After checking the dealers and CDN tire for prices for repairs to my car suspension, I am considering going indy on my car repairs. Are there any reliable ( and less expensive ) indy garages around Montreal that you guys might know of?

What make and model of car? How bad is the suspension?

Virtually all indy garages would be better than Canadian Tire.

The Ultramar on Gouin in Pierrefonds across from the Lafleurs.

Peter, the owner is very honest and will tell you what isup, what needs to be done now and what can wait...

I wouldn't go to Canadian Tire for anything beyond an oil change or to fix a flat tire. Even then I wouldn't be sure about going to them. The Canadian Tire that I used to go to would often find "problems" with the car when I brought my car in for an oil change.

Price versus quality

Whatever you do stay away from white or black box parts (cheap, no name brand parts). You will be back for more than a new tie rod.

Need an Indy to fix your tie-rod? Mmm... Is it just me or it would be easy to... LOL!! ;)

Car parts are like escorts, never get the cheapest but, mor money isn't always a synonym with better quality. Vasco is right.

And yes, YES!! Stay away from canadian Tire's garages! I don't know how they do it but it seems they always screwed-up something the few times I went there. Not same store either: at least 3 different places, Quebec and Ontario! It's like they take mechanics and send them to an "unlearn-what-you-know-and-don't-use-your-head" class...

You could always check with the CAA for a list of recommended garages. You might have to be a member to get info though. At work, we get our auto repairs and service done at a local Ultramar in Longueuil. They do solid work and have very reasonable prices. If Longueuil is not too much out of your way send me a PM and I'll send you back the details as I don't have the info with me at the moment. Or I could post it here if anyone needs a place on the south shore.

The problem with the CAA list is that the garages pay to be on this list so there are many good garages out there who aren't listed simply because they do not wish to pay...

Ronnie, you are absolutely correct. I was thinking of the APA, not CAA, when I wrote that post but it came out wrong.

The APA does undercover investigations of car dealers and repair shops and is a reliable source for information on both.

The APA will also stear you towards member list.

I was told by a con artist...........er, mechanic that he was offered membership in the APA for a fee, the APA promised him that her would be on a recommended garage list availble to APA memebers.
This was amazing to me because this mechanic is not the most honest nor is he the most competant mechanic I know.

This is why I pay no attention whatsoever to these lists: pay and you'll be on the list, unless you're really bad or are a known scam artist. Even then! If anybody goes to Saguenay and need a CAA towing, you'll see what I mean! The guy's not CAA, he is a "recommended" garage and the only towing for CAA.

Best is recommendations by friends. And even then... I got screwed that way too!

SO then since I now live in the east (near Lafontaine Park) and my mechanic is in the West Island, does anybody know of a good, reputable, reasonable mechanic in my end of town? My A/C is going  it works when if feels like it! Coming home today it was on and off :(
