Say you're told to stop by an undercover unmarked cop car that puts on a red light after they see you do something against the rules.

Would you stop? Whats the penalty if you dont?

I've heard alot of stories in states where theres guys that act as cops pull over people and then proceed to rob, rape and murder their victims.

I heard this topic discussed recently and the information given was: Yes, you have to stop but you can open the window just a crack and tell the undercover officer (or whoever it is) that you will not hand over your license or come out of the car until he calls for a uniformed officer to assist.

Or, you can just make a break for it... it's up to you :)

Call the "real" cops

I have been advised that you can call 911 (or the equivalent) and tell them the situation. Also, if you know of a nearby police or fire station you can pull in there. Any other place where there are lots of people can suffice.

If you choose either of the above, police friends have mentioned that you should put on your emergency flashers to let the unmarked car know that you see them.

The majority of unmarked patrol cars in Mtl have uniformed officers in them. Those that don't, such as detectives, will not pull you over for a standard traffic offense.

If you don't stop, you will probably be charged with refusal to obey a police officer or evading arrest.

In Montreal, I've never seen unmarked patrol cars. In St-Eustache, I've seen them. I think that I've also seen them in the South Shore. They basically look like regular cars except the front of their rear-view mirror (facing the front windshield) has the standard police colored lights.

Not a bad idea for anybody who is worried about this to take a good look at the types of light used when an unmarked police car has pulled somebody else over. They are pretty distinctive along with the headlights flashing alternately. Not something cheap for just anybody to have. If you get pulled over with this type of lighting you can be pretty sure it is for real. A guy pulling up beside you and flashing a dime store badge on the other hand...

Reminds me of a time last summer when my friend was driving on the 40 ouest in the left lane (fast lane) and some nutjob passed us on the left shoulder and then slowing down next to us showing us something that looked like a badge. A real cop wouldnt be that crazy.

Master, you'd be surprised! I had a MARKED CAR do that to me, and the guy just got behind me 20 seconds before! I actually saw him coming and was on the process of going from the left lane to the right side when he pulled to my left, on the shoulder, siren on, gesturing like crasy and all! They're not all 100 watts!

If you're afraid, in the middle of nowhere, and the guy isn't in uniform, not stopping might not be too bad, as long as you slow down, put your 4 ways so he see you acknowledge, and don't do anything hinting you want to evade him, then a judge should be understanding. But DO call 911/emergency! They should be able to confirm within minutes if the guy after you is genuine.

If you're a little but more brave, you stop and ask him for his badge and ID, tru a small window opening.

Nowadays, you can't tell the difference between an unmarked and a normal car. Unmarked are no longer the "el-cheapo" with black weels, no hubcaps, no chrome... Here in Gatineau, they have cool Dodge Charger with tinted windows! Unless the guy start the strobes, you don't even see them. Some even have Japanese cars!

There are unmarked SQ cars on all highways. You just don't notice them unless they have pulled someone over. As far as I know, municipal police do not use unmarked cars for traffic control, and the detectives cars are not equiped with the same lighting system as the unmarked SQ cars.

If it turns out not to be a real cop, the window being mostly closed won't help against a bullet. All SQ patrol officers wear their uniform with a bullet proof vest, marked or unmarked cars. If the guy coming towards your car is wearing a suit, chances are he isn't a cop.

I think that I've noticed them on the Champlain bridge where the SQ often have cars parked there with their radar guns. Most of the time, these are regular SQ cars but sometimes you will see a "regular" unmarked car there with an SQ officer pointing a radar gun at the passing cars.

In St-Eustache, I once had one of these cars following (or more accurately behind me for about 2 blocks) on a 2 way street (1 lane each direction). I slowed down purposely from 60 km to 45-50km and when no traffic was coming in the opposing direction, eventually he/she crossed the solid yellow line (against the opposing traffic) and passed me.

Even though I've never been stopped by one of these unmarked SQ or municipal/city police cars, besides having the special lights on the rear-view mirror, I believe that they also have a siren noise to alert drivers to either pull over or to let them pass (since people rarely constantly look at their rear view mirrors to see who/what is behind them).

I've seen the unmarked SQ cars on the champlain bridge. Usually large full size american made cars with dark colors. Most of the time they're the same model as the SQ marked cars.

I've also seen the Montreal police stealth cars which are impossible to spot from the front and back of the cars. Their only markings are on the side of the car. The cars are the new Chevrolet Impalas, white, lights located on the inside of the windshield along the top and on the rear window along the top also.

A friend of mine work at the RCMP "customization" garage in Ottawa and got me to visit once. It's unbeliveable what thy can do to make a cop car totally impossible to spot! Hidden antennas, strobes behind tinted part of windshield, computer terminals that slide-out... And today, with LED strobes, it's even easier! The day I visited, they were working on a ...Volvo! Granted these are mainly used for tailing peoples, not for traffic but still, any car can be a covert cop car these days, and if they really want to hide it to us, we won't know until it's too late!

The SQ is going the same way as OPP with cars that have some marking but can't be discovered from the front or back, so no external parts and no markings on front and back. The goal is to catch "bad" drivers by staying in front or behind, without tipping them off.

For me, I would like to "see" more unmarked police cars on the road whether it be the municipal/city police force or the SQ. It would make people think twice about pulling some of the dangerous stuff that I see on the road.

Unmarked car update: Longueuil municipal police use unmarked cars. I saw one pull over a driver for speeding today near the golf course. Longueuil is one of the worst places for speeding tickets and I have gotten so used to seeing people being pulled over that I had forgotten that they used unmarked cars.

Woman raped by police impostor

Yesterday, a local woman was pulled over by an unmarked car. The plain-clothed impostor identified himself as a police officer and, after ordering her out of the car, he raped her.

Here is the story.

A Mass State Police Lieutenant suggested "drivers shouldn’t hesitate to call 911 if they suspect someone is impersonating a trooper"

Seen 2 uniformed cops get out of a unmarked car and get lunch at a McDonalds. Do not know if they were on patrol duty or other types of police related work.
