Hoffman's girlfriend allegedly behind harassment of Karlssons

by Shaamini Yogaretnam, The Ottawa Sun

A series of allegations made by the wife of the captain of the Ottawa Senators against a fellow teammate’s fiancée, detailing a season-long campaign of targeted online harassment, threatens to upend Ottawa’s locker room, leaving the futures of two of the team’s stars in question.

Melinda Karlsson, née Currey, has filed an application for an order of protection against the longtime girlfriend of Senators forward Mike Hoffman — alleging a campaign of harassment that plagued the Karlssons after the death of their son and through much of the last NHL season

The application for a peace bond sworn in front of Justice of the Peace Louise Logue on May 4, alleges that Monika Caryk, Hoffman’s partner, had threatened Melinda and husband Erik Karlsson from November 2017 to the date the information was sworn to.

This newspaper has also learned that there is an active Ottawa police investigation into the criminal harassment (stalking) allegations and that it is being probed by central district detectives. No conditions have been set out in the peace bond, which is similar to a restraining order, since it was never served on Caryk.

Hoffman and his camp, speaking on behalf of the forward and Caryk, vehemently deny the allegations.

No criminal charges have been laid against Caryk and none of the allegations against her has been tested in court.

In late November, the Karlssons announced on social media that they were expecting their first child, a son they would later name Axel Michael who was stillborn on March 19, 2018.

“Monika Caryk has uttered numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead,” says Melinda Karlsson’s sworn statement to the court.

Erik Karlsson, too, was allegedly targeted.

“She also uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to ‘end his career.’

“Monika Caryk has posted over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements about me as a professional.”

Though the application was sworn in early May, nearly one month after the Sens’ season ended in Boston, team officials, including general manager Pierre Dorion, and Hoffman have known about the allegations since the end of the regular season.

Reached on Tuesday afternoon after this newspaper broke the story, Hoffman said, “There’s nothing really for me to say, at this time. That’s all I can say.”

In a subsequent comment, Hoffman said, “There is a 150 per cent chance that my fiancée Monika and I are not involved in any of the accusations that have been pursued (that are) coming our way.”

Hoffman said that the couple believes “there’s no place for cyberbullying.”

In March, Sens captain Erik Karlsson blasted an anonymous online troll who, in the comments section of a post mourning his dead son, accused his wife of “popping painkiller medication” during her pregnancy.

In an Instagram post following his son’s death, Erik Karlsson posted a photo of Axel’s tiny footprints. In the post, Karlsson thanked the city and the team’s fans for their love and support and wrote: “We feel very lucky to be Axel’s parents. Even though he was stillborn, we know we will hold him again one day under different circumstances and the joy he gave us will be with us forever.”

The post garnered more than 10,000 comments, with the overwhelming majority of them expressions of support and sympathy for the couple. However, one comment, posted by user @sandydandy45, stood out: “I feel bad for the baby he didn’t have a chance with Melinda popping pain killer medication everyday.”

It took the league’s top defenceman just seven minutes to respond: “How dare you. You have been making fake accounts and buying hacked ones for months to harass me and my wife but this is an all new low even for you. You are a disgusting person.”

The user @sandydandy45 has since deactivated that account.

This newspaper also found other social media users coming to Melinda’s defence after Twitter user @petersonmegan51 used an anti-bullying event to insult her. That account has also since been deleted.

“We’ve offered to co-operate and do anything it takes to find out who is doing this, and support (the Karlssons),” Hoffman said, saying that the Karlssons are being harassed, but denying his fiancée’s involvement.

“Obviously this is a tough time that they’re going through, and we want to find out who is doing this, because for some reason it’s coming into our court, and it’s 150 per cent that it’s not us.

“We have nothing to hide. We’re willing to co-operate in any way to solve this and figure it out, and prove that it wasn’t us.”

In recent weeks, Caryk created a new Instagram profile, which she made private. That account calls her a “professional packer-unpacker,” “frenchdog enthusiast” and “Champagne lover.” After this newspaper published a story Tuesday detailing the allegations, a Facebook profile in her name was deactivated.

The peace bond application sworn against her on May 4, ordered a court date of May 25, but by that time, Caryk had yet to be served with the notice.

Court filings list her summer address from June to August as being in Waterloo. Her home from September to May — and during the NHL season — is listed as the McKellar Park home owned by Hoffman.

