Je me demande bien quoi faire...

Déjà que la semaine derniere, j'ai vécu un évènement bien traumatisant. J'ai eu la mauvaise idée de faire confiance à un client régulier qui m'a finalement volé. Je sais...bravo la naiveté!

Je me questionne....

What to do if attacked

Sorry to read this thread but the issue raised is significant.

1.)Immediately go to a hospital. A medical report will support any police report that you make and the mindset of the police is that if they are taking such a report at a hospital it is a lot more serious then if they are taking it at a home or apartment. Also you will have witnesses.

2.) On your way to the hospital write down everything you remember about the incident. The longer you wait the greater the chances of forgetting an
important element. If you cannot write repeat the facts over and over to
improve your memory.

3.) Get pictures taken of the injuries ASAP.

4.) At the hospital let the doctors do a complete set of tests - what to you
may seem unimportant may be problematic down the road.

5.) Follow the doctors advice and take the time to heal completely.

All the best.

Quick translation

Quick translation of Samy's post about getting mugged:

I often wonder if the police are really there for me, for my safety. I was mugged last night and it seemed that the police didn't take me seriously.

However my head and face were cut and one eye was quite messed up to say nothing of the money, credit card (etc.) that were stolen from me...When I called this morning to check on my report, none had been filed! I really wonder what to do...

Already last week I lived through something really traumatic. I had the bad idea of trusting a regular client who in the end ripped me off. I know...bravo, it's naive.

I ask myself...Was I made to be abused like that?

What should I do when I was mugged like that if no one takes me seriously?

xx Samy

Self Defense

Samy,

I am very sorry to hear about what happened to you. There is a thread on this Board about self defense by ladies which you may find helpful:

https://merb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=10982&highlight=mace

I once met a Montreal indy SP who told me she always carried pepper spray with her, and she used it at one time to ward off an attack. She was certain she saved herself from being raped. I don`t know if it would have helped you in your situation, but sometimes the best way to deal with these situations is thwart them before they get started.

I hope they catch the culprit involved in this unfortunate incident.

Thanks Captain for translating!

Samy:

I am so sorry to read your stories, totally unimaginable. Thank God either instance was not more serious. I will hope, pray,….. Godspeed on your swift recovery, both physically and mentally.

Please take some time to remind yourself how much you are loved and respected by most everyone on this board. Perhaps you can find some comfort during this holiday season. Surround yourself with those that appreciate the amazing lady that you are and will continue to be. As difficult as it may seem right now, try not to feel like a victim, as unfortunately bad things happen to good people all the time.

One last note and if I remember correctly, I believe you have a birthday upcoming, very soon. Again, God bless you Samy and many more!

Pepper is only for steaks in Canada

I'm unhappy with this, but pepper spray is illegal to posses in Canada. If you do use it to defend yourself, expect to be criminally charged.

http://canadagazette.gc.ca/partI/1998/19980620/html/regle1-e.html

Prohibited weapons include: "Any device that is designed to injure, immobilize or otherwise incapacitate a person by the discharge of any liquid, spray, powder, gas or other substance that is capable of injuring, immobilizing or otherwise incapacitating a person. [...] nunchaku [...] shuriken [...] "manrikigusari" or "kusari" [...] finger ring that has one or more blades [...] . Any device that is designed to be capable of injuring, immobilizing or incapacitating a person or an animal by discharging an electrical charge [...] belt containing a blade [...] Brass Knuckles [...] etc. etc.

Not correct. It's illegal to use on humans. It is not illegal to possess or be used for animal control (bears). Read the law that you cite.

Thus it can be purchased. I would argue that if it is used in self defense against someone trying to rape you, it is in fact being used on an animal, and therefore its use is legal under the cited law.

And as a practical matter, I doubt the maced rapist will go to the cops and file a complaint, so it is probably de facto legal to use in such situations.

Well said, although are you talking about arguing this on the boards, or in court? Would this sort of reasoning really work in court?

Probably not, but it's fun to argue the position on MERB.
What I thought, but indeed it's a very valid argument in my eyes... :)

One thing that is not clear to me is whether this attack (not the theft) was from a client or some random animal on the street who wanted Samy's purse?

If only I knew...
The bear repellent sold in sporting stores is a less powerful version of what's used by cops. The type used by cops is illegal for civilian use.

Somebody using the sporting variety on a person could face criminal charges.

It's too bad there doesn't exist an "asshole repelant", for guys using the gentleness and trusting attitude of ladies like Samy to rip them off! What a shame!

And what about cops... My guess is they get bored at what they see day after day. They end up treating people like numbers, sometimes totally disconnected from the reality, not realizing (or not caring about) the impact their actions (or inactions) have on people. They should be "humanized".

Samy, you already know you have all my support.

Sorry, but I was correct. I was trying to keep is simple for the purposes of posting, but I guess I'll need to be more specific.

Small pepper spray cans that can be concealed in a handbag are presumed to be meant against humans. They are illegal to posses.

Only large pepper spray cans (meant against bears or dogs) are legal to posses.

