Dancers in Vancouver decided to do a fund raiser after one of their own was diagnosed with breast cancer. (She has since died.) Recently, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation refused their donation of about $6000 saying that this money was too contraversial.

I would understand better if stripping was illegal...

Exotic dancers' 'stigma' too much for charity

*Strippers' money not good enough*

$6000 is a lot of money to refuse from a group of women who earned it legally. More over strippers who survive breast cancer cannot go back to their previous line of work... To be so choosy you would think that they do not really need the money... though I do not really believe that either.

I can rant for a long time on this one but I woud like to hear what some others think...

It's not the first time something like this has happened. Many years ago, Supersexe used to hold a month long fundraiser for charity at Christmas time. It culminated in a party at the club and all the dancers donated the money they made that night to the cause. It was quite an event and for a few years it was hosted by Don McGowan from what was then Pulse news on CFCF12 and it was always covered by the news show. The money raised from this was offered to various charities and was refused by all of them except for the Montreal Childrens Hospital. The fundraiser became known as Tits for Tots and it raised many thousands of dollars over the years. Many of the dancers would go to the hospital to bring all the stuffed toys that customers had bought for them over the year to give to the patients and I'm sure they have never been forgotten by the kids they helped.

One of the main organizers of this was a stripper named Fonda Peters who went on to become an award winning film maker under her real name of Lindalee Tracy. She died from breast cancer this past year and I feel that it's a damn shame that money raised by anyone should be refused because some of their regular sponsors don't want to be associated with dancers or their money.

Disgusting attitude

I'm amazed by the complete disrespect the BCSC has shown for these strippers and all strippers. How can a group of people today be discriminate against based on their legal occupation - this is really as bad as saying we can't take you're money because you're black or jewish - when are people going to get over this? I am personally disgusted by their attitude having lost my mother to this terrible disease. They should not care for the source if its legal.

Ronnie - according to the articles I read, its not the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation that refused but the Breast Cancer Society of Canada, a separate organization. You can email their executive director, Rany Xanthopoulo at [email protected] as I will.

I do hope the group donates the money to the CBCF.

They should also refuse money from politicians - much dirtier than money from strippers!

Thank you for the clarification. I guess I was too upset to think/write clearly when I made my summary of the two articles.
