... not the LE type ...

I'm talking about the most famous three-member band of all time ... Sting, Stewart Copeland, & Andy Summers ... The Police !!!

Have you heard the rumours that The Police may get together for a tour in 2007 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of the first Police single "Roxanne", a love song to a prostitute.

This is great news!!!

I like the Police too but most famous 3 member band of all time? Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience might disagree. Won't even think about Crosby Stills and Nash.

The GRAMMYs

It’s official !!!

After weeks of speculation, it has been confirmed that the Police will reunite and perform together to open the 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast on Sunday, February 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The group has not performed live since its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The GRAMMY appearance is expected to kick off a year's worth of reunion shows throughout the world. Last week, a Vancouver radio station reported that Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers were rehearsing at the city's Lions Gate Studios.

CSN&Y would make the case for a 4-member band, but without Neil Young, CSN was/is/will always be nothing that special...

Crazy Horse (Neil's other band -- Billy Talbot, Frank Sampedro, Ralph Molina) DEFINED garage rock for a generation and inspired the entire grunge movement. They put CSN to shame anyday IMHO...

Love the Police too... Only downside to that tour is that you can bet the tickets will be $250+ for decent seats...

Most famous is irrelevant. The Spice Girls were famous...not very good though. What matters is the quality of the music and the Police were never one of my favorite groups. Just thinking of Sting yelling out 'Roxanne!' make me think of a cat in heat. I'll take Cream anyday over them.

I agree here.Popularity has nothing to do with greatness. The back street boys were popular despite the fact that they were a joke.
Cream,Jimi Hendrix Experiance and Rush are much better IMHO,so were ELP.

A Classic

I just came across this video.

This is a Live Performance by the Police that was taped on February 24, 1979 at the University of Hertfordshire ("Hatfield Polytechnics") in the UK. It was the first time "Message in a Bottle" was ever played in public and about 8 months before the album it appeared on, Reggatta de Blanc, was released.

I wasn't even born when Sting was red-hot; nevertheless, I love his music.

I fell in love with his music when I heard "Shape of My Heart" at the end of "The Professional" (during the end credits). "Roxanne" is also one of the few I really liked.

Were we watching the same show last night? I found their performance very ordinary and nowhere near to living up to all the hype. At least they'll have a few shows under their belt before hitting Montreal to shake the cobwebs out. I admit that I'm not exactly a great fan of theirs but I expected more from them last night.

You are being kind. The song Roxanne was pathetic, sting Hasn't got the voice to hit the high pitch that it requires and the rendition was dull.
Has far as old foggies go I'll take the rolling stones any day

The Police reunite for 30th anniversary world tour
By Tangi Quemener

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Rock group The Police announced an international reunion tour to mark their 30th anniversary, confirming one of the music world's most eagerly anticipated comebacks.
The three-member band -- British frontman Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland -- will kick off their tour in Vancouver on May 28, playing across North American before heading to Europe later in the year.
Additional dates in Mexico, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand are expected to be added to the schedule.
The Police, one of the biggest groups of the late 1970s and early 1980s thanks to songs such as "Roxanne" and "Every Breath You Take" had performed at Sunday's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Sting, speaking after a rehearsal session to announce the comeback at Hollywood's famous Whisky A Go-Go club on Monday, said the idea of a reunion came to him late last year.
"I woke up one morning about three months ago and it was like a light bulb went off in my head 'I'm going to call Andy and Stewart,'" Sting said.
"What's happening is sort of very healing."
News of the tour will give the group's millions of fans a chance to pay homage to the band, who never formally split up but rather drifted apart after their successful 1983 album "Synchronicity."
While Sting acknowledged there had been differences between the band when they went their separate ways, the three had remained friends. "The nature of the arguments were all about music -- and hairstyles," Sting said.
Copeland, who was once reported to have come to blows with Sting over the front-man's high profile and control of the group, added: "We refer to Sting as our dear leader."
Sting meanwhile said the band's concerts would be stripped down to the basics, in keeping with the raw energy of the group's early years.
"It's going to be three guys on stage, that's all," he said. "The show is going to be simple but spectacular."
The band's comeback had been anticipated after Sting revealed in an interview last month that he and his former bandmates had been "talking about" doing something to mark the anniversary.
Summers, 64, told Billboard magazine last month the manner of The Police's demise had nagged away at them since their last album, after which they performed together on only a handful of occasions.
"The more rational approach would have been, 'OK, Sting, go make a solo record, and let's get back together in two or three years,'" he said.
"I regret we never paid it off with a last tour."
Sting and Copeland formed The Police in 1977, desperate to be a part of the the burgeoning London punk scene, Summers joining later as guitarist.
The Police would become famous however for a unique style, which fused elements of pop, punk and reggae and delivered a string of hits.
Their debut 1978 album "Outlandos D'Amour", featuring "Roxanne" and "Can't Stand Losing You", marked their arrival and they followed it up in 1979 with "Regatta de Blanc", notable for "Walking on the Moon" and "Message in a Bottle", the band's first number-ones.
The band's third album, the hastily recorded "Zenyatta Mondatta", provided one of group's best-known singles, "Don't Stand So Close To Me", and helped the group gain a foothold in the all-important US market.
A fourth album, "Ghost in the Machine" followed in 1981, but it was "Synchronicity" that was to see the band at their zenith.
Although it missed out on a Grammy against Michael Jackson's "Thriller" for Album of the Year, the number-one single "Every Breath You Take" won Song of the Year, beating out "Billie Jean."

I have to agree with you. Very ordinary performance. I thought they'd keep them for the last half of the show and get them to play a 10 minute medley of their best songs. Apart from that, i found the Grammys to be an excellent show, much to my surprise. I haven't really been watching the Grammys much in the past years since i'm not a great fan of today's music. However, last night's musical acts were very good. I especially liked Carrie Underwood's performances when she performed a few songs as a tribute to the late Bob Wills & to Don Henley. Some group i hadn't heard about also performed some of the Eagles' songs such as Hotel California & Life in the Fast Lane, which Underwood also sang with. I really was touched by Underwood's version of "Desperado", one of my all-time favorite ballads. This young lady will be a huge star one day. Tony Romo is one lucky dude!

I also liked the Dixie Chicks' performance and also the fact they won many awards. This was very touching considering they got blacklisted by the US music fans & radio stations after publicly stating they were ashamed that George Bush also hailed from Texas a few years ago. None was more happier of their win as Album of the Year than Don Henley, also from Texas & a huge Dixie Chicks booster (and anti-Bush/anti-war crusader). I liked the Red, Hot Chilly Peppers' performance, Beyonce & Christina showing us their pipes, Prince showing up unexpectedly to present an award, James Blunt singing his hit, and heck, even Justin Timberlake was great!! He sang a duet with an amateur who had won a contest voted in by the fans throughout the broadcast. I was very impressed with her performance also, which musn't have been easy considering she only had about a minute to go on stage after finding it she had won. Just the look on her face was priceless when she found out she had won, sitting with the two other contestants.

All in all...it was a great show and i even decided to record the show (on dvd) when it re-played 3 hours later on the west coast feed on my dish.

Hello all,

I had the great and magnificent pleasure of seeing them in Foxboro, Massachusetts just after the "Synchronicity" album came out. It was legendary.

Sigh,
