The real question is... Will self driving car kill more or less people then human driving car? The biggest problem is that there is no one to blame when a self driving car kills someone. How in hell will insurance company cope with that?

Imagine..

Seriously? Can you see a self driving vehicle navigating the Montreal streets in the Winter? Give me a break. Not to mention that companies like Google can't even get their phones bug free. But a phone's not going to kill anyone (in general).
We seriously have to consider what we want in society in the future. Self driving cars, while potentially saving lives, will also cause large proportion of the population to lose their livelihood. Truck drivers, taxi drivers, bus drivers, limo drivers....and this is just the start.
Beyond the automation of transportation it is just a matter of time before many, many people get replaced. Who needs people at the grocery counters in the future? Tim Hortons? McDonalds. Automation and AI are being designed to replace people by organizations which ultimately will put the money in their pockets while leaving a big proportion of mankind poor. Society needs to have this discussion.

Look behind you.
People are pushing technology too soon, there are plans of self driving semi trucks driving 24/7. Imagine the fatalities when these go haywire.

As bill gates mentioned we might have have to tax robot in the future. Not kidding.

Beside I would not mind that my robot goes to the office while I go skiing or golfing ;) (or to XO incall hehe, as long as the SP did not send her robot in her place!!!)

Who knows
I already put in an order for the self driving Tesla 3..
as I see it in the video, the car driven by human or machine would not have changed the outcome.

Machines are not supposed to make the same mistakes as humans. If something is in the road the car should stop or brake or get out of the way. That lady was smashed into pieces at unabated speed.

Totally agree, Although I feel sorry for the lady, she does what a lot of pedestrian do nowadays, jaywalking, just go in downtown Montreal and you'll see what I'm talking about!
But the problem is that our governing authorities ( Feds, Provincial and Municipal ) will not be more severe on delinquent pedestrian and cyclists, it's easier to go after the cars and trucks!

Imagine Montreal without any vehicle.........Ferrandez would be happy!

Not sure when but read an article about self driving cars in Quebec, with the government no fault insurance there were some liability issues. Personally I would never own one, electric either. Maybe if they could install a sound system through the exhaust that would sound like a lumpy LS-X.

Sounds something like this, video somewhere.
If I did not have a daughter in college it would be mine.

I saw the video and honestly what was this person thinking on crossing a street like that in the dark without checking and nothing to make her visible... The fault of this accident rely on the pedestrian/bycicle person, not the self driving car. An human wouldn't had done better.

On a somewhat related note, is ride sharing still a controversial topic in Montreal? The few times I have taken I was told that I had to sit in front seat and driver had to pretend that he was not working for Uber.

Look behind you.
Hope they perfect these driverless cars soon.
It would suck if they take away your licence when you get into your 80s and you fail a medical exam.
I would certainly buy one, it must be tough to depend on other people to buy your groceries or to use taxis anytime you want to get out of the house..

This would be a huge plus.

This technology has a long way to go. During the Tesla S crash of 2015 in Florida where the car drove write under a tractor trailer sheering the top of the car off and killing the driver, it was stated that the technology was partially based on radar signals being bounced off objects ahead in addition to other detection methods . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqsmhKQEn2c That doesn't make much sense, since radar doesn't depend on darkness, but could be affected by other things such as obscured objects. The Uber Car clearly never even detected the homeless woman running across the multiple lanes of highway, since there was no evasive action whatsoever on behalf of the car. Some engineer(s) need(s) to get his/her ass(es) kicked and come up with a better design. The detection system should have seen the homeless woman crossing the freeway several seconds before the collision occurred and taken evasive action. I also think the driver could have taken evasive action, had he been watching the road. This technology needs to much better than a human, in every aspect, before it will be fully accepted.

I am really surprised that officials allow self-driving vehicles on the road without being fully tested. Had this vehicle gone though proper testing, this unfortunate tragedy could have been avoided.

If we look at commercial airplanes, we allow an auto pilot functionality for virtually all commercial flights. The auto pilot system is fully tested beforehand and is also certified by either FAA, Transport Canada or other certification authorities before it is allowed for use. Why not allow similar testing and certification for self-driving vehicles?

Damn right easy going! And you know what. I perfectly know it's horrible to say that but the outcry is not that bad because the victim was a homeless poor woman killed.

Imagine how Uber would be in deep shit if it had killed the son of a state governor or other rich dude. We live in a unfair world.

Cheers,
