There's a lot of talk of hotels, but through my searches I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I guess the easiest way to explain it is that I'm look for a Montreal hotel that would be the equivalent of the Park Hyatt or Four Seasons in toronto. I've stayed at the Park Hyatt in Toronto twice, had a beautiful suite, and never had a problem with SPs coming or going. Anyone have any suggestions?

Park Hyatt is a hotel of choice..

Ocean976,

The Park Hyatt is my hotel of choice in Toronto. Both the hotel and location are quite excellent. Yorkville/Annex is a very nice location. Good restaurants and nightlife right on Cumberland Street. Great neighborhood North of the hotel with lots of brick brownhouse with baristers and art galleries. Duke of York Pub with excellent beer and eats during the warmer months. The North tower of that hotel is renovated and has a private 24 hour entrance that bypasses the front desk with hassle free access for guests. 18th floor lounge in the South tower serves excellent Martinis and is one of the few remaining places where you can fire up a stogie in that town and not be ostracized. The room service is par excellance. The chocolate covered strawberries are a favorite of both mine and my guests. The rooms in that tower are excellent with the uprgraded suites featuring spatious all marble baths. They are the largest rooms in the city for luxury class hotels. I like the seating area with the love seats and the wood/wraught iron king size beds are very nice. Fully mirrored marble bath with brass fixtures. The contemporary furniture is more to my liking for the purpose of sexual antics. Louis XiV is artsy but useless.

My recommendation: Boutique hotel..St. Sulpice...Loft suite...

I agree with EBS. The St Sulpice is a very nice hotel, and if you stay there during the winter, the prices are pretty damn good.(if you are from the US). I booked a Deluxe Suite there for about 199 cad,150 us at the time) Use 1stmontrealhotels.com, they usually have great deals.

I like the St Sulpice alot. I prefer the regular suites over the loft rooms as I prefer two separate areas. Loft rooms seem to have a separate jacuzzi and shower, tho. The gas fireplaces, leather chairs, etc make for a "romantic" atmosphere and the right lady completes the fantasy. Proximity to several fine restaurants make this an excellent choice. A $6-$8 taxi ride to the St Catherine's action. Free Internet access.

I also like the St Paul for its "attitude" and bar. Really nice modern rooms with a bit of a colder edge than the St Sulpice. Big bathrooms. Exceedingly friendly staff. Taxi and Internet the same as St Sulpice, but a few more blocks to walk to the restos.

Can't go wrong with either one.

Very cool touch at the St Sulpice --- when you check in, they give you a half-dozen or so "business cards" with your name, the hotel's info, and the dates of your stay. I have found these quite handy when meeting a civilian in Montreal.

late entry with keys?

Do they have 24 hrs free entry? Or key required for elevators after like 9pm ?

Somehow I got more info regarding to hotels from this thread than other "normal" forums...lol

Thanks!

Key entry?

Kafka:

Neither the St Sulpice nor the St Paul have key entry, compared to the new policy at the Vogue -- not staying there anymore.

Last time I was at the St Sulpice, I had a young lady coming by at 3 AM. I called the front desk, said I expected a lady visitor, and (just in case) don't hassle her. "Yes, sir." In all my stays at the SS, no one was ever hassled or refused entry at more reasonable hours. The 3 AM visit was an abberation (and a mistake) for me.

BTW, I got a deal on Expedia for the SS at about $115 USD. If you check around, you will inevitably find one of the boutique hotels at a sale price.

St-Sulpice

I used to work at this hotel. Very nice, but small. Whenever a 'lady' would walk in, it would seem like there was a spotlight put onto her. We'd always have a pretty good idea which 'guest' of ours was seeing her......lol

Not to mislead anyone, i must emphasize the fact that St-Sulpice is not located 'downtown', as the title of the thread suggests. It's located in Old Montreal, close to the Notre-Dame Basilica. It's a pretty lonely and deserted area during the fall-spring season, which is why the room rates drop.

If someone wants to be closer to the downtown area, there are much, much better choices than this hotel. Sure, it's classy and the rooms are gorgeous, but needing to take a cab everytime you want to go downtown is a hassle. Also the fact some ladies might not be comfortable walking into that place, and also the fact some clients might not want the whole hotel staff to know they are Johns.

My two favorites are the Omni (former Four Seasons) and Ritz. Both absolutely first class, in the heart of downtown, close to many great restaurants, and should be no problem for SPs. But Old Montreal has a very different flavor-you might choose the area for its unique ambiance, and I'm sure the hotels recommended there are good too (as well as restaurants, but as said before, much less late night life. Have a great trip!

