Hey Guys,

I will be in Montreal this weekend to partake of the benefits of the city.

Can you guys give me a couple of suggestions with regards to exchanging American Dollars into Canadian ones? Addresses...

Also, how is the exchange rate looking these past few days? I checked and it was rather low:mad:

Thanks guys,

A.K.

Eager,

Unless I misunderstood your remarks regarding bad reviews, I would have to disagree. Repeated reviews (good or bad) only serve to corrborate previous reviews...I see this as good. Again, maybe I misunderstood your comment.

I sympathize with EB's grievance. Things can be a little messy. But more info is good, even if it requires hitting the search button (however, some people like me have ten broken fingers and can't click search).

As for the original question...

In my opinion the best place to exchange is the Casino Montreal. They have no surcharge (unlike the exchangers on St C), and their spread is a bank's spread because it is done by a bank (bank spreads are the best). The only danger is that you will gamble while in the place, then you'll wish you had went to the exchangers on St C. My routine is to drive up to the valet parking, which is free and quicker than the self or bus transit parking, and drop off my car there. I exchange, and then tell the valet I lost all my money to the casino ($0 tip, the cheap bastard I am). Most of them understand.

Bank spreads are about $1.50 Ca, meaning if the currency is going for 132 Ca for 100 Am on the FOREX, you will get about $130.50 Ca for 100 American. Don't let the St. C boards fool you. They seem to have better spreads than the bank spreads (about .75 to 1.25 cents better), but they add on a fee, usually $2.50. But this means that if you exchange about $1000 Am or more, you would be best off exchanging it all with one St. C exchanger in one transaction. Can anyone with better info recommend a better spread?

The problem with many banks is that they will require an account or else they'll charge a fee, although I've found a few that will exchange for the spread only. Also banks close early, whereas CM is open 24 hr.

If you are really really stuck, then try the ATM, but you will be hit with fees usually.

If you insist on exchanging money in a strip club (stupid), my observation is that the best strip club exchange is at Club Downtown, usually about 10 whole points better than other strip clubs.

If you really wanna be an ass...some restaurants in DT Montreal will exchange money and they won't be up to par on the info. Most people roughly think that the exchange is 1.5 to 1 (historically correct). If I eat, I always ask the waiter if I can exchange money, and a few will tell me they tell me that they give 1.5 to 1 (or some out of date above market figure). If so, and you can live with yourself, exchange the maximum amount. I once exchanged 500 American into 750 Canadian, while the going rate was 137 FOREX (meaning I got overpaid about 65 Ca). Most limit to about 20-100 or so dollars. I once even exchanged at the burger king on St C and the stupid manager gave me 25 Ca for 10 Am, minus the order.

Finally...DO NOT EXCHANGE at the duty free store; they are a rip off. On my first visit to Montreal, before I knew anything, my friend told me this was the best place to exchange because they won't tax your exchange...that advice was so wrong and stupid I want to kill that guy.

For current exchange rate...and, yes, it ain't too pretty...

Canada
High Canadian Dollar

It's now back up to being close to 76 cents US. It went below the 75 cents mark briefly, yesterday.

Rumour has it that it might be closer to the 80 cents US range by the new year. I was wondering if this meant the possibility that travelling HDH's might lower their rates locally (to maybe $400), yet raise their rates when travelling to the US since the money they will make in the US won't be worth as much by the time they return home....?? If it continues to climb, will it be still worthwile for them to travel to the States?

Just wondering....

John, interesting...I only thought of it as one way...I'm hoping the Canadian currency gets weaker, while you hope it gets stronger. In my narrow mindedness, I forgot that Canadians go into America, too, or that you guys have other stakes involved. May the best man/currency win.

As far as Candian girls going touring into the US. Hell yes, they will go. The American sex market bears a significantly higher price than in Montreal and is way more profitable, regardless of the cuurency conversion. $250 American/hour for an established incall is considered cheap in NY (not counting streetwalkers, asian massage parlors, or rancid quick time houses; an example of an established incall is Julies at http://www.julienyc.com ). Independents charge more.

We American johns are SUCKERS.

I got emails from a couple of friends who wanted me to correct something in the above post...

If you are mathematically minded, you may have caught it...

When I mentioned 1.5 TO 1, or $X TO $X, I really meant 1.5 FOR 1. The difference being that if you exchange 100 American dollars...

1.5 to 1 = $250 Ca

1.5 for 1 = $150 Ca

If anyone got confused or ripped off, please email all complaints to Fred Zed. He wil refund you any money that you may have lost.

Canadian dollar rising again

Bad news for our visiting american friends: the Canadian dollar continued to rise today and nearly hit the 77 cents US mark.

The exchange rate today was: $1.3034 CAN

At it's current pace, it will hit the 80 cents US mark by December. Some so-called experts had stated this would never happen until 2004.

Will this have a huge or minimal impact on the local Mtl sex trade?

Here is a link to a good currency calculator, along with recent exchange rates:

Now ain't that fucked up. I remember thinking, "what! 143 for 100, that's a fuckin' rip off!". Boy, $143 for 100 sounds good right now.

However, I don't think this is a case of the American Dollar being weak, rather, it is the Canadian dollar being comparatively strong. The American dollar is smashing the Mexican Peso, it's cracked 11 Pesos for $1 American. Soon, I think the Canadian versus the American currency will normalize. The US economy is starting to normalize with the jobless rate improving and our fed bank is keeping interest rates steady. Soon, Quebec will be the 51st state.

And don't forget, as some new travelers may not know, you have to subtract about $1.50-2.00 from the given rate to get the final excahnged amount. So if you exchange 100, don't be shocked when the guy only hands you $128 (!!that's really fucked!!). And to really shove it up our asses, if you try to exchange it back (as frequently happens in the Casino), you'll get hit with a back end spread, meaning you'll only get back 96 for your 100.

Ok I should shut up, I was wrong. I guess I am a spoiled American who wants his 1.5 crepes for only 1 pancake.

But it's hard to feel good about getting $128 ca...

I'll just sit here and pout for a little bit.

USD v CAD.

Went Wens Nov 12, changed money in Plattsburgh, got 1.30 CAD for one US. Many LDH ladies, the Bartenders,Hotels, Store owners are complaining about the huge drop in bussiness, they feel its because of the weak USD, also read a news paper, stating that Canada will loose 450,000 mmanufactoring jobs early 2004, with our stock market rebound maybe things may look better, exchange wise in the spring.
