Did a little research for you as I never really known why we say trente sous although I am an Habitant as you like to call us.

It means, you are being had, you loose in that trade.
But it also means, expect to loose a bit if you choose to upgrade.
In other words, there is a price to pay to be in business.

Haha i heard (and used this expression) in the past but i always wondered why old folks call 25 cents "un 30 sous". Now i know.
