I would like to take time and drive from Buffalo to Toronto then to Montreal.

I like to take a smaller road than 401 from Toronto to Montreal.

Anybody knows of a good highway that leads directly from Toronto to Montreal other than 401 ?

There is no alternate "direct" route. The 401 from Toronto to Montreal will take you 5 hours. Any other way will take you close to 10 hours, or more. If time is not a factor I believe you could follow Lakeshore blvd (this is King's highway I believe -- the road they used before they built the 401) all the way to Gananoque and then take back roads all the way to the 20 (in QC)... This road has traffic lights in every little town.. Alternately, I have no idea why anyone would do this (especially in the winter) but you could take 404 north from Toronto, to highway 11 North, then go through the Huntsville are and take highway 60 East to Ottawa -- and then 40 East to Montreal...

The 401 sucks but there is no better/faster way my friend...

Remind me not to carpool with you.

Usually when you,re in Ontario for a while, you want to get to Montreal as fast as you can..!!:D

Stick with the 401 and enjoy Montreal for a few more hours..!!

I once took Coach Canada from Toronto to Montreal and back.

My only complaint about the 401 was that it was a very, very boring highway with few sights to see along the way. I was wondering how the driver kept awake.

The question should be "Is there any alternate road..."

The answer is yes. You can take a bunch of two lane black top roads that will lengthen your drive. Pick a few small towns or lakes (Rideau lake for example) you want to see and make a a two day trek with overnight stop. You could travel through the hills of the Canadian shield (laurentians) or you could cross into NY state at Kingston and come into Quebec, Canada near Cazaville & Trout River and then into Montreal by the Mercier or Champlain bridge.

US 20 highway from Buffalo to Montreal ?

Hello everybody,

Anybody ever took the US 20 highway from Buffalo to upstate New York then cross border and hop into Montreal ?

Criteria are:

1. restaurants along the way

2. Nice road, not too many potholes

3. hotels along the highway.

Inputs much appreciated.

Esco,

To answer your question -- I agree with Jame's Bond's quote above... This is the main reason it sucks... Also, compared to other roads you have a disproportionate number of 18-wheelers on the 401, heavy traffic -- and then when you can get going then there's too many speed traps. Like I said, even with all the downsides, it's still, by far , the best, fastest, most direct way -- but that doesn't mean it can't still suck! Some people prefer a little scenery!!