Just a tip for us miserly old men or scammers (I don't know if someone has mentioned this)...

a lot of the downtown hotels will actually let you use some sort of special rate discount if you lie to them. Business company discounts are good. I always call ahead and ask about ther standard rate, then ask if they have a corporate rate, or a cmpany specific rate, and if they have any other discounts available. They'll almost always take your word of honor that you are part of the company (or if for a specific company say, "I don't have my cards on me...but if you'll call my company 800 # they can confirm"..."that's ok sir".

another bonus is when you see conventions in the lobby. Talk to one of the conventioners and feel around. My friend once got a NAFFA discount ($49 for a downtown suite with a jacuzzi) because they thought he was part of the convention (NAFFA = National Association for Fat Acceptance). Several times I have gotten NRA discounts in the US for insane prices for insane people.

Justajohn, since you worked at a hotel, why don't you give us some money saving tips?

E B Samaritano and everybody was right...Hotel Le Saint Sulpice is really great!

They even have a real fireplace!(<- Best memories happened around that place...)

I think the quality of the hotel can be proven by the fact that there was a TV/movie crew filming in the lobby at one time...you don't see those happening at hilton/sheraton a lot...

If they have a jacuzzi....that will be perfect.

btw, its only 20min-25min fast walking back to downtown...and its good for your health.

In the style of MERB I think we should have a ranking system for SP friendly Hotel too lol.

Look(Lobby, general location): 4/5 (25min walk to downtown, otherwise 5!)
Body(Room, interior): 4.5/5 (5 if jacuzzi)
Service(room service, response for your request...etc) : 4/5(no hot food after 11pm)
Repeat : Yes

St Sulpice

Glad you enjoyed the hotel, Kafka.

As for the walk, what the f***? Who cares? A taxi ride is $6 to downtown. The walk is nice in good weather and sucks in bad weather. Same can be said for anyplace in the world. Get over complaining about Montreal in February. Don't like cold weather? Head south. And here's a novel concept -- call for a taxi in bad weather! You can do that -- you really can!!

St Sulpice is a very special, classy hotel that won't break your budget. All the SPs that I have seen there have enjoyed the rooms and the bathrooms (yes, you can fit two in one of their bathtubs).

Wanna be downtown in a big hotel that could be in any city in the world? Then stay there. Wanna stay someplace special? Stay at the St Sulpice. And, no, I don't work for them. It's a cool place that I have always enjoyed staying at that I would like to see prosper.

'Nuff said.

First of all, peace! StripperLover and EagerBeaver I will definitely NOT try to walk that distance(about 25 min for me) in Feb with snow and wind and all those Canadian harsh winter.... =P

The best time to stay in that hotel is probably end of summer high season and before December/Heavy snowing....and the time in March to May?

traveler0099 said it right, if you want to feel like you're living in "Montreal", try to stay in those Bontique Hotel even if you're doing business travel...it kinda sucks not to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Old Montreal...

btw traveler0099 how the heck I can get a room with bathtub? Random Loft Suite? Or HAVE to be Deluxe suite? Or just by request??? From my recent stay theres only a shower...even tho the fireplace is EXCELLENT...

Just want to add that during the winter, the old port / old montreal areas are not that active at all. Many of the attractions, bars, and such only operate on a summer (April to October) type schedual. As a result, having a hotel room in that area can be a bit of a lonely event.

However, that hotel is REALLY nice, and more than worth the money if you want a special experience.

Kafka:

I am surprised that you DID NOT have a tub. I guess request one when you book. I had a regular loft last time.

Now think of a hot bubble bath with the lady of your choice and then a sweet session in front of the fireplace .... aaaah !!!

No bubble soap????

Damn !!!

Tell room service to get you some.

Although if you don't have a tub, bubble bath will do you no good.

The chicks DO love the fireplace ...

Hotels in Old Mtl

I also wasn't aware the rooms at St-Sulpice had bathtubs. However, it's been nearly 5 years that i hadn't worked there.

Too bad that the fireplaces aren't real ones, though......it's also disappointing that the rooms are only reasonably priced at this time of the year. A time when the surroundings (Old Mtl) are quite dead.

Another great alternative in Old Mtl would be 'Le Nelligan'. It's absolutely a fantastic boutique-style hotel, which is located in the same area as the St-Sulpice. I've never heard a bad word about it, except maybe for the price. Other option? Le St-James. That's the same hotel where the Stones stayed at last January. Mick Jagger had the King's suite which also consisted of a baby grand piano inside the room. Every room in the hotel has plasma television sets. Again, the main drawback is the price, but if your boss or company is paying for it...go for it!
