This is just my own little tribute to some fellow climbers who made their final ascent on Mt Hood. We all will check out of this world eventually and when it’s your time, what better way to go than doing the thing you love.

Some people will say they were crazy for going up and got what was coming, some will say it was a freak accident. I say it is just an accepted risk we take.

Goodbye brothers, see you on the summit.

If only I knew...
It's always sad when somebody goes missing or dies but, on occasions like climbers and other adventurers, they themself put their life on the line just for the fun of it.
When they engage in such activities, they know perfectly what kind of trouble they might get into.
What I find even more sad is the rescuers who goes to find them and might also die, just in order to assist peoples who decided in their own free will to do something dangerous. Who know, a rescuer that dies today saving an advanturer might have been the one able to save a real accident victim who didn't look for trouble tomorrow.
All useless and avoidable death and suffering.

There's nothing bad about the activity itself. I'm a scuba diver and enjoy it. It's the unnecessary risk taking I don't approve.
Somebody can be best equipped and trained, the more extreme you go, the more extreme the risk is. When somebody's action start to risk involving somebody else, that's where, in my opinion, it becomes useless and that's where I decide when to stop.
I scuba dive but will never go cave or wreck-penetration diving because of this: i don't want somebody else to get in trouble because of me. On open-water, there isn't much that can happen who would prompt a rescue. Wreck and cave diving can cause lots of problems requiring dangerous rescue.

If I'd be rock climbing, I'd be stuck at the newbie level forever! :D Not that it doesn't interest me...
I like to be able to quantify the risk I'm taking so, when the risk gets too high, I'm out. For example, I'd like to skydive because you have 2 chances (main plus reserve) but I would never bungee jump (just 1 band)!
I like scuba but would never go alone, same reason.

Risk

For those that think it’s not worth the risk, you take a greater risk every time you get in your car and drive somewhere. On average more than 50,000 people die in North America each year in car accidents. That means during their two-day climb more than 270 people died in cars. Now unless you only drive to and from work and the grocery store you are taking unnecessary risk. I would argue that it is more dangerous to drive to the climb/dive/etc than to actually do it. People basically don’t pay attention to vehicle accidents because driving is part of our daily lives and we are numb to it, where as recreational accidents are more infrequent and therefore considered more spectacular or more news worthy. Most things in life are a risk, either live life to the fullest or cower in your house afraid of what might happen. In the end we all die. When your time comes will you be able to tell yourself you had a fun fulfilling life or did you just exist.

NY, I agree 100% with you if we only look at partial numbers but, if you look at the full picture, how many peoples drove a car during those 2 days and how many were climbing? The accident rate for the climbers are easily way higher than for peoples driving. This is why if you mention to your insurance company you are climbing, your life/health insurance cost will likely go up. Mine went up when I mentionned scuba.

But let's go back to topic: Goodby to fellow climbers. At least, they left doing what they liked. Doesn't make it less tragic but it's somewhat comforting. :(