A peace bond, issued under section 810 of the Criminal Code, is similar to a restraining order, which typically only applies in family court situations. A peace bond is an order of protection issued by a justice of the peace when a person fears injury to themselves or to their property, or fears that someone is likely to commit a criminal offence, though one has not yet been committed.

With the NHL draft and the beginning of free agency around the corner — traditionally a time when teams test the trade waters — there has been much public speculation among hockey insiders that one, if not both players, will be dealt by the team.

Hoffman’s agent, Robert Hooper, believes it’s a certainty.

Hooper said Hoffman hasn’t asked for a trade but said he wouldn’t stand in the way of one either and that Dorion, Ottawa’s general manager, is aware of that.

“What we’ve indicated to Pierre is that, and let’s call a spade a spade, it would be very difficult for both parties — both Erik and Mike as well as the wives and the fiancées — to co-exist in the same wives’ room and the same dressing room,” Hooper said.

No demands have been made to Dorion from Hoffman’s camp but given the intense insider speculation Hooper said he thinks “the writing’s on the wall.”

“In my 22 years in this business I don’t believe that I’ve ever come across a situation like this,” Hooper said. “This is an exceptionally unique situation and one that’s very unfortunate. Hopefully it can get resolved as quickly as possible.”

Hooper said there have been several discussions with Dorion regarding the matter.

“This isn’t something we talked about with Pierre just today. We’ve been aware of this situation since the end of the season,” Hooper said.

The Senators released a statement Tuesday evening saying the organization is “investigating this matter in co-operation with the NHL and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the safety and privacy of our players and their families.”

Hoffman’s agent also expressed his confidence in Caryk’s innocence and told this newspaper Hoffman only learned of Melinda Karlsson’s application from the news report.

“It’s a very delicate and difficult situation,” Hooper said. “At this stage, we haven’t been provided anything at this point in time that would indicate Mike or Monika is involved with this type of situation.”

Hooper expressed some frustration and disappointment with only having “Mike and our side” finding out about the order of protection application from the media and not the police.

“I would have thought in this day and age … I’m surprised they weren’t able to locate Mike quicker than they have,” Hooper said.

(As a private peace bond application, the application was made by Karlsson herself, not the police. And as Caryk was the only named defendant, the summons can only be served on her, not Hoffman.)

Hooper said that the forward and defenceman have not discussed the issue.

“I think this has been between Melinda and Monika and less between Mike and Erik,” he said.

In nine seasons with the Senators, Karlsson has established himself as one of the greatest players in the franchise’s history.

He’s finished as the league’s top-scoring defenceman four times and has won the Norris Trophy twice, the award given to the NHL’s top defender.

Karlsson has also led the Senators in scoring for the last five years, though he shared the title with winger Mark Stone last season, a disappointing campaign that saw the club miss the playoffs just one year after having come within a goal of making the Stanley Cup finals.

Karlsson, who succeeded Jason Spezza as the Senators’ ninth captain in 2014, signed a seven-year, $45-million deal in 2012.

The annual average value of $6.5 million made him the league’s 14th highest-paid defenceman last season.

Karlsson is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2019, leaving the Senators with three options before that date: re-sign him, which would require giving him a substantial raise; trade him; or let him walk in free agency.

Hoffman, meanwhile, has been one of the Senators’ most consistent goal scorers during his tenure with the club.

He was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 draft, with the 130th pick overall, and for the last four seasons he’s led the team in goals.
Hoffman earned Calder Trophy consideration as the league’s top rookie in 2014-15, when he scored a team-high 27 goals. Playing on a one-year contract, he improved the total to 29 goals the following season.

Following the 2015-16 season, he was rewarded with a four-year, $20.75 million deal, of which he is now halfway through.

The Karlssons did not return a request for comment.

I was listening to Tony Marinaro's show this morning when he was discussing this matter with an Ottawa reporter. Marinaro pointed out that Karlsson might be very difficult to move or sign with another team if Melinda Karlsson's allegations against Monika Caryk are proven to be false. Would other teams want to bring along someone with so much drama in their lives? But if it was indeed Monika Caryk cyberbullying the Karlssons then Mike Hoffman's NHL career may very likely be over unless he dumps his fiancee. But Hoffman was already on the trading block even before the cyberbullying began. But now which team will want him on their team?

