I was just watching the ABC World News and they showed Chris Simon's stick swinging hit on Ryan Hollweg. I hope the Nassau County District attorney brings charges against him. This behavior is totally unacceptable. I thought all the players would have learned something from the Donald Brashear episode some years back. But I guess some players just never learn.

He got suspended by the NHL (and rightfully so)!!

If I can say a very, very minor thing in his defense, sometimes in sports you let emotion and passion get the better of you and you dont realize doing things you regret doing later.

Now thats absolutely no excuse for what he did and he should pay!!

But, I dont think it was 100% intent on his part

It's no different than what Marty McSorley did to Donald Brashear a few years ago, and Simon should get the same punishment as McSorley did.

Brashear's injuries were more due to the fact that he smacked the back of his head on the ice, because he stupidly had his helmet's chinstrap undone, than they were from the cheap shot he received. Simon deserves a heavier suspension than McSorley received. A couple of inches lower and the NHL could have had a funeral before the playoffs. There's no room for this kind of crap in hockey but he will probably get off easy because there was no injury involved. He should be made an example of and banned for a year at the very least.

McSorley Suspension

McSorley's 23 game suspension was I believe the longest in NHL history, although Todd Bertuzzi's would have been longer except for the NHL lockout.

But there's has to be a borderline, you cant just let NHL players get way with decapitating players, I'm sorry there's has to be a limit!!

Considering that Moore, the player Bertuzzi attacked, will never play the game again, I feel that Bertuzzi should have banned for life.

Where do you draw the line, many a hits in the NHL were worse than Bertuzzi and none of them resulted in lifelong injuries.

That was a brutal incident and Simon should pay a heavy price. I am not for outside agencies charging with assault - a la Bertuzzi, McSorley. A lengthy suspension unpaid is more appropriate.

Both of Techman's posts are right on the money. The Simon and Bertuzzi cases are two of the worst in the history of hockey. The extent of the injury should not be the determining factor in meting out justice - it should be the intent of the perpetrator and the potential consequences of his act.

Simon acted quickly and obviously without considerable premeditation (since it was in the heat of the moment) but even without pause for thought he was well aware that he could have killed his victim with this type of action.

As for Bertuzzi, he planned his cowardly attack for some time - why didn't big tough Todd simply fight Moore like a man? The McSorley incident wasn't as bad because, although it was premeditated, it was clear that Marty didn't expect what resulted to occur - he was just trying to goad Brash into a fight but he miscalculated slightly and Brash's brilliance with the chinstrap ended the story.

In general hockey violence is relatively mild within the accepted context of the North American version of the game, but when players step totally out of bounds as Bertuzzi and Simon did there should be legal repercussions. Both of these cases were violent assault.

I draw the line here: when a player is injured due to a deliberate act of violence by another player, the offending player should serve a suspension not less than the number of games that the injured player misses. In cases where the injured player only misses a couple of games, or none at all as in the current case, the length of suspension should be decided by the NHL disciplinary committee. Maybe then players will think before they act.

PS: by deliberate act, I am not including body checks which lead to injuries, except when hitting into the boards from behind. I am mainly talking about blatant attacks such as happened this week and in the Bertuzzi and McSorley cases.

He should have gotten a lifetime ban.

The violence on the ice has to end.

I don't consider it to be enough but it's a good start. Let's wait and see what the next idiot gets because, sooner of later, there will be another incident.

If only I knew...
I agree with M_B. Plus criminal charges should get pressed. Kids see this and some take it as an example of strenght. My 12yo nephew is playing hockey and it's already getting rough at that age, even with the rules.
They must be shown these acts are not acceptable.
