I almost paid a lady to have dinner with me

What follows is a true story that happened more than fifteen years ago. I do not mean to take sides or judge any of the protagonists in the paying for dinner thread.

I have been married for 20++ years, and have been faithful for all except the last two years when my wife went through menopause and unilaterally decided that our sex life was over. Previous to that, we were making love all over the place, three or four times a week, and it was as much fun for her as it was for me. I mention this so the reader understands my frame of mind when those events transpired.

Back in the late eighties, I used to travel a lot to Europe on business, and my wife would accompany me most of the time. But this time I am alone in Paris, staying at the Georges V where we used to stay all the time and were very well known to the staff. This was most true with the chief concierge, Andre, who would always manage to find us last minute tickets to the opera, musicals and shows. And naturally, I always tipped him to his satisfaction.

Now I would never ever consider going to a restaurant by myself. If I am alone in a city and I cannot find anybody to have dinner or lunch with me, then I will either order from room service or call a place that delivers. And come to think of it, I do not remember ever seeing a single person having a solitary meal in any top notch restaurant I have visited.

So it is Saturday afternoon, and I really would like to have dinner at the Tour d'Argent, which was The Place back then. (It is still very highly rated to this day, but it has definitely lost some of its cachet). I find Andre at his counter and I ask him "Can you book me a table at the Tour D'Argent for tonight? “

He raises an eyebrow as he replies "Mais bien sur monsieur, but madame is not with you, are you thinking of going alone?"

You have to keep in mind that back in those days before Al Gore invented the internet, the only way you could set yourself up in Paris was through the good graces of the hotel concierge. So I tell him "Andre, this is where I need your help to find me a dinner companion."

Andre is deep in thought. I can see his face going through different emotions as the Gallic in him finally takes over: "Ah, I understand, monsieur has such a lovely wife, but he is lonely. I will fix you with the best girl I know, and you can be assured of my discretion when madame is back. But you really don't need to spend a fortune at the Tour d’Argent; those girls do not appreciate such places. Why don't you just have her come to your room?"

"No Andre, this is not what I had in mind, I really would like to just have dinner, and I only need a dinner companion, no more, no less."

It takes Andre a bit of time, but he finally understands my situation. He says "give me five minutes to make a phone call; I hope you will not be disappointed."

A few minutes later he finds me and tells me that all is set for 8:30, my dinner companion will be waiting for me in a taxi outside the hotel, and I should not discuss remuneration with her, I will settle with him later. So I say to myself, Andre is finally going to fleece me.

At the appointed time Andre leaves his desk to accompany me to the taxi waiting outside, as the staff in the lobby watch incredulously; Andre never leaves his desk for a guest. A stunning young woman steps outside the taxi, and he introduces me to Nicole. She is elegantly dressed in a simple black dress and wears no makeup. We exchange pecks, French style, and off we go to the restaurant. On the way she gives me a short history of the Tour d’Argent, and I can feel her excitement building as we get to the restaurant. We are led to our table, and I am a bit nervous as I observe the array of glassware and cutlery. I jokingly ask Nicole if we are going to use all these utensils, and she proceeds to explain every single item to me. We get the menus, and she goes through the different dishes and wines with me, and actually chooses everything without making me feel the least inadequate. As the meal proceeds, she explains each dish as if she had cooked it. I am enjoying this meal as I have never enjoyed a meal before. And I refrain from asking her how she knows this much about fine dining because I do not want to show my ignorance.

As we finish our meal with coffee and Armagnac, I am sorely tempted to make a pass at her. But somehow I think about what I have with my wife, and I restrain myself. The taxi ride back to my hotel is uneventful, and we finally exchange pecks as we both thank each other for a memorable evening.

I only get to see Andre the next morning. I ask him what I owe for last night. He looks me in the eye “Monsieur, I do not have children, Nicole is my niece and the daughter I never had. She just finished her ecole hoteliere, and taking her to the Tour d’Argent was a chance nobody in her situation would ever dream of having. And she tells me you were the perfect gentleman, which I never doubted, and for which we will both be forever grateful.”

So I never ended up paying that young lady to have dinner with me. However, in the past two years I have paid many young ladies for the pleasure of their company, and I never stop to think what the payment is supposed to cover. It could be for lunch or dinner, it could be for travel time, and it could be for carnal pleasure. I really do not care.

    Mr. X,

At least your wife gave you 20++ years of great sex....what you had in one week, I have to beg for in one month. So menopause is really the END!