We've since learned that players on other teams have already told their team that they better not wind up with Mike Hoffman in their dressing room. I've also heard that he wasn't the greatest of teammates going back to his junior hockey days. Other NHL players' wives have commented that they were surprised Monika Caryk was the one named in the complaint.

The assistant GM was charged with sexually harassing a young male hotel shuttle driver while in Buffalo a few weeks ago. Daniel Alfredsson leaves the organization for the second time supposedly due to his displeasure with owner Eugene Melnyk and where the team's direction was going. The coaching staff is under the gun and the GM never knows how long he'll last before Melnyk impulsively fires him. What a mess!!!!

Je suis entierement d'accord. On top of that she claims Monica Karyk sent her over a thousand texts which attacked her & Erik. The accusations also do not surprise other players' wives who know Karyk. I also heard today on Hockey Central (SN) that fights/quarrels among players' wives happens more frequently than we think. Host Darren Millard claimed he knows of at least one team in the league where two of the wives constantly have to be kept an eye on wherever they go and have to sit in different of the arena whenever both are attending the same game. He refused to say which of the teams he was referring to.

I remember an incident in the late 90's when Alex Mogilny's wife was supposedly having an affair with Shane Corson. Word of this came about after Mogilny left the Leafs during a road trip on the west coast in order to hurry back home in Toronto to 'take care of a personal matter'.

While teammates with the St-Louis Blues Brendan Shanahan wound up having an affair with his best friend Craig Janney's wife. This absolutely devastated Janney and he had to take time off from his respective team at the time. Shanahan ended up marrying Janney's wife and they remain happily married to this day. I was told recently that Shanahan and Janney have never spoken since.

Doc,

I am very surprised that you did not mention Tyler Seguin banging then Boston Bruins teammate Nathaniel Horton's girl, a move which got his ass traded out of Boston, apparently because the whole team saw it as a backstab. At the time the trade made absolutely no sense from a hockey standpoint, but it was not made based on hockey related issues.

Can Karlsson and Hoffman coexist after this?

Senators will suffer greatly until truth is out in Karlsson-Hoffman story

by Don Brennan, The Ottawa Sun

Just when it looked like the Senators season from hell was mercifully over, things took an unbelievable turn for the worse.

A million times worse.

And don’t look now, because the end is nowhere in sight.

Weeks after captain Erik Karlsson had a face-to-face parking lot confrontation with teammate Mike Hoffman over a belief Hoffman’s fiancée, Monika Caryk, was guilty of unthinkable harassment of his wife, the matter wasn’t settled.

Melinda Karlsson, filed an application for an order of protection alleging Caryk has threatened her and posted “over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements” from Nov. 17 up to and through stillbirth of the Karlsson’s son on March 19.

The accusations go far beyond disturbing: Caryk allegedly wished the child and mother to die and that someone “take out (Karlsson’s) legs to end his career.”

Hoffman emphatically denies Caryk’s involvement.

“We’ve been aware of this situation for months,” said Mike Liut, the managing director of the hockey division at Octagon Agency, which represents Hoffman. “This happened at the end of the year. We’ve been very clear with the club. I’ve talked to the players’ association about it. We’ve been very up front about Mike’s support of Monika and denial of what’s going on. He told that to Erik face-to-face at the end of the season.

“Mike has made himself available to get to the bottom of it. Cyber-bullying in our society is not good. It’s bad. This is epidemic. That’s certainly not something Mike and Monika is going to engage in.

“It’s been very perplexing for them. They’ve been very supportive of the Karlssons, and what has gone on, notwithstanding the accusation, and are really mystified as to how this is landing on Monika.

“Mike is not involved. He’s supporting Monika, and they’ve done some research. They clearly want to find out who this is (that’s responsible.)”

This story absolutely trivializes everything else that went amiss for the Senators through the 2017-18 campaign:

• Icon Daniel Alfredsson’s decision to bolt from the organization for a second time, just when it looked like he might settle into a full-time management role.

• The team’s dramatic fall from a berth in the Eastern Conference final to 30th place in the league standings.

• The trading of Kyle Turris, a popular player and figure in the community.

• Owner Eugene Melnyk’s veiled threats that the Senators would relocate if attendance didn’t improve.

