Clavie,

Let me add one other thing not mentioned in the above thread. I purchased for $11.99 the Netflix streaming HD plan to go with the disc plan. I ended up cancelling the disc plan and now just have the streaming HD plan. The reason why is that unless a disc is in HD broadcast format you will not be able to watch it in full screen mode. Just like the non HD channels you will only be able to see them in wide or smaller screen. The Netflix HD library is more limited on older films and TV shows but has many new films and TV shows. I just finished The 4th season of Sons of Anarchy which is an awesome TV show but it took me like a month or more and I still have 3 more seasons to go! I recommend Netflix streaming HD plan to go with your new smart TV but make sure your internet provider has sufficient speeds for transmitting this content.

EB, how is your setup since you had it for awhile? Happy with the TV and sound bar?

Look behind you.
Check out Kijiji and the pawn shops, probably some great deals out there. My sons friends picked up a couple of good bargains.
Stick with brand names and make sure you can view the picture before you buy.

STN- I am very happy with the Sony 65" HD smart TV and Bose soundbar and subwoofer. I discovered that I can play Spotify on my TV, using my cellphone as a remote control! I have my own personal library filled with Rolling Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, The Doors, Bad Company etc., also some Yardbirds songs. Sound quality is excellent and the bass is very crisp with the subwoofer.

I use my TV for, (1) live sports (hockey playoffs and Yankees baseball), (2) music from the internet (Spotify) and (3) TV shows/films.

Clavie, one thing I should warn you about with the TV purchase. The electronics store will tell you that you will need a router for the smart TV. Depending on who your internet service provider is and what equipment they have, the router may be totally unnecessary. Call your internet service provider BEFORE you purchase the TV, tell them what you are purchasing and ask them if the new cable box set up they will give you has an adequate router or whether you need to buy one. I purchased a $100 router which was totally unnecessary, but I only learned this when the Cable Guy came out to set me up.

I've bought 3 different size and quality Samsung HD TV's from Costco in the last two years -- a 36"; 55" (4K), and a 65" 3D. I prefer Samsung but you should consider LG as well. Costco has the best prices bar none. You will have to get a sound bar (avg. $500) if you get a large TV ($1,500+). You'll have to listen to each to decide for yourself which one pleases your ears the most. If you want to splurge, then get a AV tuner, a pair of speakers and a subwoofer (it will cost you about $2,000). If you want to go nuts, you can spend up to $10,000 (minimum) on a sound system. In my younger days (youth causes guys to spend way too much on toys), I spent about US$20,000 on a sound system -- a pair of speakers (B&W) alone cost US$10,000 after much shopping and negotiating. I still have the system but hardly use it now.

I dont need too big, around 150cm for hanging on the wall in my living room. 1000$ budget.

How much does it make in inches? I absolutely am craptastic in metric measurements lol. I couldn't even give you my heigh in those...

Personally we have an LG in the living room, been having this TV for what... 6 years... ran a lot. At one point my grandmother was leaving with us and she would run the TV all day and then there would be somebody on it at night as well, only resting from midnight to 8 am pretty much.

My personal TV is a samsung, run a lot as well, but it has only 2 year.

I would say usually Samsung and LG are good brands, but obviously the new TVs are never as good as the old ones in term of duration. Those old TVs where built to pretty much last 30 years...lol

To my knowledge Costco doesn't sell OLED TVs..and IMO, those are the best TVs out there right now

I heard OLED are having some problems, staining and such... saw a couple reports, dunno how much they mean for the generality of it.
