HI all
i was on Tashereau this evening and i saw the banner of Hooters
i found this on the net:

It's bang or bust for Quebec's first Hooters restaurant
Will seat 210. Greenfield Park eatery opens next month
MIKE KING, The Gazette
Published: Wednesday, August 22

Sam Meghani wanted to introduce the Hooters experience to Dubai a few years ago, but instead he's opening the restaurant chain's first Quebec outlet in Greenfield Park next month.
Unable to secure the Hooters of America Inc. franchising rights for the United Arab
Emirates in 2003, Meghani bided his time until last year, when he was contacted by the Atlanta-based company and told the Quebec market was available after another entrepreneur it had been negotiating with suffered a heart attack.

Pakistani-born Meghani, who started a career in the restaurant business when he arrived in the U.S. nearly 30 years ago, now has the exclusive rights in this province and a commitment to open four Hooters restaurants in the next five years.
Hooters of the South Shore, the first franchise here and 13th in Canada, is scheduled to open Sept. 17 at 3320 Taschereau Blvd.
"This will be the only one we'll open on the South Shore," Meghani said from the site yesterday. "The next two will be on the West Island and Laval - we're not sure which one will be first - then a fourth downtown (Montreal)."
His broker, Ron Fournier of Les Immeubles Fournier Realty, said the pair are "targeting strategic locations on the West Island, Laval and east-end Montreal."
They are also looking at Quebec City and Sherbrooke, Meghani added.
Meghani concedes the restaurant with the risqué name known for usually well-endowed and scantily clad waitresses - the official Hooters Girl uniform consists of bright orange shorts and white tank top, short-sleeve or long-sleeve T-shirt (pantyhose and bras are required, however) - wouldn't go over well in the predominantly Muslim United Arab Emirates with its booze ban and strict dress code.
But he sees the Quebec market as ideal for his three main goals to offer the right food at the right price, sports (17 42-inch flat-screen TVs in the dining room and even two TVs in the men's room) "and beautiful girls."
The flagship Quebec outlet will seat 210 and employ 70 to 80 local people.

Awesome.

I don't really like clubs, so I don't usually go to places like Buonanotte, where there are hot waitresses, but expensive prices. Even so, the hot waitresses usually wear pants, albeit tight low riders.

I've seen some hot waitresses at the Novotel restaurant and Queue du Cheval wearing some "sensible" skirts.

Hooters would be ideal due to the low price and the eye candy. No shortage of that in Quebec. :D

Hopefully, there will be one in downtown Montreal.

If only I knew...
FALSE! The Hooter on Tashereau isn't the first! There was one in Gatineau about 10 years ago, and it failed miserably.

There was 2 in Ottawa and they suffered the same faith.

Problem with Hooters is, the only thing they offer is the girls. The food is expensive for what you get, the menu is minimalistic and almost everything is far from health-conscious.

So, since in Québec and Ontario, if we want to see beautiful ladies naked, we go to strip club, and pay far less than our US counterpart to do so, Hooters are, IMHO, doomed here. In USA, there are places where Hooters will be as close as a guy will ever get to a sexy lady bdressed sexy without paying an arm and a leg. That's not the case here.

I can't see Hooter's surviving in Montreal for very long. It's fine in the sexually repressed US where nudity is considered a bad thing and those who are afraid to go into a sc would go to Hooter's instead...but here in Quebec where we have sexy waitress restaurants, Pere Gedeon and strip clubs that serve passable food, I doubt they will survive. And the girls have to wear pantyhose??? Wow! How sexy! Not.

PS: I did stop by at Twins on Crescent last weekend to meet a fellow member for a couple of beer. I found it to be a nice enough place. The beer was reasonably priced and the wings were as good or better than I've had in most places. We didn't try anything else though. The waitresses were friendly, one was very cute, and no pantyhose!:p It's a small place though and one of our GTs would fill the place up. Hmmm...there's an idea! :D

PSS: There saw also a Hooter's for a short time on the ground floor of the building that used to have Alfie's upstairs. It didn't last long and I have no idea if it was related to the original chain or if they just ripped off the name.

The Pere Gedeon chain has been around longer than Hooters - by about 8 years.Un fortunately they have never advanced beyond the local level.

This was an actual news story? More like a spoon-fed promotional piece.

At least they have their marketing/PR working well - and isn't that going to go a long way in a business that sells the "sizzle and not the steak"?

Guaranteed failure. I already feel sorry for the investors who are about to lose their money. Doubt the "owner" is puting his money into this. Sad.

I'm not sure that it will be a failure since it is so popular elsewhere in North America. I've never been to a Hooters before so I'm not sure of the prices but if their prices are fair for the quality of food, I don't think that it will be a failure. There is a place on Cote-de-Liesse that I think is called "Pere Gideon" or something like that where the waitresses are all in bikinis and pantyhouse which seems to be a success because of the prices (average prices for the type of food you're getting) and the eye-candy. Everytime I go there for lunch, it is completely packed.

If Hooters serves food like Planet Hollywood and charge outrageous prices like Planet Hollywood did (for things like hamburgers, fries, etc.), then they probably won't be successful.

I've been to lots of Hooters. It's true that in many US cities, where there are no SPs and few strip joints, Hooters is your only option to at least see something.

The food is not the greatest. I have no problem with it, but I've heard quite a few complaints from others. It's not as good as other similar chain restaurants as, say, Friday's.

The prices aren't bad and comparable to say, Applebee's. It can add up if you get all the side dishes, though.

What usually happens with most Hooters is they establish a steady database of regulars. These are guys who, for all we know, are losers in real life, but in Hooters they get treated like a king. This probably accounts for most of their revenue. There is also a negative effect to this. Since the girls spend most of their time pretending to flirt with the regulars, they end up ignoring new people. Many a new customer has been put off by this.

Will Hooters succeed in Montreal? Difficult to say.

Hooters has worked well in Toronto and Vancouver, so certainly, Canada has no problem with it. It might work well in Montreal, if it is located next to other large American chains, and not seen as out-of-place. After all, Taco Bell arrived with much fanfare.

OTOH, having not seen too many (if any) big American sit-down restaurant chains in Montreal, it would seem that Montreallers definitely prefer a more local flavor, and may turn a cold shoulder.

I think one would do well in the downtown area. It would be a familiar face for our american visitors (as opposed to say, Les Trois Brasseurs), and their wings are absolutely awesome. Whenever I'm in Toronto, I stop at Hooters specifically for the wings. I was there over the weekend with a large group, and most of us all had Hooters on our agenda specifically for the wings.

I totally agree with you. As a matter of fact, it would be a success! I also am not fond of Les 3 Brasseurs. Not crazy about their beer, neither about their food. I also stop in Toronto to check out Hooters whenever i'm near the area (close to the Rogers Center). Good place to watch the NFL on Sundays & Monday nights. I also love the Hooters located in Ottawa in the By Market, next to the Marriott Courtyard. Last time i was there was 2 years ago....is it still there? Girls were smokin'!!! One thing about the one in Toronto, though. The last time i was in there, some guy had his 10 year old kid in there with him. I don't really know why some guy would want his 10 year old kid in that place!

That's not a big of a deal, really. Even at Hooters in the US, people bring their kids in. I've seen little league parties, kids' birthday parties, etc. in there. They have high chairs too. It's not like the girls are nude or topless or anything.

Hooters used to be great when only girls with big tits could work there. But then some greedyass lawyers sewed them for discrimination and not hiring girls with small tits. Now they are just like any other resto bar in the states. I've seen better looking girls at Friendlys.

If they pick a good location...they'll survive. If theres any other bar in the area...they'll die.