• The sudden and unexplained departure of Tom Anselmi, the chief executive and president, less than a year after he was hired.

• Melnyk’s decision not to replace Anselmi but to take over the roles himself.

• The #Melnykout signs that popped up around town, paid for by fans pleading for an ownership change.

• The trouble assistant GM Randy Lee got himself into in Buffalo.

And anything else that has temporarily slipped the portion of our mind overloaded with Senators problems.

No, this is far worse than any of it. This is a gigantic problem between the club’s best player and its top scorer, and it has surely divided the room.

This is crazy stuff. Incredulous. It’s a dysfunction of mammoth proportions.

“As a hockey player, I’m f- – – ing outraged over something like this,” said one veteran outside the organization. “If this was ever going on in a team, and I’m sure it is in today’s world, to some degree … it’s too hard to win. You just can’t have this. You can’t have the smell of it.”

Somebody called it “the story of the year.”

How about the story of all years?

This could be turned into a made-for-TV movie, except it might be too far-fetched. And don’t expect the W Network’s Hockey Wives to dare touch it.

Who is telling the truth? Melinda or Monika?

Until that comes out — and the investigation could be both long and arduous — the Senators will suffer greatly.

They’ve been trying to trade Hoffman. They want to do it before the draft in 10 days. Nobody will want anything to do with him before his fiancée is proven innocent or guilty.

Who wants to put their own room at risk?

Same goes for Karlsson, who in one year will seek to become one of the highest-paid players in the game. The Senators say they’ll offer him a contract extension when permitted by league rules in three weeks. It’s believed Karlsson will reject it, forcing the Senators to trade him.

But if Melinda is wrong with her suspicions or proof, and the sicko continues to harass her, does that not limit the number of teams willing to pay up prospects and draft picks and $80 million-$100 million for her husband?

Either way, one of Monika or Melinda appears to be in serious trouble. It’s past the tipping point. One of them is going to be guilty of something. Either harassment or defamation.

And one hockey player still very much in his prime earning years could take a hard hit.

“Mike is fully co-operative, a categorical denial,” said Liut. “He has offered to help in any way he can to get to the bottom of what it is. To find this person (responsible), to the degree it is possible.

“Of course, if it isn’t possible, then it leaves me numb … after what’s been said about her.”

Liut knows his client’s reputation could be on the line.

“Nobody wants to have anything like this attached to their name. As far as Mike is concerned, he has to stand by Monika, and he is. This is why we’ve been so adamant about pursuing in a co-ordinated effort with the Karlssons to find out who it is that’s doing it. Because it’s not Mike and Monika.

“The rest will play itself out.

“It’s a serious subject. It’s not just news,” Liut added. “This is a young couple’s marital relationship. This is a hockey player’s career, and this is a young lady’s lifelong reputation at stake.

“And, not to forget, that Erik has been harassed. Athletes expect they’re going to be harassed. In today’s social media world, it’s amplified.

“There’s a great deal of compassion, as this circumstance is unfathomable.”

As is the whole story. Even in this Senators season.

Sens will suffer greatly until truth comes out

What a mess!!!!

Ottawa trades Mike Hoffman to San Jose

This morning the Ottawa Senators finally got rid of problematic forward Mike Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks. The Senators dealt Hoffman, prospect defenceman Cody Donaghey and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft to the San Jose Sharks for Danish forward Mikkel Boedker, defenceman Julius Bergman and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

Although the return isn't much since San Jose had been trying to get out of the under-achieving Boedker's bad contract, Ottawa had to absolutely get rid of Hoffman due to the recent turmoil and his equally-questionable contract. I had heard recently that Florida was interested in Hoffman but deemed his price to be too high for them.

After Evander Kane's re-signing to a multi-year deal the team surprised everyone by having another so-called 'problem' player on their team. Coach Peter DeBoer had passed on Hoffman during his years coaching in the OHL and Hoffman wound up having to play in the Q.

San Jose Sharks trade Mike Hoffman to Florida Panthers

A week after a story broke about his fiancee's alleged harassment of Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson’s wife, Mike Hoffman was traded — twice.