But seriously, your story is amazing. You write like a novelist. Either that or Paris brings out one's literary talent. My favorite writer, Henry Miller, wrote his best works in Paris in the late 20s.

    Now, back on topic:

Good for you, it is your right to do what you like. I have no problems eating alone; in fact, I enjoy it. But there are some people who hate it. To each his own cher M. X!!!

    Correction on dining alone

Actually, I have to correct something. I do not like eating alone at a restaurant but at a cafe or bistro, no problem. I like to be with someone at a restaurant where I can enjoy good food, nice wine and great conversation. If I did pay for an SP to dine with me at a restaurant, I would make sure she was highly educated or older than me with lots of wordly experience. I prefer the wisdom of older women, especially older SPs.

One woman who I tried to invite out to dinner was Celine. She definetely would be worth paying for a one-on-one a dinner date. Another one I would take to dinner is Lili Love - she would be a great companion and offer me a special dessert.

I never got the chance to tell you how much I have enjoyed your posts. And you have been greatly supportive of my struggling efforts, much to my appreciation.

As someone who has had the pleasure and honor of dining with Celine both as a guest to her parties and as a host, you are definitely missing something. May the gods in their wisdom grant you this wish.

    Daringly,

I agree with you that it's your money and you can choose to spend it the way you like. But this whole thing about others trashing the concept of taking an SP on a trip because they cannot afford it is a little, well, self-promoting. I mean, yes, some are jealous. But many others simply do not care to take an SP who has little or no emotional ties with them to spend a week or two on vacation.

I will also admit that when I was single going on vacation with my buds, we had no problems picking up beautiful women. It wasn't always easy and it definetely was more of a challenge than paying for a beautiful SP to accompany you but the fun was in the challenge. The thrill of the hunt is always worth the trouble.

I have no problem dining alone at a restaurant - I usually end up chatting with the waitstaff. It's easier, of course, if they know you....I end up getting extra courses and extra drinks at no charge at one really nice French restaurant in Montreal.

Once place I really enjoy is Pied De Cochon in Montreal when I am alone. Then I sit at the bar and talk to the cooks. On one occasion I was able to compare notes on my version of their signature dish - got some important information.

Sounds good - I could introduce you to the sublime pleasure of hot, liquid foie gras...."Cromesqui" if you go alone.

    Follow your gut.

    Good for you Mr. X,

You did what felt right to you. As you indicated, you have paid for dinner companionship many times since and that is absolutely fine for you because it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. After all your not trying to please anyone else, your trying to please yourself, right?

I have seen more than a few men eating alone at top restaurants and have done so myself. For instance the last time I dined at Queue De Cheval in Montreal there was a middle aged gentleman eating a fine steak in their lounge area at a table in the window. I usually will opt for the lounge as well when alone although unfortunately some restaurants do not have a lovely, comfortable lounge/bar area in which to enjoy a meal. I do enjoy talking to the staff as well. The conversation with waitstaff is much more at ease when you are alone in my opinion and you can learn a lot from these very savvy locals.
"I can picture every move that a man could make
getting lost in her loving is your first mistake

Sometimes I think its a sin
When I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again"

Chefplus, Miss B. (I just can't get myself to call her Bitchelor), is saying that, in her experience at least, the SP that is treated to dinner by the client will have relaxed and felt a bond of trust during the meal that will greatly enhance the following bedroom escapade (meaning the SP will actually enjoy her time there).
And Miss B. is volunteering to be Mr. X's dinner companion to prove it...

    Am i right?

Despite all this, there is still something that strikes me as sad when someone would regularly have to pay for non-sexual companionship. .. to do this regularly, to be in a situation so often where you are alone .....and lonely.... that you have to pay someone to be, in effect, your friend just seems so desolate, so desperate.
Perhaps most outside of these circles would say the same of those who "have to pay" for sexual companionship, would they not? I would say that we all choose these things for our own valid reasons.

Actually, as a man with kids and wife, a too full life, lots noise and joy and strife, I revel in these rare times alone. I don't mind a meal in my own company. A few hours of peace. Time to reflect. Time to remember the days when I was free to wander around Europe alone with a backpack and meet whoever I met.

For me a dinner with a special companion is part and parcel of the perfect evening. I do it because it gives me pleasure and makes the whole experience better. But Train, based on your previous writings I guess we have some similar tastes in companionship. Having begun with one like those 10 that you refer to, now....well nothing else quite satisfies.

Paying does not get you laid.

Next time, go by yourself. Walk up to a girl, smile, and say 'hi.' And for the love of God don't buy her a drink.
