Are Garth Snow and Islanders owner Charles Wang out of their minds?!?

They've decided to sign an average goalie to a 15-YEAR, 67.5-MIL dollar contract. By the time DiPietro's contract ends, he'll be 42. Ridiculous! Has Garth been sniffing snow?

They better hope the salary cap goes way up over the next few years. Locking up that kind of cash for one player is insane. DiPietro on the other hand made out like a bandit. This is going to throw the entire salary market for goalies out of whack. Unbelievable.

DiPietro's already a dud. The Islanders were once a proud franchise but they've been mired in dirt for years and obviously now they're even deeper on their journey to the center of the earth. Even if DiPietro was not a sieve this would be stupid but given that it's DiPietro it goes beyond stupid and enters the realm of insanity.

Yeah but, Techman, if that's the case, expect DiPietro to be asking to have his contract reopened, à la Terrel Owens .

When I heard this today I honestly thought it was a joke I mean this has to be the stupidest move in the history of professional sports - really!

This below average goalie is now absolutly UNTRADEABLE! What the hell are they thinking??? If they weren't already they are now without a doubt the biggest joke in hockey!

    !
    Maybe not, Spin.

Legendary QB Steve Young once signed a 42-year , 42-MIL contract with the LA Express of the now defunct USFL. His contract expires in 2026. He is reportedly still receiving his annuity

p.s. At least Young was an all-star player. The same cannot be said of DiPietro, however.

Young signed a record 10-year, $40m contract with the Los Angeles Express of the now-defunct United States Football League in 1984. However, the league ceased operations in 1986 after a disastrous move to a fall/winter schedule to compete with the National Football League. Young's contract with the team set forth that Young would be paid one million dollars annually for 42 years, or until 2026. Twenty years after the USFL folded, Young reportedly continues to receive his annuity.
Actually, from the link you posted, it was a ten year contract with the payments stretching out over 42 years. Not quite the same thing.

    Thumbs up

The lunatics are running the asylum on Long Island. I wonder if Mad Mike Millbury had a hand in this? The owner Wang is insane – the story says he was personally involved – why bother with a GM – then again the GM is the back up goalie. Didn’t the NYI learn their lesson from the 10 year $100M contract they gave to Yashin? No wonder Neil Smith wanted no part of this gong show. Sucks to be an Isles fan.
