Does anyone ever retire?

This is a topic that has been alluded to in various threads/posts and polls but has never been discussed on its own merits.

When Sps retire there seems to be a bit of a wink/nod attitude,over/under comments about when will she return, etc.More of a vacation/sabbatical view.

When a hobbyist(do not like the term) retires it is different in that he either disappears for good without fanfare or returns when he sees fit.

I will broaden the discussion by asking "Does anyone ever retire?"

The retirements that receive the most attention are those of athletes.Does an athlete really retire or do they simply leave active competition? Most stay on as coaches, scouts, mentors, participate in "oldtimer" events, lend their names to worthwhile causes - especially true of those who had careers cut short due to injury. This example may be extended to various trades, professions, disciplines etc.One way or another the person remains involved
at a reduced level or via emeritus status.

How does this view of retirement relate to the boards and the activities of posters.Handles can be retired and re-activated so this would not be a criteria so basically it comes down to a posters word or credibility.

If someone announces their retirement and then returns then their posts should be viewed within the context of an "unretirement".Eventually if they retire too often their credibility will rank with that of Chicken Little.

The one area that concerns me is that of a poster that announces a retirement(length irrelevent) but returns with an attitude or implication that the past does not matter or cannot be put in context or that certain status should be given their views, posts, positions, etc.

No PMs only public comment.

You are correct, eastender. What gets me is the long, dramatic goodbyes, followed closely by the inevitable heartfelt "we will miss you", "what will we do without you", etc. I'd rather go out on a good note, than be remembered for sticking around too long.

How many times have the Rolling Stones done a farewell tour? How about Celine Dion or Barbara Streisand? Michael Jordan "retired" twice from 2 sports if I remember correctly?

My feeling is - How can we miss you when you won't go away!

The Stones won't retire because they bore easily, and they don't know how to do anything else with their life (or probably they love their after-concert groupies!!)

More seriously, I'm ready to accept a premature retirement announcement (apparently, VERY premature!) that has been recanted. What is needed to regain some peace on this board is (a) a statement that this announcement was a mistake, and (b) the deletion of the same premature retirement announcement thread and the promise of no more of these in the future.

And (c) ice cream for everybody at least once a week (or Prozac for others);)

Obviously You Do

Why does anyone care ?

For those who have been on these boards over the yrs, we've all seen, heard and/or been a part of these announcements whether publicly or privately stated and frankly it makes no difference, as people are not harming anyone in changing their minds as to whether they stay or go.

Obviously you do or you wouldn't have posted the same negative comment twice in one day in the same thread. As you have stated elsewhere so eloquently we live in a democracy - so the board members are free to discuss retirement if they so desire - after all are they harming anyone?.

I think we are getting insight into the ups and downs experienced by the various board members, their attachments, their comfort levels with each other, comraderie, etc.Coming out of retirement implies confidence that they will be allowed back into a group.I'm sure that if posters are willing then the thread will provide us with further insight.

On the other hand are you saying that your posts are not to be taken literally?

LOL! I believe that I am both retired and retarded!:p

In all seriousness, this thread was obviously started to gauge all of our views on retiring from the hobby. I also suspect there was an agenda behind this thread but I will give eastender the benefit of the doubt and share some of my views.

Retirement is never easy, especially if you love your job or love your hobby. I can honestly say that I love meeting young, beautiful and intelligent women for a nice encounter. However, I do hope that this hobby does not become a permanent facet of my life because I am not suited for it. I tend to get attached to certain ladies and unwillingly forget the nature of the relationship. This is because I look for deep encounters where I look to share a lot more than sex with the ladies.

I never become delusional, however, knowing full well that I paid for these encounters. At the end of the day, SPs work for money, just like the rest of us, not flattery and not to meet Mr. Romeo who will sweep them off their feet and carry them off into the sunset. Having said this, this isn't just any job and it could be just as difficult for SPs to separate their emotions from the job. They are more cognizant of the boundaries than some clients that let themselves go but they can, in very rare cases, get attached to a client. We are all humans, not machines.

Now, getting back to retirement. I now feel that it was a poor choice of words. You can retire from a job and never look back but it is much harder to retire from a pleasurable hobby that you enjoy. The key word here is "enjoy". I will admit that my enjoyment or excitement is not the same as it was when I first embarked into hobbyland. This is normal but I still enjoy meeting new gems and reviewing them.

Perhaps a better choice of words would have been break. I know I need a long break for all sorts of personal reasons related to my health and to my committed relationship.

Some of you have strong views that if you retire, you must stop posting or lurking on the boards and you must never go back to seeing an SP or MP, not even once. Well, the truth is that this approach may not be suited for everyone. Some people might prefer to gradually withdraw from the hobby. Others might take long breaks and come back stronger.

We do not know where our lives lead us. This is what makes life scary and exciting at the same time. There is no universal truth on retiring from the hobby. Some do and come back. Some do and never come back. It all depends on where their lives lead them.

In your "I Bid You All Farewell ........." thread

https://merb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=17048&page=2

post#28 you clearly state:

"I would like to take this energy into my next project of life - writing a movie screenplay."

At this point retirement or any semantic game you wish to play is no longer the issue.Simply the issue becomes are/were you using the boards and the members as unknowing, nonconsenting participants in the aforementionned
movie screenplay project.

The board members have extended you the benefit of the doubt about your agenda.Perhaps the time has come for a few straight answers?

Come on.... Now GG is accused of what??? Using the board to promote his `aforementioned` screen play !!! Who cares? We are all here, in the lounge, talking about stuff. We read and accept what we like and refuse what we don`t like.

I get the feeling most people here are just looking for trouble...
If you can`t find anything interesting to say.. Do like I usually do.... Don`t say anything or find a new SP to review !!! :D
