police didn't say why he was behind it when it started rolling.

Fiat investigating incident

Fiat Chrysler said in a statement Monday that it was investigating and it was premature to speculate on the cause of the crash. It offered sympathies to Yelchin's friends and family.

The highway safety agency received 121 reports of crashes related to the gear shift problem, records show. Fiat Chrysler said in April that it's aware of 41 potentially related injuries.

The recalled vehicles, including nearly 812,000 in the U.S., have an electronic shift lever that toggles forward or backward to let the driver select the gear instead of moving along a track like a conventional shifter. A light shows which gear is selected, but to get from drive to park, drivers must push the lever forward three times.

The recalled vehicles sound a chime and issue a dashboard warning if the driver's door is opened while they are not in park. But the push-button ignition won't shut off the engine if not in park, increasing the risk of the vehicles rolling away after drivers have gotten out.

The Grand Cherokee gear shifters were changed in the 2016 model year so that it works like those in older cars.

Tributes abound for young actor

Coroner's officials ruled Yelchin's death an accident after an autopsy. The results of any toxicology tests would not be known for months, coroner spokesman Ed Winter said.

Yelchin's friends found him dead after he failed to show up for an audition early Sunday.

Director J.J. Abrams, who cast Yelchin in the franchise, wrote in a statement that he was "brilliant ... kind ... funny as hell, and supremely talented."

His death was felt throughout the industry.

"What a rare and beautiful soul with his unstoppable passion for life," said Jodie Foster, whose 2011 film The Beaver co-starred Yelchin.

"He was equal parts serious thinker and the most fun little brother you could ever dream of."

Versatile actor

Yelchin began acting as a child, taking small roles in independent films and various television shows, such as ER, The Practice, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. His breakout big-screen role came opposite Anthony Hopkins in 2001's Hearts in Atlantis.

Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. He briefly flirted with skating lessons, too, before discovering that he wasn't very skilled on the ice. That led him to acting class.

"I loved the improvisation part of it the most, because it was a lot like just playing around with stuff. There was something about it that I just felt completely comfortable doing and happy doing," Yelchin told The Associated Press in 2011.

Yelchin could do big sci-fi franchises and vocal work in The Smurfs, while also appearing in more eccentric and artier fare, like Jim Jarmusch's vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive and Jeremy Saulnier's horror thriller Green Room, a cult favorite that came out earlier this year.

Gabe Klinger, who directed Yelchin in the upcoming film Porto, recalled a conversation with Jarmusch about Yelchin before Klinger cast him.

"Jim was like, `Watch out. Anton read Dostoyevsky when he was like 11 years old!"' Klinger said.
