    New personalized car tags.

On July 27th, SAAQ finally allowed Quebecers to personalize their car tags for 250$

It was said that from July 27th up until Sunday night, the website had so many people asking for personalized car tags, that the SAAQ had to shut down the online option and reopen it at 7:30 sharp Monday morning.

The word I originally wanted for my car was available and I was able to order it. I’m so happy. I’m waiting to receive it. No, it’s not my real name and it’s not MOCHA either, as I wanted to stay incognito, but both of them were available this morning when I checked. I also ordered two more because I just wanted to have those plates before somebody else do.

I must say that I’m extremely surprised, and pleased, that Anglophone words were authorized despite Quebec’s 101 law on French language... I suspect that if only French words were allowed, the service would not have been that popular or lucrative for SAAQ. I for one would not have used the personalized service if French was the only option.

One thing I find very sad, is that the service is only available online, which means you cannot order your tags in person with cash or debit. The only payment options are Visa or Mastercard (real ones, not prepaid or visa debit, and no Amex), so this is particularly unfair for people that have bad credit and cannot get a credit card, or don’t have the right kind...

I tried many different name out of curiousity, and many were already assigned. Here are a few names I find cool:
    PHOENIX
    BLACK
    SPIDER
    PASSION
    GHOST
    MISFIT
    BADBOY
    BAD
    NO1
    NUMBER1
    CHAMP
    PRIDE
All of these were taken though....

Many country names were gone also, like Jamaica, Haiti, Haitian, Italia, China... Africa was still available, but it will surely be taken soon. I really like country tags because it’s fun to see diversity and people that are proud of their back ground.

Funny ones that were taken already:
    PATATE
    POUTINE
    HAHAHA
    CRAZY
    SMILE
    BROKE
    WOW
    HELP
    STOP
    BACON
    SINGLE
    TAKEN
    WIFE

Surprisingly, HUSBAND and MARRIED are still available !!!

The reason why only credit cards are accepted is that once the transaction is validated Visa or Mastercard will pay even it it's a fraud. This is not the case with a debit card. As people with a bad credit... it's surely not a good choice to pay $250 for this "service" and there is an annual additional fee of $35 for the administration... On long term it is expensive and the benefit not obvious, but to each one to decide.

Also never forget, when your car is so called personalized, it is very easy to identify where and when you are by anybody already knowing you. Is it really what we want... Personnaly, a big NO!

    Hi

No, I ordered 3 tags with three different words.

This is what the SAAQ says about ordering tags:

You can order a personalized car tag if:
“You do not own a vehicle, but you have informed the SAAQ that you are committed to becoming the owner or lessee of a vehicle within the next four years.”

A personalized licence plate reported missing or stolen cannot be reprinted with the same personalized character combination. To obtain a new personalized licence plate, you must submit a new request for a different character combination and pay the personalized licence plate acquisition fees.”

So basically, you have four years to put your new tag on a car. If within four years, you still haven’t bought or leased a new car for that tag, well you already have it anyway, so you keep it as souvenir. I’m sure some people bought the tag just to get the tag, and not put it on the car itself.

And my guess is that alot of people will say that they got their tag stolen just to be able to order another one and keep the previous, as it’s impossible for anyone to order a plate that’s already been printed...

I ordered two extra tags because I have four years to buy two other cars. Will I buy two new cars within the next four years? I don’t know. I bought the tags “just in case” and because the SAAQ let me !!!

Having bad credit doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is broke, has 0$ in the bank, doesn’t have a good job, or currently owes money. It just means the person fucked up at some point... Some people pile up bills and take years to pay them off because they rather pay more important stuff first. Is it a smart idea? Probably not, but for some, it works well, and allows them to breathe and not give all their money to businesses as soon as they get their paychecks. You can still save money as you pay off debts. Your life and emergencies come first, companies you owe money to can wait a little bit.

As for being easily recognized by our tag... True, but I live a pretty boring life outside of my work. I have a certain routine, and will never be caught being at places I wasn’t supposed to be !!!

    Thanks for the answer Mocha

Where I live, you have to have a car registered in order to get plates, so you cannot " Buy Extra " ones

When you take a car off the road, you have to return your plates, or your license will get suspended ( DMV gives you a receipt when the plates are returned to them , as proof... )

Well, what I wrote is in regards to personalized car tags. I’m not sure if the same rules apply for regular tags, and if you can order tags for your future cars.....

DMV doesn’t allow you to put your car in storage for a while or discard it completely?

This is what the SAAQ says about car tags when storing or discarding a car:

    Vehicle storage:
Leave the licence plate on the stored vehicle.

    Vehicle discarding:
You can remove it from the vehicle and destroy it so that nobody can use it, or keep it for up to 3 years to register a vehicle that requires a licence plate of the same category.

If 35$ for you is an expensive gadget to put on your car, you must be completely baffled to see mags, tainted windows, stripes and everything else people put on their car...

$35 is nothing for me, but I don't have credit problems. My comment was addressed to this part of the original post concerning people with bad credit. " The only payment options are Visa or Mastercard (real ones, not prepaid or visa debit, and no Amex), so this is particularly unfair for people that have bad credit and cannot get a credit card,"

Anyway, if you can't have a credit card, those days, your biggest problem is not that you can't have a personnalised plate for your car. And as mentionned there is a simple reason why they don't accept debit card. This being said everyone decides by himself where to put his money. Je crois que Titilleur essaie juste de me titiller... LOL!!!
