Brought up an interesting subject in my 911 thread...figured its time to take a poll to see how we plan on defending ourselves if someone were to break in and attempt harm on us and our families.

I live would use my baseball bat to hurt the son of bitch. Beside we know the cops would rather bust johns, SWs, SPs and massge parlors rather than deal with real crime.

One of the benefits of house insurance is that you don't have to shoot someone to defend your juicer, coffee machine, wide screen tv, etc. I expect the vast majority of burglaries take place when the residents are away (in which case the gun will be stolen also), but in the unlikely event that someone breaks into my house while I'm there, I'll try to minimize the tension by offering him a beer.

I'm NOT going to shoot someone to protect a material possession. Who knows who he is or why he is doing it.

In my opinion, one of the least admirable qualities of our American cousins is their gun fetish.

Calling 911 does not preclude me from defending my family.

Just realized...there might be more than one burglar. How effective would one guy be against two or more attackers?

Myself...two loaded handguns (dont plan on reloading or finding another clip). This should give me enough 'choices' should any situation arise. If something else does arise that two loaded pistols can't handle...then the shotgun is the next best choice...pellets won't travel thru walls as far as high powered rifles rounds.

Yes, the second least attractive aspect of American culture is that they put the most people to death annually. Here's a question for you: Is the American obsession with guns any way related to having the death penalty, and using it so frequently?

Since firing squad is not a legal method of execution any more, I would say no. The Chinese, however, use guns in their chosen method of execution. The recent highly publicized execution of their Food and Drug Chief was by a pistol shot to the back of the head.

I should add that we don't execute 19 year old girls for acts amounting to negligence, as does Saudi Arabia. The overwhelming majority of those executed in the USA were convicted of extremely violent crimes, usually murders of a particularly callous and indifferent nature. Most state sentencing laws require the circumstances of the crime to be considered in sentencing the criminal, and in many of these cases there is a choice of life imprisonment or death penalty that is deliberated upon at the sentencing hearing. It's never automatic that the death penalty is imposed, and in some cases the death penalty can be stayed by appeal or clemency of the Governor.

With the number of home invasions in the Mtl area in recent years, if someone breaks into my apartment while I am there he will leave in a body bag. No questions and no hesitation. It has nothing to do with protecting my meager possesions, it has to do with protecting my life. Simply subduing the person only guarantees a return visit after he has been released with a slap on the wrist. I might feel different if our justice system had some teeth to it, but it doesn't. And obviously I would call 911 after so they could remove the garbage for me.

What do you expect? It's Saudi Arabia. It's not like we are talking about a civalized nation here. It's a country filled by morons and runned by morons. I know we are not suppose to judge other cultures, but this only further proves our cultural superiority.

By the way, nice post Techman.

For me the choice is easy. Firearm.

Specifically Remington 870P Max with 7 rounds of Hornady TAP 00 Buck.

Ultra-relaible, easy to operate, and it owns anything at normal house sized distances.

But, this topic always gets me heated up so I don't think I can particiapte anymore after this.
Guns are not dangerous when handled responsibly by law abiding citizens. Just because you personally are afraid of them, doesn't mean you have any place trying to ban others from own them lawfully.
Everyone has a right to defend themselves, their possesions, and their family.

I just don't understand how people can actually believe that more laws and regulations related to legal ownership, would deter a criminal or lunatic from doing something in the first place. People were killing each other long before guns existed, banning them won't make that stop or make guns disappear either.

Little Canadian serial killer to open your eyes.

Ohh, wouldn't the death penalty come in handy now

And what about the wife?

What prison is she in? None...living free as a bird in Montreal.

Death penalty so barbaric? Stand face to face to the familys of the daughters who were tortured, raped repeatedly, murdered and then cut into pieces...you tell the family's face to face how barbaric the US is in putting to death their violent criminals.

If anyone tries to break into your home, please put that Remington to use!;)

the only non-violent answer is sorted worded to make it sound like a ridiculous option....maybe it's just me.

Isnt that the only non-violent action there is?? Should I have put "Run Away" in the poll? "Hide in the closet"? The poll, if you failed to read it properly...was how do you plan on defending yourself in your own home.

No...dial 911 was the only alternative I could think of to defend myself in my own home without actually shooting or hitting someone intent on harming me.
Couldnt put down "set the dog on the intruder" cause we all know PETA wouldn't like you putting your pet at risk. Dogs have rights too you know...don't put them in the line of fire to save your ass.

The option to choose between US and Canadian was only to show who would do what to defend themselves. 911 is an obvious choice for both countries.

Gun = 911

Once they cross the threshold of my home, they are done. The key to shooting an intruder is to kill them. Otherwise they can sue you.

NyClimber and breadman:
Both of you express my sentamnets exactly. We need to keep in mind the following:

1- He/she is breaking into my home. (Against the law).
2- I do not have time to hesatate or wait and see if he/she will hurt me or sing me a Barny song (the lives of those in the house are at risk).
3- If he/she is part of a gang than he/she might return for reveng alone or with back up (potential long term threat that can be deminished through his/her death).
4- Being a drug addict, poor, a misunderstood person, a minorty, a majority ticked at minorities or what ever nonesense you want to add is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. (People know better from right and wrong).

Should add "in your house" to this statement. If they expire outside, make sure you pull the body into your house before the police arrive.

On a side note...I remember seeing a cops show a year or so back...two young girls alone in the house...two guys started breaking in. They did all that they could...grabbed the phone and hid in the closet and dialed 911. Luckily for them before they dialed 911 they called their neighbor, who came over and blasted one with a shotgun, killing him instantly...and wounding the other before he could escape. Cops found the dead guy, the wounded guy down the street...and the shotgun outside. Neighbor finally came back to the scene and told the cops it was him.

I still have my good ol' baseball bat handy.I use to hit .300 while playing minor baseball.I would go for home run if I catch the bastard, then call the cops,or morgue.
I have no time to discuss with those scumbags whose aim is to steal or maybe harm me.
Call 911?
Yeah and leave him all the time in the worls to steal and run away, then repeat the same offence over and over.

Damn, that's a lovely weapon. I'm thinking of renewing my gun hobby and was thinking of getting a shotgun. Is this one legal in Canada? Something tells me that shotguns/rifles with handgrips are not legal. The barrel length seems close to legal, by the old standards I barely remember. By legal, I mean a long gun, not a restricted firearm like a handgun.

Couple of comments...

Soxatsix...00 buck is great, but loading it with a round of birdshot as the first round is the way to go. You wont kill the intruder, just give them a bunch of bird shot to deal with. If its not a burglary but someone you know its a quick ride to the hospital to remove the pellets...if its not someone you know you have lots of 00 buckshot at the ready.

ZA...im going to guess you live in Canada. I've had frequent discussions with my buddy in Toronto and he's brought up the 'intruders rights' many times in our talks about self defense. How you can't hurt or kill them...and if you do you'd better be ready to explain yourself to the cops...and might even do jail time yourself.

Ding...rolling pin, knife, mace, brass nuckles...those are all something non violent like a baseball bat, golf club etc (i prefer a 3 iron, could never hit the woods:cool: )...and they basically were meant to fall under the "etc" in the poll. I just wanted to know what percentage of US/Canadians depend on which type of defense. Seems that most members from the US are depending on good old smith and wesson.
