In town now. Looking to rent DVDs to pass the time between SP visits.

Any place that will rent to non-residents?

Do you have a Blockbuster Video membership? They have locations in Montreal.

I would assume your US membership would work in Canada.

Yes, but my Blockbuster card is for back in the States.

Are they going to rent to me here?

i.e. In case I run off with it.

I don't know if there are any downtown but there are some self serve video rental machines around. There are a couple in Verdun. I've never used one but I think it charges directly to your credit card. I would also assume that blockbuster would rent to you with your American membership card if you paid with a credit card. That way, if you fail to return the dvd they could just bill you for it. It's worth a try.

I finally heard from Blockbuster US customer service. Unfortunately, US membership cards are not valid in Blockbuster Canada stores. So I have no idea why the opposite is true, in Joe_'s case.

Oh well, maybe someday, Canada will get Redbox.

Sounds like there is something similar to that in Verdun, according to Techman.

That's pretty much the same thing. Next time I pass by the area I'll look to see if they have a website to check out other locations around town. Can't be only in Verdun, they must be downtown also somewhere. If I find out anything, I'll post it here for future reference.

OK, I made a couple of calls and the place is called Videoself. There is a website, videoself.ca, and this is the list of downtown locations...

http://www.videoself.ca/php/location.php?s=17&c=19

there is one on St-Marc as well as one on Bishop, pretty much in the center of downtown. Check the website for how it works. Hope that helps.

Edit: the website for rental info is filmonline.ca

I went to the Videoself on Bishop. To rent from the machine, you need a membership card, and in order to get that, residency is required.

Now, with Redbox in the USA, only a credit card is required. It does ask you for the zip code of the credit card; I don't remember if a Canadian postal code can be entered. Redbox automatically charges you $1/day, and if you keep it past 25 days, the DVD is yours. That's how they handle losses.

It's just as well. There is plenty of stuff to do in Montreal. My hotel just happens to have a DVD player in the room, so just wanted to try that out.

I tried using my credit card a few times in the US. I seem to remember that when I used it to fill up my car with gas, I was asked for my zip code. I told them that I didn't have one since I lived in Canada. I think that they entered either their own zip code or a bunch of '1' and I was able to purchase my gas. I'm not sure if it will work in the Redbox case.
