This story will make you mad and want to cry. We just hope someone out there can give this elderly victim some justice

    REPORT:

    May 11, 2007 6:34 PM

This video may be hard to watch, but it’s even harder to believe that someone could beat a 91-year-old man, punching this World War II veteran 21 times.

(Mr. Sims) “He come up, he want a light for a cigarette. Just as I ... he threw a punch at me.”

Days after the assault, 91-year-old Mr. Sims says the swelling has gone down quite a bit but the black and blue marks are clearly visible. Now he and his family hope Detroit police can catch the man who beat him.

It was last Friday at about 8:30 in the evening outside this west side party store.

The young stranger approached Mr. Sims, asked for a light and then began to beat him over and over again – and Mr. Sims couldn’t go anywhere. He was pinned in between his car door and another car.

(Mr. Sims) “I think we kinda’ wrestled around there. He punched again and again.”

What the man wanted from 91-year-old Sims was his car, a 2005 Chevy Malibu.

(Mr. Sims) “He grabbed my keys out of my hand and hopped in the car.”

A woman who appears to have been with the carjacker tries to get in the car and while a small crowd of people just stand by. The carjacker calmly drives away, leaving Mr. Sims beaten, battered and helpless.

(Mr. Sims) “They give me some painkiller, pills and I’ve been taking them.”

Sources say these are the two people Detroit police want to question. They were caught on store surveillance video minutes before the attack.

PROSECUTOR CHARGES IN BEATING AND CARJACKING OF 91 YEAR OLD MAN

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Deonte Edward Bradley, 22 of Detroit in connection with the violent assault and carjacking of 91 year old Detroit resident Leonard Sims that occurred at 8:35 p.m. on May 4, 2007 in the parking lot of the Stop and Go Liquor Store located at 3206 W. McNichols.

Mr. Sims parked his 2005 Chevy Malibu in the parking lot of the store. Mr. Bradley asked Mr. Sims for a light for his cigarette and allegedly punched Mr. Sims multiple times in the face and neck. Mr. Bradley forced the keys from Mr. Sims hand and then hit Mr. Sims in the face and used the car door to knock Mr. Sims down on the ground. Mr. Bradley drove away in the vehicle. Mr. Sims was assisted by citizens at the scene who called police.

After an investigation by Detroit Police Department and the Violent Crimes Task Force Mr. Bradley was arrested on May 10, 2007.

He has been charged with Carjacking, which carries a penalty of up to life in prison; and, Assault With Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.

“Is there really any reason to beat a 91 year old just to take his car?” said Prosecutor Worthy. “Carjacking is bad enough but there was absolutely no reason for him to brutalize one of our senior citizens to accomplish his criminal goal.”

The arraignment will take place today at 5:00 p.m. in the 36th District located at 421 Madison Avenue in the City of Detroit.

I saw the images yesterday on CNN and found them quite troubling to say the least. However, aside from calling 911, or perhaps trying verbally to scare off the perp or to reason with him, one has to be careful not to make the situation any worse, as you don't know whether the perp is carrying a weapon. A legal expert on CNN mentioned that the way the justice system is set up, it does not want to encourage vigilante justice, which explains why innocent onlookers to a crime that basically do nothing are never charged. The expert drew a parallel with a movie, whose name I forget, starring Jodie Foster, for which she won an academy award, about a woman getting raped in a bar in front of many eye witnesses. Well, it turned out that in the movie, the onlookers were never charged for not intervening. Rather, they were charged with somehow participating in the rape (although it's a bit fuzzy in my head, that was essentially the idea behind the point of the CNN expert).