However, if you are caught with even a large can in downtown Montreal you will need to provide justification (good luck, unless you have a good excuse). Either way, if you use them, you will very probably be brought up on charges. I have read caselaw directly on point (good news: it did result in an acquital). But it does prove that even in a clear case of self defence, prosecutors in Montreal will charge you.

So the bottom line is, in Canada, it's not at all like the USA. You cannot carry such devices.

Hello Kepler,

Presuming you are right about the law and the consequnces of carrying the pepper spray, you are a bit off about the identifying bottom line. If I understand what is going on...there was a rip off against our outstanding favorite, Miss Samantha. In any case, such a situation could easily turn into something worse. A person who would do this might do more. Whoever this happens to the bottom line is it's better to have some sort of ready defense and face the consequences for it than to face a personal attack at any level. In the US this would probably be commuted as a case of justifiable self-defense. In Canada, I can't see how there would be more than a token punishment. But I don't know the character of Canadian courts. Better safer than sorrier.

Samy, everyone will understand if you get business done up front. You are just too wonderful for anything to take away from the beautiful person you are...KISSES!

Protect yourselves ladies...whatever the law,

Korbel

Whoever mentionned in this thread that a 90lbs granny could be as deadly as a 200-pounder, thanks. I like that image. I'm no granny, but I love the idea of me kicking some guy's butt à-la-Kung-Fu-movie...

Self defense class is probably the best defense. That's why I was writing.

LOL!! It's not about kung-fu moves, but I like the image too! :D
It' not about brute force but intelligent use of human's weak points:
  • A knee cap take about 15 pounds to break by a direct frontal blow. Sideways takes even less. Even a granny can do that!
  • A blow to both ears with open hands can blow an agressor's eardrums and render him unable to stand-up. That's a feasable blow if the guy is behing you. Or if he's facing you, you do as if you agree to kiss him while holding his head and give him all you got!
  • A "karate-type" blow to the Adam's apple will get most guys down permanently and doesn't require much force. You can first aim for the eyes, with one hand, so the agressor lift his head and, once the neck is exposed...
And there's many more like that.

This is pathetically sad.

One of the street pimps in Montreal during the early 1980's was a world kick-boxing champion who had a history of violence going back to his pre-teen days? You really think what you posted would work against such an individual or against even an average street fighter?

About 8 years ago a seventeen year old kid almost took out a biker in a streetfight - made the front pages of the JDM a few days running. You think a women would stand a chance against such people?

You are forgetting some basics.Gym or training speed is nowhere near the speed with which a street fighter or mugger acts or re-acts.The experience fighting other street fighters has developed their reflexes to the point where their vulnerable points are protected while they attack the victim at the victims most vulnerable point.

A seasoned street fighter or mugger can recognize if the potential victim is right handed or left handed.Just by looking at your hands and face they can tell if you are a fighter or not.Even in a straight-up fight they will position themselves in a way to neutralize your strength.

I repeat.Any ladies reading the post quoted above or similar please ignore for your own safety.

Some more handy ideas ...

metoo4 said:
And there's many more like that.

I guess you can call this "Streetfighting 101" :

1) Instead of a knife a key ring makes a convenient weapon. You do need to have at least 3 or 4 keys to make this work, though. Hold the key ring in you palm and let one key fall out between each of your fingers, then make a fist. The target to go for is the guys eyes, either jabbing or slashing depending on whether you're approached from behind or head on.

2) For a forward-facing attack, pick up one foot and scrape the inside of the sole of your shoe down the guys shin. It sounds silly but it's so excruciatingly painful it will distract him for the split-second that it takes you to make your next move ... either running or something like the eardrum-pop mentioned above.

3) Go for the solar plexus ... what's that?

It's kind of a proverbial "Achille's Heel", a weak point that everyone has.

Where your ribs rise up & meet the lower portion of the breastbone (sternum) - that's the solar plexus. Your diaphragm follows the outline of the bottom of your ribcage so this point is just below the diaphragm & in between your lungs. Even a slight punch in the right spot will knock the wind out of someone. Not being able to breathe for a second is enough to catch someone off guard like the maneuver above. It buys you time - that split second where you are in charge.

A quick jab works best ... but even better if you invert your fist so that your are punching upwards when you hit. If this is done the right way this will not only immobilize someone but, if you hit hard enough, the cartilidge at the lower end of the sternum can tear the lining of the diaphragm or puncture a lung and actually kill someone.

And it is a universal weak spot because, regardless of someones size, there is no fat tissue or muscle to protect this spot. So the guy's size doesn't have to intimidate you. All you need is one clear shot.

Now, fortunately, I've never had the occasion to use any of these tricks but knowing that you have some sort of a plan in case of emergencies is reassuring.

I should tell you, though, that my buddy who showed me the shin-splint trick taught me by demonstrating ... on my shin!!! My friends got a good laugh but holy shit that hurts like a motherfucker!

(excuse my French - don't be offended, anyone, I said French, not Quebecoise) :D
