I got the flu since Friday, it hit me like a brick in the face. It started with body aches, chills and fever. I haven't got that sick for years now.

I'm just coming out from the fog of pain and fever. I've done some research and did you know that:

Every year in the US, on average :

1. 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu
2. more than 200 000 are hospitalized from flu complications
3. about 36 000 die from flu

Each winter, my workplace offers free flu shots and I always refused them because I wanted my body to self immunize itself but after that episode I should seriously think about it for the next cold season.

When you're sick as a dog, you don't have time to think about sex ... :D

Once you experience what real flu can do, if you survive, you don't forget soon.

Get your flu shot. Not only will you provide protection for yourself, but you will help minimize the impact of flu on the population as a whole.

And hope that the H5N1 highly pathogenic "bird flu" currently festering around Europe and Asia, and headed for the Americas, doesn't learn how to transmit efficiently in humans. If it does it will produce a pandemic and likely kill millions because we have no immune memory of that strain and vaccines won't be ready to cover everyone soon enough.

I once turned down a flu shot, saying to my doctor's nurse that I used to take flu shots but used to get the flu anyway. According to her all that I got was a bad cold; real flu has you laid up for 6 weeks. Flu shots are no guarantee that you will not get a cold, as I discovered a few times this winter.

Six weeks in bed without sex, that's enough to kill a man ...:D

The Flu and a Cold are not the same thing... Getting Flu shots doesnt protect from getting a cold.

Vitamin C and minerals and reducing stress are the way to go.

Using Hand Sanitizer is a bad bad idea. Your body NEEDS those bacteria and virus to train your immuno-system, it's a fact. If you use sanitizers on a daily basis, you're only weakening your immuno-system in the long run. You're also trainting superbacterias that will resist sanitizers, which is a bigger problem than getting a cold. (it's not like you'll get Hepatitis or AIDS from hand contact...)

Just a funny note, those who die from the Flu, are those who have weakened immuno-system... So while getting the shots doesnt give your a 100% protection, weakening your immuno-system gives you a 100% probability of having a harder time fighting the flu or other infections/viruses.

Remember the good old times when you would only use vinegar and water to clean windows? Now the marketing execs will have you believe that u need Windex Extra-Strong with tri-penthol-diethynol to sanitize you're windows... Come on! It doesnt fo a better job. And 5 mins later the air will contaminate the window anyways...

True

Mostly not true. First, resistance to "sanitizers" is very different than resistance to antibiotics. It is controversial among those who study the effects of sanitizers whether their extensive use could give rise to so-called superbugs, and that usually refers to extensive household or commercial use. Second, use of sanitizers on hands so as to reduce hand-to-oral and hand-to-nose transmission is very effective when done appropriately, i.e. after contact with fomites or other people. That use doesn't touch the rest of your skin, and normal flora are repopulated within a very short time. Finally, you will not weaken your immune system by missing out on a few colds. It is constantly exposed to many and various challenges from all directions. Moreover, parents of young children will testify that suffering cold after cold doesn't make your immune system stronger, either.

Lastly, virulent pandemic flu strains, like in the 1918 epidemic, actually killed the young and healthy even more efficiently than the weak, because their vigorous immune responses created so much collatoral havoc.

I've gotten the flu shot the last couple years. Last year I was super healthy, but this year I got some really bad colds. If you've gotten the flu, you'll know the difference between that and a bad cold. I think it's a misconception that the flu shot will make you immune to flus. You can still get the flu when you get the shot, but ti'll be less severe.

As for those Purell's, I have to disagree somewhat. I think it's bad to use it 10-12 times a day, but I think on occasion it's good. I work in an environment where I need to work on people's computers and I dunno what the hell has been on those keyboards. Nothing like a good antibacterial rince a few times a day. I usually use soap, but I always Purell before eating lunch and before I leave for the day.

From what I have heard, the flu shot will only protect you from a certain strain of flu that is supposedly predicted will be most common. Apparently there are several different types of flu. So if you get a different strain that you were not vaccinated for, you are most likely out of luck.

I was not able to get a flu shot the last couple years here because of the short supply, but so far (knock on wood) no issues.

I have been doing pretty much what Daringly has done, taking 500MG of Vitamin C, plus a multivitamin, and taking Chromium Picolinate. Between working out and eating right these last few months, I have not even gotten a cold, while the rest of my colleagues and family have been sick on and off all winter, from flus to colds.

Purell bad to use? Why? The only active ingredient in Purell is that deadly compound, ethanol. If you are worried about Purell, you better never have a beer!

The sanitizers about which some have theoretical concerns are those for which resistance mechanisms may be similar to mechanisms for antibiotic resistance. Ethanol is not one of those.
