I think it's a combination of things. Historically the attitude towards it is more liberal than most places. I mean, you can tell by the amount of strip clubs compared to other major cities in North America. This would indicate a healthy escorting scene, usually. In terms of quality, it helps that there's a gazillion universities/colleges in the downtown/night life area. I think most major cities have 1 or 2 at most in the downtown area if any. This is just my opinion.

Sorry for the typo. It should be escorting, not exporting. I corrected it.

I do not live in Montreal, but I am just curious why Montreal becomes a good place for escorting. About comments provide some insights. Thanks.

Praise ( or blame ) the separatist they are responsible for the crappy economy of the early 80s that drove out all the head offices, factories and jobs leading to increased escort activity and lower prices. Lower real estate prices as well.

    tian88,

What are things like where you come from?

Interesting point of view indeed. Since 1976 Toronto and the rest of Canada boomed. Quebec growth was much slower. But now we end up living in a poorer province because of that, but still with a very high quality of living. The Economist named Montreal best city in the world for quality of life! So yes price are lower because of our poorer economy. But still it is only one factor. The other important factor are the girl. Generally quebec girl are willing to please and to deliver good service. It is well known in Canada that Quebec girl are more "open" or as we say "ouverte d'esprit" Probably our french culture is responsable for that. I dont' know but one thing I know for sure is that I am very happy to live here

    Cheers,

The U.S. market is much, much different than Montreal's.

Montreal has a strong agency system that handles administrative tasks such as scheduling and transportation, making sex work very appealing to 18-22 year old college students and/or single mothers who are not, by and large, accustomed to juggling administrative tasks. U.S. law enforcement makes life hell for agencies, particularly those that cross state lines, so the lack of big U.S. agencies means you will find relatively few 18-22 year olds in the U.S. providing the same level of service as those in Montreal.

From the standpoint of 23-40 year old U.S. escorts, you can find the same quality in the U.S. as in Montreal, but the price per hour for the same quality is often twice as much or more. These escorts generally work as independents or with agencies in the few US cities that do not use their police to actively attack agencies. Most all large US cities leave independent escorts alone with respect to law enforcement provided the escort screens her clients and charges a lot per hour. So in addition to paying her a lot, you have to provide her with enough personal information to convince her that you are not the police. That is not palatable to a lot of johns that are accustomed to to lower-cost and little or no screening environment of Montreal. Also, there are more skanky escorts in the US that provide mediocre service than in Montreal, so you need to read a lot of reviews of a U.S. service provider than a Montreal service provider to find the quality ones in the U.S., and most of the U.S. focused review boards like TER cost at least $25 per month.

So if you want to only see only 18-22 year olds, and only want to pay $200 or so per hour, and don't want to provide screening information, forget about the US. There is a U.S. Review board section on merb where you can get sound information on a reasonable number of good U.S. escorts generally in the 23-40 year old range that often charge $400-$500 an hour. If you can get to Montreal often enough, forget about the US, but you can learn the ropes and have fun in the US if you spend enough time and money.

Although you can find $200 an hour or less escorts in the U.S., more often than not, you end up with a terrible experience, including the possibility of arrest if she is unreviewed, that you wish had not even occurred. That is why the US gets such a bad reputation on merb. If you try to pay Montreal prices in the U.S., you are asking for trouble.

Thanks Patron for explaining why there are so many Americans on the MERB board!
I was wondering myself how the US SP market is going...

It is like a lot of things in the U.S., it is going really well if you are rich. Unfortunately I am not rich.

For instance, my favorite agency in Vegas, 100 Proof, is going to raise their rate on Oct. 1 from $400 to $500 an hour. That is still less than most of the well-reviewed independents there. The agency owner says he has to do so to attract talent.

This thread did cause me to have a theoretical question. I think there is a strong cultural trend in the U.S. for families to provide a lot of financial support to young adults. Much more so than decades ago when there was more of an attitude of you are 18 and an adult, you are on your own. I am sure that years of English language advertising providing a guilt trip to working women for spending too little time with their kids that could only be alleviated by purching the advertised product contributed to this.

I just wonder if there is more of an old-fashioned you are an adult and you are on your own at 18 attitude in French-Quebec than in primarily English speaking places, particularly the U.S. but also in the rest of Canada. There are certainly a lot more 18-25 year old escorts in Montreal than other places, and I am always amazed at how poised and mature they are. They are simply a lot more comfortable with themselves than the few escorts a person meets in that age group in other places.

I suppose you could argue that the tremendous availability of student loans reduces the incentive for young women in the US to pursue sex work, but it seems that Montreal young women just seem more worldly overall than their US counterparts at the same age.

Patron you do bring interesting point but honestly I think the answer is much simpler than that.

From 20 to 28 I traveled all over Canada and lived in many differents places, mainly in Alberta and BC. That was 20 years ago. The first thing that struck me was the difference with women in regards to sex relation, or the lack of it! I was not used to that as for me in Quebec even back then we were seing sex more like a wonderful activity to do, almost like a sport

    Cheers,
