(French professor Jocelyn) Couture-Nowak was born in Montreal in 1958 and lived both in Quebec and Nova Scotia before moving to Blacksburg with her husband in 2001.

"She would approach anyone she heard speaking French to welcome them to the local francophone community."

Before moving to Virginia, Couture-Nowak helped found the Ecole Acadienne de Truro in Nova Scotia, which opened in 1997 to enable francophone families to have a safe school environment where they could have a French-language education.
