It is once again time for the MERB Readers Choice Hotel Poll, this time the 2007 version.

I started a poll in the spring of 2006 which proved to be wildly popular with the members. Some members told me that they thought the poll was extremely helpful in ferreting out useful information about the hotels we stay at in Montreal, and why we like them. A link to that thread can be found here:

https://merb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15905&highlight=readers+choice

Due to the poll choices being limited to 10 by the Board’s polling software, I went about picking the 10 hotels I personally thought best represented the interests of members using various online hotel booking services like Priceline, Hotwire, Travelocity and Expedia. Some members were upset that I omitted certain hotels, but I encouraged them to write in the hotels that they thought were omitted, and I promised to add the 3 highest write in vote getters to this year’s poll, and drop the 3 lowest vote getters in the main poll. That’s how I arrived at the 10 hotels in this year’s poll.

The Hotel de la Montagne won the 2006 main poll, while the St. Sulpice emerged victorious in the 2006 write in category. The Sheraton, Holiday Inn Express, and Sofitel were the last 3 vote getters in the 2006 main poll, and hence have been dismissed from this year’s poll.

So here are the rules:

1. Vote on your favorite hotel in the poll, and if your favorite hotel is not included among the 10 choices, simply post and say “I write in_________________ [insert favorite hotel]”. This gives last year’s losers, the Sheraton, the Holiday Inn Express and the Sofitel, a chance to redeem themselves and get back into the main poll next year. It also gives a chance to other hotels I may have overlooked.

2. Feel free to post comments about why you like certain hotels, why you dislike certain hotels, or why you voted on one hotel over another or why you wrote in a particular hotel.

3. Comments on bidding and bidding strategies should go in the “Hotel Bidding” thread.

Thank you all for your participation. Please make your voice heard in this poll - all opinions are encouraged and welcomed about the hotels you like, and why you like them!

Delta Montreal and Hyatt are my top favorites. Both have superior rooms as well as all top hotel amenities, and staff are friendly and provide good services. Best value for the money at the hotwire and PL prices.

They are both within walking distance of all major attractions I am interested in, west to Crescent, east to St. Dennis, and north to Prince Arthur and even Schwartz Deli on St. Laurent. When it rains or snows or when I don't feel like walking, hailing a cab is never a problem, and both are a short walk from a Metro station.

The only ones I can comment on are the first 5 and the last 1, out of those 6 the Vogue is by far my favorite hotel although due to the rates I haven't stayed there in about a year. Even with the elevator key restriction it's still my favorite place.

As far as value, the Hyatt to me is the best value if you can get it on PL for anywhere between $50-75/night. Ya can't beat that!

one exception with Delta Montreal

One exception with Delta Montreal- the Signature Club Rooms on the 21st to 23rd floors. As I jokingly told an SP one time that's were they lock up all the crazies. ;)

I absolutely hate the fact that elevator keycards are needed to access these floors, and you would have to meet the SP on a different open access floor or the hotel lobby or the conference center lobby. I think you can ask your "friend" to get a keycard from the front desk, but you may have to give her your name so that the front desk will call you to confirm. I have been offered the Signature Club floors many times and declined.

Even though I'm local and use Chablis/Ideal for short encounters, I frequently go for long evening or overnighters in Downtown or Old Montreal hotels.

As I've a liking for 2-place hot tubs and large showers, my vote goes to the Nelligan's corner suites, regardless of price or location. Great restaurant, good service and SP friendly. A bit pricey during the high season, but just the best hot tubs I've found. In the same area (Old Montreal), Hotel Gault is also a fine spot in my book (great beds, large rain-head shower, no hot tub in the basic suites I've tried so far but larger suites have some and I will eventually try one of these). Good prices for such a fine place during weekdays in the low season.

For a more downtown location, the Vogue King Bed suites are just great. They have hot tubs but they are a tight squeeze for 2. The elevator key access scheme is a bit of a pain, but I had no problem leaving a keycard in an enveloppe at the desk for my guests. I prefer the Vogue over the Hotel De la Montagne, the Delta, the Marriott and the Hyatt in the Downtown core.

Interesting early returns on the poll so far. Right now, a 2 horse race, but the poll will remain open until June 2 so there is a long way to go.

Daringly,

The review I posted of HDLM was a detailed, accurate and balanced review, in which I highlighted pros and cons of the hotel. The pros I highlighted are significant pros which obviously resonate with many people, since HDLM won last year's poll and, so far, is tied for the lead in this year's poll in its very early stages. However, there are still many votes to be cast.

The review I posted also highlighted the cons of HDLM which by the ways others have also mentioned.

Elizabeth,

I don't know if you read my original post but I explained the rules regarding write in votes.

Your post will be treated as a write in vote for Hotel Place d'Armes.

My favourite is the hotel de la montagne

Great location
Friendly staff
nice size rooms
large washrooms(walk in showers)
sp friendly
rooftop bar(no better place in summertime to start day)
That's my choice as well.

Update on Write In Votes

Holiday Inn Express, 1
Marriott Chateau Champlain, 1
Le Germain, 1
Hotel Gault, 1
Hotel Place D'Armes, 1

I am going to treat the first favorable mention of any hotel not in the main poll as a write in vote, if a poster does not say "I write in ____________."

For guest reviews and ratings of hotels worldwide, see www.tripadvisor.com. You can also use the site to compare rates through different booking agents.

Late breaking news on tripadvisor.com that might affect this poll. It looks like someone was having sex at the HDLM!

"Background of our complaint and why I give the Hotel De la Montage a poor rating:

We checked in, dropped our stuff in the room and literally went straight to the show at the nearby Bell Centre. We returned just after the concert ended at 11:00pm and prepared for bed. Turn down service was provided some time while we were out at the concert. Much to my dismay, upon sitting on the edge of the bed, we noticed an open & empty condom wrapper on the floor..."

This thread needed a bump because Memorial Day weekend is rapidly approaching and people have been sending me PMs asking me about hotels. To those who have sent me PMs, this poll and thread provides you with some answers.

Just a bump because the poll is a dead heat at the top, and just like in the Preakness Stakes yesterday, one of these horses has to win.;)

A Write-in vote

I vote for the Lofts at the Vieux Port. Nice, spacious rooms very well appointed, full kitchen and dining areas, with a great location. Prices compare well to the upper-end hotels, with a much more luxurious experience. The larger suites have great bathrooms, featuring 2- (or 3-!) person jacuzzis. :D
