What really gets under my skin is when I start seeing "Back to School" sales starting way earlier than it should be. A person is relaxing, and enjoying the calmness of summer when the inevitable bombardment of messages about hurrying in to buy backpacks starts earlier and earlier every year. I'm going to start telling store managers how much this bugs me.

What's the earliest you've seen this promotion and am I the only one that finds it irritating?

Shouldn't the SP's and MP's be offering some of these specials, I mean come on! when school starts and 20-30% of the girls stop until the end of teh semester, they need to build up a small nest egg to carry them through.

TurboDick, the stores just carry out the orders of the heads in the corporate offices, so don't expect much more than a shrug of indifference. As for it being too early, like every other excuse for a sale, yeah, it gets on my nerves too. Trust me, by December 10th, I'm ready to shoot my radio, the tv, and every speaker anywhere that's playing christmas carols.
Unfortunatley though, it's all a sign of the times. Too few haves, and WAY too many have nots. I don't know how old you are, but when I went to school we didn't have computers, weren't allowed calculators, and it didn't cost more than 50 cents for a big spiral notebook. All the stuff kids require for school is expensive. You should see, or maybe you have, the lists of "Required Material" that even an elementary school can put out. A friend of mine got one from his 4th grader last year that came to $1500. That's pretty good coin, and didn't include the "Suggested" computer programs that, thankfully, he already had.
There is a bright spot though! All the MILFs that are in the stores!

I know it's not going to change, but I still don't like it. At least with the Christmas sales that start in October or the Valentines stuff that goes up after Boxing day it is building up to something occuring versus something ending. That would be summer. Back to school...summer's over. I'm pretty sure I saw a display up at the end of June in Staples. Pllleeeassse.

MTWALLET, I've heard similar stories of big spending for back to school. Hard to believe, but I know uniforms, computer accessories, stylish binders, backpacks aren't cheap.

Elementary schools in Quebec start in August. I think high schools also.

Well Ronnie, if you're stuck doing school work (survey-another thread) I guess the little rug runners can go back too. Seriously, what do you spend on back to school? I used to be good with a half-dozen "duo tangs" a couple of binders, and 500 sheets of lined paper. It didn't quite add up to $1500 until beer came into the equation.:)

Does this include text books?

I tend to buy school supplies all year round: paper for my printer, pencils, pens, notebooks...

Though I am currently in the market for a laptop

I forgot about the textbooks. Now those get expensive. I think most people who have bought them carry them around from place to place for the next twenty years because they can't bear to toss them, since that textbook you've paid $120 for is usually worthless after a couple of years when a new edition comes out.
