Did anybody see the story on CNN about a girl born with Spina bifida AND an undersized bladder?
Doctors at Wake Forest University pioneered a new procedure. They took some cells from her bladder and grew them in a petri dish. They molded them into a new bladder and placed them back inside her.
She's not the only one to have had this procedure. Six others have had 'new' bladders 'grown' in this way. All are apparently doing fine...no problems with rejection, obviously as the organs are really their own.
I can't yet comprehend the implications if this can be done with other organs. Right now, for every person in America who receives an organ transplant, there are four and a half waiting.
