For the longest time in my life I couldn’t find out why, in Quebec French 4 trente sous is a dollar !

Again today, somebody’s expression about changing his job was : I’m not ´changer 4 trente sous pour une piastre’ !!!

Can a pure Habitant explain please ?

You need more than 4 quarters to get an American dollar ?
LOL.

The original expression is :

«*Échanger 4 trente sous pour une piasse «*

It means, you are being had, you loose in that trade.

But it also means, expect to loose a bit if you choose to upgrade.

In other words, there is a price to pay to be in business.

It’s unfair, but that’s business ...

Thank you, that sums it pretty much and it makes sense. I guess lot of history there and the term kept going in Quebec.

Haha i heard (and used this expression) in the past but i always wondered why old folks call 25 cents "un 30 sous". Now i know.