Soon after the Senators sent the forward to San Jose, the Florida Panthers acquired Hoffman from the Sharks. They sent a 2019 second-round pick and fourth- and fifth-round selections in this year’s draft to the Sharks for Hoffman and a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft. That's a great trade for Doug Wilson's SJ Sharks!!! And it also makes it appear that Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion (whom Montreal radio personality Tony Marinaro calls a very bad general manager) totally got fleeced!!!

Many will also have trouble to understand why Panthers GM Dale Tallon would pay that much for Hoffman. However Tallon was rumoured to be interested in acquiring Tallon from Ottawa previously but believed Ottawa's asking price to be too much. More than what he gave San Jose???

Dorion likely wanted to trade Hoffman as far from the eastern conference as possible and that's likely the reason why his asking price to Florida was somewhat high. Little did he know that hours after making the trade that Hoffman would be right back in the eastern conference! Hillarious!! Who won the trade?? Mike Hoffman!!! By a mile!!! He got traded to a much better team in a city with considerably better weather and where there is no state taxes. Well done, Mike!!! Or should i say Ms Karyk??:lol::lol:

The Senators kept the guy with the hotter wife. This was all basically a cat fight between catty women and it’s sad that it disrupts a hockey team roster. All of the player wives should behave and get along. I remember around 6 or 7 years ago one of the Yankees fan websites doing a contest on “hottest WAGs” which I think was won by Laura Posada, wife of then Yankees catcher Jorge Posada. However the losing wives and Gfs did not turn on Laura Posada even though a few of them were arguably hotter. I think Karlsson’s wife clearly would win that competition for the Senators if you ask me

Hoffman has been on the trading block for some time now. We're hearing he's always had the reputation of not being an ideal teammate ever since his junior days. However it's entirely possible that what lead to the team wanting to trade him all along was the issues with his fiancee, who's supposedly been at her cyberbullying best since last fall. Why else would they want to get rid of their leading scorer over the past four seasons?

Karlsson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this upcoming season and it'll cost the Sens a whole lot of $$ to keep him in Ottawa. He's already said he won't accept a 'hometown discount' and is willing to relocate. He hasn't been the same player since undergoing surgery during the past offseason and the team isn't convinced he'll regain the form he's displayed in the past. Personally i believe all he needs is a change of scenery and i also tend to believe that Karlsson thinks the same way. The team currently isn't going anywhere and there are other important players that need to be re-signed.

If i'm a betting man i'd wager that Karlsson will be dealt during the current offseason and will be playing somewhere else once the new season gets under way. If he has no intention of re-signing i can't see Ottawa hanging on to him throughout the season when his value to them is likely at its highest at the present time.

In other news i just learned that the Toronto Maple Leafs have recently added a temporary ice surface at the ACC in order to make a video specifically made to lure free agent superstar John Tavares to the Leafs. I'm not sure what's on the video or if it's even complete. Tavares was born and raised in Toronto and grew up a Leafs fan so i'm not sure if a video would make that much of a difference in coaxing him to join the Leafs. Maybe CGI was used and Tavares appears to be playing along with fellow Maple Leafs (such as Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly) in the video. Who knows. I'm actually somewhat surprised that the Maple Leafs would go after Tavares considering they have several younger players to re-sign (incl. Matthews). It's also quite possible they could deal some of their younger talent during the offseason (and as soon as next week) in order to free up room under the salary cap in order to offer Tavares a maximum offer.

Tavares is the one holding all the cards and he'll be getting many offers, including from the Montreal Canadiens. But that's another team going nowhere (like the Isles) for years so i doubt he'd sign there considering all the turmoil always surrounding that organization.

Another thing i'm hearing these days is that the only slight chance Erik Karlsson re-signs with Ottawa will only happen if Eugene Melnyk sells the team. Melnyk and the organization's past decisions have led to the departure of Sens icon Daniel Alfredsson and now Karlsson will likely depart also due to his displeasure with the owner, among many other things.

The diminishing attendance doesn't help either. If the team continues to struggle fan support will continue to sink. The team had a hard time selling out a year ago during the third round of the playoffs. The thing is: THE ARENA IS TOO FAR!!!!

Mark Stone & Matt Duchesne will need to be re-signed. By the way the Senators still owe a first-round pick to the Avalanche from the Matt Duchesne trade. If not this year that pick will be surrendered next season. Considering they finished near the bottom of the standings that pick will be surrendered next season. They better hope they make the playoffs!
